Expat life has its moments. Several days ago I experienced a Thai Ambulance and a evening in a Thai hospital due to food poisoning. While at it they found something else wrong with me due to blood tests and I visited the same hospital 3 days in row for treatment and I am now a much weller person. That would never happen back in the UK (aka Canada to you); I would need to be almost on my deathbed before I got treated and then they would kick me out as soon as they had done the minimum to take care of me. In SE Asia they do take care of you and service is amazing. Anyhow just saying you never know what will happen to you and most of my experiences here in SE Asia are good or amazing.

I spend most of the year in Bangkok, along with a Toronto friend. We returned to Toronto last fall to the shock of daily pub meal expenses. We spent CA$35 to CA$60 a night each. When you put this in Thai baht, that's an outrageous 900 to 1600 Thai baht. Meal was $20, pints $9 each, a whiskey or two, only $6 each. In rather expensive Bangkok, I'd spend about 500-600 baht ($20-23) for the same volume. Skytrain home about 32 baht/$1.25. Anyway, as you say, it's all about self-education and living a bit on the edge. Not to mention, several years ago Ontario banned smoking in completely open patios and terraces. Not a problem in wide open, outdoor bars Southeast Asia. Great video report, Ryan. Sent you a donation.

Any countries in which the temperature goes over 22C; I always ended up staying indoors in an air conditioned environment. I can understand for the people that can tolerate heat the world is pretty much your oyster but for people such as I, it is a pain as I cannot enjoy taking in the "experience" without feeling ill as I have lower blood (hypotension) pressure therefore more susceptible to lowering it even more in hot climate. Been in Ontario before and I have to agree they have some of the weirdest rules and regulations I've ever seen in Canada and as for Toronto stayed there for 6 months and I was so happy to get out of there. Oh yeah, compared to half of Europe, Canada's healthcare system is nothing special. How's cost of living in Germany though?
@autoskp2 жыл бұрын
@@itchyfeetonthecheap Germany pros: low rents and real estate prices in the eastern part, multicultural Berlin, advanced and modern infrastructure, reasonable costs of car insurance, free Autobahn for cars and small trucks, worker's rights (boss cannot just tell you "you're fired"), you're getting paid on sick leave, health insurance pays pills, dentists and sometimes glasses (symbolic fees). Germany cons: gramaticaly complex language with regional differencies, complex tax system with greedy accountants, bureaucrats, densly populated country where it's hard to find a place with no people like in Canada, highly structured society - when you start with one trade, most likely you won't have a chance to leave the industry. And don't expect that Germans speak English. There is also an interesting media censorship difference: nudity and sex are no problem but violence is - complete opposite to North America. For me a good place to live. I'm staying. There is a Canadian Pizza in Berlin, where you can order "Rob Ford" haha Edit: more positives: German food - high quality. Mild European weather - imperceptible humidity.

in Perth people seem to cycle around without helmets often. I don't ride a bike so had to ask someone the other day if it wasn't illegal anymore but I think it is it just isn't really policed obviously. I would be playing Russian roulette with a car though so to me helmet seems a safe/logical option (well since I cant ride a bike, in my case not ride at all lol). I drink in park/beach on the regular too and have never been stopped or questioned so I don't think police are too fussed with minor offences like that, seems in Canada they are total sticklers.

When I caught him there I told him what a “egotistical gutless coward” he is in front of many people. The stupid bicycle helmet rule is the worst. They could make it compulsory for kids, then when you make it to adulthood, you should be able to decide for yourself if you want to wear one or not.

@@ForRiel yep helmets don’t protect your spine and vital organs. Europe doesn’t have this ahole law because they want people on bike so make separate lanes for them to protect the whole flipping body not just a bandage solution. the reality is it’s safer to work on a mining site than ride a bike on the road in this country helmet aren’t the solution, bike barrier separate lanes are.

