SEA is becoming less and less hospitable. I lived many years in SEA in the 90's and earlly 2,000's. I now live in Brazil and feel much more comfortable as a Westerner in South America than in SEA. Many western men, including friends of mine in SEA had bad stories there especially if they divorce their local wives. In Brazil (where I reside) and the rest of South America I have the same right as locals when it comes to land ownership for example. The law is also applied the same way here. As a foreigner in SEA, you're ALWAYS a target in case of litigation!

What you say is definitely true. Ultimately, however, it all comes down to personal preference. And these sometimes seemingly ridiculous increased requirements for long-term visas worldwide - as already mentioned by Dan several times before - have been very coordinated over the last two years. For example, in your current country of residence, Brazil, there has been a requirement of USD 1,000 per month for a long-term visa before 2021. Without further ado, this was doubled to 2000 USD in the aftermath of the pandemic. Unfortunately Mexico`s requirements are even more blatant, as are many other countries.

Would you say Brazil is better to live in than Colombia or Argentina, if so why? Thanks im advance for any feedback
@orto-ig9io
@orto-ig9io 10 ай бұрын
That depends on your age and your personal status. The requirements for the pensioner long-term visa is in Brazil more than twice as high as in Argentina or Colombia. I would also take a closer look at the three countries in terms of health care, general security, political and economic stability. In general, countries like Brazil and Argentina, with their gigantic geographical dimensions, are extremely heterogeneous and offer completely different living conditions in the north and south.@@Mongoose-ct6us

@@orto-ig9io I'm married with a Brazilian woman, so I don't need to comply with anything you mentioned above. Having said that, I know ALL Latin American are beconing more demanding when it comes to requirements to live on the continent, but for a goof reasons: MORE AND MORE FOREIGNERS WANT TO LIVE HERE. According to me, a big war could soon happen in Asia. In this case, South America will then become instantly an ELDORADO a second time.

I know the whole continent perfectly so can easily say that Brazil is the country where daily life is the easiest when it comes to infrastructure and daily services. Having said that I live in São Paulo, the most international city of the continent, so we have access to many things that aren't available anywhere else around. Colombia is a great country, I could live there easily, but economic activity is very small compared to Brazil. It's a great place to retire though. I'm a massive fan of Medellin!. Argentuna is a complicated place to live and I personally don't like the behaviour of Argentinans in general (very arrogant), I don't recommend it except again if you don't need to work.

It is too bad Malaysia doesn't want longer term visitors, but like you said. It is their country. What I fear is this is not an official policy, but some immigration supervisor who made an unofficial rule. This was happening in Mexico. A regional director decided on his own to start cracking down on border run people. It created a lot of uncertainty in Mexico until the president of Mexico issued a memo and now it is back to the standard 180 days.

Yes, national level policy is the easiest way to not lose tourism. Word spreads fast now on the Internet and one bad decision can greatly affect how a country is perceived. Of course, immigration officers will always have discretion about people trying to enter their country and will talk to their superiors before making decisions, but that will never change.

Thanks Dan, much appreciated! I've been looking for about a year for information as to how frequently one could enter Malaysia and this supports what I might expect. Decades ago I had used to do frequent long stays in Malaysia and immigration said that one border run was ok but after that one needed to be out of the country more than 30 days, but if I were on business trip, as I often was for an oil company, they usually gave 30 days, but now with two 90 day entries in 6 months seeing to be the policy, this would seem like it might cause problems for people who travel throughout S.E. Asia for business as well as pleasure. The Days where we could roam the world on a whim may be coming to a close. A life-long friend I used to travel the world with and who for many decades was a top-tier leading Nation State Intelligence official about 6-months before the pandemic warned me that something major would happen in 2020 and the world was going to change dramatically. After the pandemic started this person said that eventually residing out of the U.S. as a tourist or ex-pat would be curtailed, and "Your U.S. Passport will not allow you to reside outside the U.S., and places like Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, but possibly some countries in Africa, or non-EU countries like Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, Turkey or Ukraine could be one of the few options. I asked why that might be, but got veiled hints about the US Dollar and something like what is being called A Great Reset, and the need to cut greenhouse gases to zero ASAP and that global tourism that drives air-travel has to come to an end. Not me talking, but what someone who's hints about the future have been mostly spot-on for 30 years.

