I have never been to South Africa but I agree on all the 'odd' things in the U.S. as I have been there many times. Do we want to talk as well about the humongous portions of food served at restaurants, half of which gets thrown away? Or the freezing cold in the middle of summer because of the blasting AC. If you go to the movies, you have to make sure you bring along a sweater and some socks is you don't want to freeze!! So you end up going from scorching hot to freezing cold each time you go in and out of a bus, mall, restaurant, movie theater. My question is: WHY?

I'm a South African living in the US, thanks for appreciating SA. Wish I could share it with my friends here.

You best believe if you see a price on the shelf in SA, God forbid it rings up at a higher price at the till. We're calling the CEO to complain and we're definitely paying the lower price!!

When in the States i used to trip on those super fast disclaimers at the end of every ad, especially on the radio.

The tax thing will have me screaming over the rooftop😱😱 why is the customer left guessing how much extra they are still gonna pay at the till? America you need to toyitoyi for that one🤣🤣 it's crazy, how do u budget?

We are not left guessing. We all know the tax rate where we live. I always add 10% to the bill in my head and I make sure I have at least that much. Not all items are taxed. Moreover, it is illegal to hide the tax in the final price. We are required to list every tax separately. The highest sales tax I have seen in the US is in Chicago at 10%. Some states have no sales tax at all. Oregon and New Hampshire are some of these states.

There is no sales tax in Oregon and New Hampshire. Plus it is illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon and New Jersey.

Lawyers are not allowed to advertise by law (It's called "tauting") - only under strict conditions.

Tax answer: My hunch is because city and local taxes are not standardized in America and can be updated by locality. For example you may pay more tax 10 min over in another city or locality and it would be tough for the manufacturers or the sellers to calculate that update outside of their information system.
