My wife and I been living in Canada now for 8 months and I can honestly agree that it is expensive. In South Africa I wasn't earning much and living month to month and now I am earning a lot more money in Canada but still living month to month. The weather is kak in winter but summer and autumn are awesome. Reason for leaving Mzansi was too much damn crime. Been a victim of 3 attempted hijackings, 1 mugging, 2 armed robberies, seen people get stabbed in front of me, had a friend who got shot in the neck. Eventually you say enough is enough. I now have no issues walking with my wife late at night, we don't worry about locking doors, neighbours dogs barking at night doesn't freak me out, seeing kids play in the street unsupervised. Literally ZERO crime where I live now! Its the safety, security and freedom of living that will keep me here. I do miss South Africa especially the beach, the people, braai's, cultures and the never ending summer but I do not regret my decision when it comes to the quality of life we have here.

I'm sorry to hear about how crime affected you personally here in SA. Our government needs to sort out the issue of crime and our unsafe & porous borders. The issue of safety should be top on their list or else this country will continue to lose our hardworking, peace loving and skilled workers while attracting criminals and terrorists in our country. If they can sort that, it should be easy to deal with documented SAn criminals and illegal ones. We noticed how our law enforcement was all over the streets during the recent EFF rally aka 😢 'national shut down", if they can do that, why can't they deal with crime and corruption swiftly?

Hey all, I thought I'd add my thoughts too given that I've come from the UK and lived in South Africa for 14 years now. I've lived in Limpopo and now based in the western cape. I love it here. I find people so friendly. The UK is a very unfriendly place - I found my own people cold and un-interested. Here you can sit down next to someone you never met and learn their whole life story then they are gone again. The weather is fantastic here. I'm a teacher (in a private school admittedly) but find school children here far more respectful. My kids get a good education. I've been robbed more in the UK than here. I walk at night in the streets in cape town and don't feel particularly unsafe. There are just areas you avoid. The grass is not greener on the other side - prices are rising everywhere. Everyone is getting squeezed financially!

After reading almost all comments, the whole debate boils down to: What does one prioritize? What trade-offs is one willing to make? How optimistic is one, that the situation at home will get better, or at least not get worse in the next 5 to 10 years? Where is one currently positioned on the economic landscape? I believe cold weather or expensive housing would not be a deterrent to someone who has suffered a series of violent crimes, or a masters graduate that has been sitting at home for the past five years. At the same time a wealthy person who owns an off-the-grid mansion in a safe estate may not see the need to relocate.

The reality of the situation, even for the wealthy, is the optimism for the future and what are their expectations. As you said, you can send your child to the most expensive school, get a masters from UCT and yet they're sitting at home becausethey cant get a job or because of the quota system. What about the fear of crime when shopping or trying to go out with family and friends; the lifestyle aspect of it all... living safely in your gated community isn't ideal and quite isolated. There is also the case of expats who left in 2013 saying they'll come back to SA 10 years later hoping things would be better... is SA better now than it was 10 years ago... or even 10 years before that or has it been deteriorating in the last 20 years? Wealthy South Africans cannot live in a bubble unfortunately.

I live in the UK. I can say that if you are not doing well financially here, low crime and stable electricity grid, quickly become irrelevant as you are struggling to pay your utility bills and other bills. If you can't afford to live in a good area, you will be stuck with bad schools if you have kids. Unfortunately the percentage of kids from those schools going to university is low. Therefore struggle to secure good paying jobs later on in life. They are obviously some benefits living here but if you lived well in SA never take that for granted.

I was going to say that if you have an option to pack your whole life and leave then you’re not doing too badly. Most South Africans don’t have that luxury of just leaving. We have to stay and continue going to ward meetings and continue going to campaign for a better life. It takes all of us to have a passion and investment in making our country better because honestly it is a handful of people who are dividing us and distracting us with petty ideas of race and class. We are all South African and once we put silly differences aside, we’ll realise that more of us that are GOOD. Our country deserves for us to stay, our children deserve a better country. Remove the leaders from power and they will finish each other off. I disagree. For me, South Africa is the best country. I will never move to another country. The people, different cultures, weather, business opportunities, career growth opportunities, education options, technological growth prospects, nature. My friends who moved abroad constantly tell me they miss South Africa, after moving around 10 years ago thinking life abroad had much more to offer. Besides that, from my personal experiences, I can confidently say that I love South Africa because it the best country in the world.

Running away from a country as opposed to moving towards a country are two different mind sets which create two different approaches. You have to integrate into the way of life of the society you move into - they have different problems. Moving towards a new country allows you to search out the issues those citizens face and then be able to make an informed decision about the cons there and the cons of your originating country.