That's my attitutude towards the UK. I went to Europe from the Philippines - Schengen Region - with my family just prior to the Covid "interruption". No problem with visas, which the family gained through the Dutch embassy. The UK embassy in Manila, however, wouldn't even let us through the gates when we went to seek UK visas. So, I spent my cash in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, while some friends from the UK took the trouble to come to Europe to meet us.

Thank you for another great video with valuable information! The link you provided for the digital card to enter Malaysia seems to have been changed or is broken, I get one of those "404" errors when I try to connect. No worries, I am sure I can find it on the Malaysian Immigration page. You are absolutley correct when you state that some times the rules can be interpreted differently by different immigration officials. Coming from a regulatory type carreer, I want to stress it is very important to have all the neccesary documents at your finger tips when you are standing infront of an official who has to look at these kinds of documents all day, every day. I always try to put myself in their shoes and try to imagine what it is like watching someone fumble through their belongings (or phone) trying to get the right document(s). Generally they all ask for the same thing. Its like submitting plans for a building permit! IT SHOWS RESPECT THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO COLLECT THE INFORMATION THEY ARE LOOKING FOR.

Very interesting. I was stuck in Malaysia at the beginning of the Pandemic (I am Canadian) and after my 90 day exemption expired, because the borders were still closed, they allowed me to stay another 3 months, so six in total. I left in September 2020. I returned again in 2022 and no issue, got a 90 day exemption of which I only used around 20 days before leaving. A couple months later I had a two day layover in KL and no problem, got the 90 day exemption. In all of these cases no one ever asked me any questions. One thing I have noticed in travelling to 106 countries and going through many passports. When you get a new passport it seems to reset you in many systems. I know this because I entered South Korea once on a new passport and they asked me if I had been to South Korea before which I answered yes, and then they said, oh, it must have been on a different passport because it isn't in the system, to which I replied yes. Same thing happened in Japan where I had lived for 6 years in the 90's. I entered and they asked me if it was my first time so obviously that old info was wiped. Just an interesting tidbit for what it's worth. Obviously with a new passport they won't be able to see your old stamps, which can prove useful in certain countries (ie Azerbaijan and Armenia is a recent one that comes to mind, US and Cuba, Israel and ME although Israel doesn't stamp your passport anymore). Just anecdotal but I also find that I get more questions when my passport is almost full of stamps but none when it is nearly new. One last warning - beware of the Maldives. I had an unpleasant incident entering that country. I was staying at an airbnb but you must know the name of the place and give it to the Customs Official when you enter. Even though I showed them my reservation and it's address and phone number they said it had to be an apartment with a name. I couldn't believe it and I ended up having to book a hotel (much more expensive) on the spot and then plead with my airbnb to cancel which they did. Turns out it did have a name but I didn't see it listed and they told me the Customs agent should have looked it up but they were just being lazy and obstinate. It's the only time (other than Bahrain just after the 2011 Arab Spring uprising) I have ever had a problem entering a country and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I won't go back and I will always tell others how rude they were.

Malaysia has a big problem with abandoned Ghost buildings. Forest City in Johore Bahru is a $100 Billion abandoned complex with Thousands of empty apartments & city infrastructure. Only 1% are occupied. They can’t find anyone to buy or rent these places & that’s getting common in some SE Asian nations now. Sooner or later they’ll need to find tenants with $cash to do that & it Will NOT come from the local demographic with average income of $1500 a month. They build these places thinking the high rollers from China will come………WRONG…..and the MM2H wasn’t a success either. I wonder if they realise that it’s easy to simply become a “drifter” and simply rotate within a region ( Asia , Latin America, Eastern Europe) on 90 day visas or exemptions. Your still spending money 365 days a year somewhere on this planet .