Well , speaking from a semi/ex-pat point of view (living in Colombia currently last 6 months) I definitely hear what you're saying. Now I'm not here to hate on Toronto but come on, who would want to go back to Toronto? ;( But I digress. In general I do agree with you and here's why. Now I don't want to use your platform for a personal rant against the Canadian government, specifically immigration Canada... but what the hell, since you were giving your $.02 on the subject I thought I might as well chime in. My longtime Colombian girlfriend/ significant other/ pareja" call her whatever you want, recently applied just for a visitors visa to visit me in Canada. I want to stress the point this was just a visitors visa. However, with all the documentation she had to provide, one would think she was applying to be Justin Trudeau's personal chauffeur!! It was absolutely unbelievable and ridiculous all at the same time what immigration Canada required. Now I want to point out she has her own house here in Medellin also has 20 year academic career at the University of Antioquia and still currently holds that position. As well she has never ever had any kind of trouble law enforcement. Now it literally took us weeks to prepare all this documentation and apply for the Canadian visitors visa, among the many documents we had to upload, a return ticket showing the dates with Air Canada was also required, which we provided. But within days of applying, we received a letter from Bogata /immigration Canada , stating she had been refused her visitors visa based on the fact there is high unemployment in Colombia, and immigration Canada was not convinced she would leave Canada on the date that she had stated she would. It was immediately apparent upon reading the three reasons immigration Canada gave for rejecting her application, the employee that reviewed her file definitely didn't read any of the documentation or the many forms we were required to submit. Now if she was from Argentina or Chile none of these forms, this whole visitor visa Application headache pain in the ass process would not have been required. Bottom line, immigration Canada aka the Canadian government has been watching WAY WAY too much of the Narco series on Netflix. They are stuck in the late 80s thinking everybody from Colombia is still partying with Pablo Escobar every weekend. The Canadian government is completely discriminatory when it comes to Colombians , good citizens of Colombia that just want to visit Canada. Now I fully understand that background checks and a certain level of screening is necessary. However what the Canadian government requires Colombian citizens to provide , that just want to apply as a visitor to Canada , is nothing short of a racist!! The End... ps, this has really made me feel as well ( even after serving 28 years in the Canadian military) that I never want to return to the country that I put my life on the line for. Sincerely Embittered Tom Vancouver Island/ Medellin

Makes sense, sounds a little bleak - theres alot of similarities in Australia to Canada in that it can be safe and a bit less interesting (and beer and brunch can be pricey sometimes), but having lived abroad only in UK its on par - the things that are pricey there are cheaper here, and vice versa. So weird Canada only does 2wks off a year!! at least Australia has 4wks fr a full-time job, and im almost always worked part time and still able to live off it ok and rent a cheap studio. The main thing that keeps me in Aus is the weather, its beautiful here and to be honest 15years living in first London and then over to the colder climate of Melbourne - once I moved back West I found I was more active and healthy and that hit of vitamin D was great. I cant imagine snow and cold for 9 months of the year. Sure its beautiful but I love walks in the forest, hills and coastline and dips in the ocean too much. Being on the West coast of Australia too were fairly close to Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines etc (think they're closer and similar price to the the other side of Australia and around $500/600AUD return to Bali or Cambodia, not too bad when low wage hospitality jobs pay $20/25AUD an hour) so thats a bonus and there is so much First Nation/aboriginal culture and history to learn about in Australia too. Nearing my 40s and have considered doing a teach abroad year somewhere, you're making me want to more now, but also Im solo and it is a whole different ballgame doing it alone.
@itchyfeetonthecheap2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input. Solo is definitely more challenging. I'm not sure where I'd be in life if I didn't find someone who wanted to live internationally like I do.

@@itchyfeetonthecheap guess you just minimise horizons a little. Ive moved solo to uk and solo back to a different state in Aus before, always find friends and so on - but non English speaking old be a challenge so through a teaching year or something might be a way of setting up a base. Once you felt comfortable it'd be easier I imagine. Have to remind myself its a privilege to have to opportunities to as well as so many don't.

Well said. Western countries like Canada are good places to raise a family or follow more conventional career paths. But if you don't have kids and don't need the stability then the appeal is much less. I agree that Cambodia and other places are interesting and stimulating and get you out of your comfort zone and into a living zone. In Canada the comfort zone can too often become a smothering zone.
@itchyfeetonthecheap2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I didn't mention that in the video, but having kids makes a big difference. I don't know what it's like to have kids, but I could see it changing my willingness to live in a country like Cambodia. That being said, I do know lifelong expat kids and they are generally pretty cool kids.

SEA is fun and games if you have the mindset of a teenager. Personally, after working in the ESL industry for 4years, I can safely say that I would NEVER want my kid to go to school out here. As for buying property I've already had to move out three times because of super noisy neighbours. Imagine if the apartment was actually my own property. I'd be completely screwed!