I was having a conversation with a German couple while my wife and I were on honeymoon and we were talking about South Africa and how we have plans to move to another country and they brought up "is that not disservice to South Africa", instead of fixing the problem people with skills and money run away from the problem (I.e immigrating). Moved to Saskatoon in 1986. Moved to Toronto then Hamilton. Back to SA in 1996. Johannesburg for 20 years, working as a CA in corporate. Back to Toronto 2015. It was tough to get into the job market. Even though I have been a Canadian since 1989, I was still an immigrant with no Canadian experience. Cold called and got a great consulting role in Forensics. Easily earning a top 5% salary. But gave up the opportunity. So had no choice. Moved back to SA in 2019. Except .. to Cape Town. Extremely happy in Cape Town where I work from home as a forensics expert. No shortage of work and I'm highly skilled here. Such a beautiful place. And nothing compares to the warmth of South Africans. Canada is cold and the people are superficially friendly. I have peace of mind though because I'm invested in property in Toronto and Montréal. I'm not stressing out about the state of the country. Back in 2015 Zuma and Nkandla pushed me to divest. Very grateful to have followed my instincts.

Lived in New Zealand for almost 4 Years , and now started the process of going back to SA. New Zealand is great, way less crime and when it happens it's just petty crime, schools are A bit mediocre when I compare to SA private schools. We left south africa with a plan to come back after a few years and now is the time to go back home. We miss the people, food, culture. Kids can play outside freely but spend too much time indoors because people keep to themselves.....we just can't get used to that

Go see and experience, and decide later after being in the country for long enough. There's alot of people coming back but some come back with permanent residency and citizenship so that gives people a peace of mind, knowing that if thing had to go wrong in SA, they can just jump on the plane and go back without applying for visa or finding a job first

Struggling with rent, and being priced out of the property market. People end up doing things they never thought they would do in Africa, like working in fast food restaurants and uber on top of their normal job.... to me that's the worst quality of life, didn't come here to slave away my life for peanuts. Would choose Africa any day. Most times people just stay there so that they can tell people they have relocated to a developed country, while their quality of life has deteriorated significantly.

As someone whose parent moved our family overseas and schooled & lived in a foreign country for many years…the grass always seems greener. But South Africa is still top class compared to many of these countries. It is cost effective and we are absolutely spoiled here in SA. Material things will never compare to the warmth and friendliness and the feeling of belonging in South Africa and with your family. Lets put things into perspective, you cant just say moving to Canada is this or that - its like saying you moved to Cape Town and all of SA is expensive and beautiful. I moved to Ontario Canada and it was the worst experience - cold weather (you wont see sun for at least 7months unlike some other parts of Canada) , some of the most unfriendly and miserable people I have ever met and just a horrible place to live (note I came from Cape Town and not some little dorpie which may be just as boring as Ontario). I spent some time in Alberta and I tell you what, its beyond beautiful - it really depends where you live and whether you can manage the cold - we have experienced -40C many times. We are busy packing up and leaving for a warmer climate (not back to SA) and I will say I am exceptionally happy to be leaving. Fortunately I call a spade a spade, whereas some people will try and convince themselves they made a better choice to move. Dont get me wrong, some people are happy in Canada, but ive met many who arent , even Canadians.

I lived in Canada in the 90s from North York to Downtown Eglinton and Bathurst. The biggest issue is family for Expats,lucky I had family from Aunts to Cousins. Let's be honest the average White South African lives a above average lifestyle in south africa from more exclusive suburbs jobs higher salaries private education to the average black brown south african. Maybe for those going over to Canada would always be seen as safety issues reverse racism issues jobs and security for there kids future. Remember these are universal issues and impacts all people looking for a better life for family. Black / Brown / white South African's are all making the move overseas Toronto has a Massive expat community since the 70s already. Guys remember this that the Arrogance and Attitudes from government officials make it worst also the worsening of local governments bankrupt municipalities to bordering on a country that's a failed state fuels the exodus of expertise out this country. Depends on what you value as "luxuries". Having a safe environment for your children is a luxury in South Africa. Having reliable water and electricity is a luxury in South Africa. So yes, there are compromises, but, it depends on what you value. Banking in SA is more advanced than most countries, food is relatively cheap and VERY high quality in South Africa, consumers are well protected in SA in terms of purchases AND the climate/natural beauty is amazing. The ONLY bad part of South Africa is crime. (corruption is a crime)

Been living in Canada for 15 years. The weather is a big turn off. It’s cold for 7-8 months of the year. If you haven’t experienced -40 weather, consider yourself lucky. The food here is not pleasant and it’s expensive. One thing I don’t like is the bread. Makes me miss good’ol Albany and Sasko. Yes, there’s more opportunities, but housing is expensive. Rent can sometimes exceed your monthly income. You’d actually find better and more affordable housing in gated communities of Joburg. People are very friendly. Not as lively and open as South Africans, but very polite and generous and helpful if you need anything. South Africans I’ve met come here to work or studying, then when winter comes around, they go back home.