Seems countries want long-staying visitors to get the appropriate visa. Leaving for a month and then returning to the same country one just left may look like a person trying to do a series of visa runs. My secret is to just take what they give. Visa runs are legal in some countries but not others. You just need to learn what the country wants and follow the rules.

Malaysia is under pressure to comply with international tax treaties, which limits the possibility of people hopping around countries without establishing a tax residency anywhere. For Malaysia, if you stay 180 days in a year, you are a tax resident. If you stay 90 days and want to return, they will be suspicious that you are avoiding taxes somewhere, and they are under international pressure to comply. If you want to stay in Malaysia, get a visa that will allow you to do so, and be willing to pay taxes on foreign sourced income (conditions apply).
@dancooper5741
@dancooper5741 10 ай бұрын
Double Tax treaties usually take care of that issue. My income is now Tax free from a Superannuation Retirement fund anyway & most countries don’t Tax Retirement incomes . The remote workers (digital nomads) are in a different situation & most of them would pay Tax in their countries of origin. Thailand are proposing a Tax on expats , but as yet Nothing has been legislated & put in place. It’s easy to simply NOT stay anywhere more than 180 days. Snow birds have been doing that for decades.

Yes, understand. I am looking at it from Malaysia’s point of view. If they suspect someone is trying to avoid taxes by hopping around, they will be stricter about allowing certain people to enter. They only tax foreign sourced income if it is not taxed at the country of origin.

Sounds like they changed it fairly recently. Prior to about 4 months ago, I went there every 60 days as a visa run from Thailand and would stay in Malaysia 4 days then return back to Thailand. Didn't have any problems entering Malaysia. I know Thailand seems to not want westerners to long stay anymore..they are only allowing Chinese, Russians, and Indians to stay 90 days on arrival. Western countries 30 days only. Maybe its political..who knows unfortunately.

This sounds like how Ukraine use to be a few years ago. They would give a 90 day visa but one could only stay in Ukraine for 90 days out of 180 days. Once those 90 days are up and one leaves Ukraine, they can't come back into Ukraine until they are out of the country for 90 days.

You have given incorrect information re. the Malaysian retirement visa - you do not need to have an overseas income (pension) of 10,000 USD per month, it is 10,000 Malaysian Ringgit per month, which is a little over 2000 USD. However, what really makes the programme unattractive is that a deposit of MYR 150K (32K USD) is required if you are over 50 yrs old, double that if under 50. Unlike in Philippines, local tax on overseas earnings is payable.

It was nice in Thailand pre 2005, where you could do unlimited border bounces, and live for years like that. Now that I qualify for the annual retirement visa for $50, makes travel easier with a base to return to. I was looking into the Sarawak visa, and it is great for a 5-year validity, but could take a year to get approval.

Looking at air tickets for my wife's and next trip. Super expensive on Google flights and United. Is anyone else seeing this price jump? The prices I am seeing are 3000 to 13,000 dollars. We always fly on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3 to 6 months out. US to Thailand

We use Skyscanner and we use the "whole month option." Then we buy the lowest from the airline itself. I have never paid more than $1800 for a round trip. One way is usually around $800 to $1300. But I haven't searched recently. Also, I usually fly the Chinese airlines. They are the cheapest but have layovers in China.

90 days with Schengen probably isn’t a problem with most people as they only want to go in the warmer months. One or two months is generally fine with me as I tend to get antsy to move on. I am in the process of getting a one month extension in Cambodia as I do not want to travel to another country the last week of the year.

Same with us. We rarely want to stay in one country more than a few months on each visit. If you circulate through 6 or so countries per year, it solves so many problems.

Dan, I want to say thank you for making such well done and informative videos, I’ve been watching you for some time now, and very interested in doing what you do across the world and Southeast Asia, but making videos of a different content. What I’m thinking is a kind and courteous gesture for people to watch not only for those of other places, but for people living in these countries as well. I’m not wanting to spill the beans online here, but if you’d like to know, and let me know if it sounds like a good idea, I’d be happy to share and love to see you guys do some of the same. Just say hello. About myself, I’m 48 now, and I’ve been traveling the US by van full time the past 11 years. Absolutely love what I do, and do it in a very cost effective and efficient style. I’ve been gathering video making equipment for the past year now, seeing that I’ve had countless people tell me to start a channel. Just building the gull to do so. So if you have any tips in getting started and would like to hear my ideas, I’d love to hear from you sometime. Thank you again, and I really hope to meet you guys someday down the road 🙏🏻

Very good information. Because I once thought about staying in Penang and to fly to Phuket from time to time.. (Not that I would want to, Langkawi would be more than enough for a short getaway..) Now I know, I should probably stay there for 90 days and then go back. Sounds like this would mean half of the year in Thailand, half of the year in Malaysia. Not really a perfect solution, but if there wouldnt be the Philippines with their 3 year visa, I might probably do that. By the way: Seeing video material from Sabah Malaysia, I wanted to ask you, if you proably have thought of visiting Zamboanga and take the ferry from there to Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia? It is something I thought of doing after my 3 year tourist visa limit is reached, a few days in Sandakan, and then back again. I think this can be a cheap option for the 3 year visa run. Taking the Ceres Bus from for exxample Dumaguete to Zamboanga and then the Ferry to Sandakan sounded like the cheapest option to get outside the Philippines that I found so far (except some discount offers from Manila to Hongkong maybe..)

Ferries to Malaysia sounds like a nice option. So far we just fly. The flights have been cheap so far. :-) Remembers, things change so do a little reading every time to make sure you have ethe updated behavior of immigration officials. :-)

@@VagabondAwake Well, thats THE big plus of the Philippines for me anyway. Visa Extension up to three years - in this time range, you go some other country or the home country anyways at one point. You wont even notice you have no permanent residency :D Flights to KL are cheap very often as it is a hub for asia, but for Sabah it is cheaper for sure.

I got a bit of a 3rd degree at immigration as well. The officer suggested I get a different type of visa, such as MM2H. I'm hoping the soon to be released new rules for MM2H are more in line with the old rules. I spend good money in Malaysia, have extended local family there and speak the language. I love the country and people, and am looking to establish a business presence there for my company. I need to talk to an immigration attorney to see what my full range of options are.

Many SEA countries challenge long stay and retiaries lately. I believe its a clean out, and data harvesting exercise while they do it. It gives them all the numbers and behavioral patterns to squise out the most lucrative set up for taxation. This was also a by product in 2020. The tax offices then can can share accross borders all data and decide how much you should pay,....again. If the age demographic is large its worth it.

Interesting. We shall see. I think Thailand is about to get a lesson if they follow through on the 35% taxation they have planned for expats starting on Jan 1 2024.

@@VagabondAwake It is likely to give the Thais an idea, but they are not dreamers like western Governments yet. The implementation is likely to be Thai style, therefor a serious burden which needs expensive administration. Collecting taxes from all odds and sots is manual work for a minority group. The idea to me comes from the west and was being sold to SEA. The retirees which are not spending in their home country are a problem in the west. The Thais will work out what is best for them and realize it is better to be attractive for the legit retiries.

@@Hangover-ry9bo I suggest that the Thai's will do whatever China says is best for the Thai's. China has owned Thailand for a number of years. And China has been pressuring their "satellite nations" informally, to minimize North America visitors that stay more than a few weeks. This is part of their long term plan to undermine North America from within. To learn about China's plans for North America, search for "Speech Of Chinese General Chi Haotian". It an eye opener.