I think it comes down to your tolerance for risk (crime, economic prospects etc.) If you're risk prone, then SA is an ideal place to create economic opportunities, have a good lifestyle etc. If you're risk averse, then Cananda ticks a number of boxes in terms of safety, economic stability etc. Either comes at a trade-off, with there being no right answer.

For some people it’s hard to live abroad, because they got so used to cheap labour in RSA. I left RSA years ago, but I never grew up with a housekeeper or so, so for me such things have not been a problem. I don’t personally even know a single person over here who has a housekeeper. When we emigrated to Australia my son was put back a year as the Australian government assumed our education was far behind theirs. Well my son was way ahead of his class and his teachers were amazed. Your experience is so similar to mine of the 80s (but with one Masters degree). I told my children the other day that I lived with my parents up and till the age of 27 years. It was so humiliating. And yes, we could all rightly blame the Nazi-apartheid government. I moved from SA to Canada as an international student. Unlike most South Africans here, I am not highly skilled so it has been tough to find work. I'm working as a waitress and I miss home so much. My family wanted me to come here because we have been victims of crime and the situation in SA seems to get worse every time. I so conflicted on what to do- I love SA but the crime is worrying, and the fact that I struggled to get work both there and here is another concern. But I miss my family and home so much that I just want to be home. I can definitely say the grass is not greener here- there's less crime but so much drug use. I haven't been robbed but I've gotten catcalled repeatedly to the point where I'm sometimes scared to walk alone. I don't mind the winters but because the places I've stayed had little to no heating (very old houses and terrible landlords), it does get tough. If I was in a position where I had a stable job and income, I might not be so conflicted

I've been living in the US for 15 years but now I'm in the process of moving back to SA. I am beginning to appreciate South Africa more now than I ever have in the past. Yes, there's crime and corruption, but SA feels right. I can send my kids to school without ever worrying that they may not come back because some lunatic could just shoot them. I can go to the malls without any fear of getting killed for no reason. I would also argue that true happiness does not really exist in the northern hemisphere. Everyone lives in fear, neighbors don't know each other, you can trust to leave your kids with anyone, and the children are kept inside even when the weather is nice.

(Wind does not blow constantly, the sun is not always shining, and droughts, etc. decreases the availability of water to generate power.) I am not up to speed with electrolysis, but I understand that electricity is needed to accomplish the process. Do you know whether the output power derived from this process exceeds the input power? Coal, oil and gas (which are renewable) is certainly the best option for consistent base load generation.

Our learners are passing because the department of education is giving them free marks and also apply certain criteria to progress them while a learner has failed 3 subjects. Recently, some chapters in Grade7 Mathematics were canceled and will only be included in Grade8. A lot is going wrong in our education system, hence UNW Vice-Chancellor once mentioned this in one of his comments this year and our Minister refuted the statements because she knows the honest truth. 30% pass mark does exist in the form of their progression criteria. I wonder in what areas you think SA competes with the best because if you talk of the world's most livable places, SA doesn't even make the C-list. What drives people to move is different for every individual. The is nothing special about leaving South Africa for Canada or anywhere else for that matter. What I've noticed is that the white South African population in particular does not like being under a black government and criticizes almost anything it tries to do and some think leaving the country is the best option. When they get to another country for example Australia they live amongst their own little community trying to mimick the life they had in SA instead of adapting to the new settings.

One of my colleagues is South African and if it wasn't for her elderly mother still being there she would never set foot in SA ever again. Once her mother has passed away she intends to renounce her SA citizenship. She tells me she thanks God every day that she was able to escape to Australia. Too much crime in South Africa.

At least Canada appreciate our kids skills, my daughter and son in law immigrated two years ago. He is already promoted to junior manager and got salary increases. In South-Africa they felt alienated by the political situation. Yes, they miss SA and their family and friends, but they made a sacrifice for a better life. All is not perfect but the government systems work, crime is nonexistence in the part where they reside, and they can afford to save money to buy a house. Currently they are renting. If South-Africa had the ability to grow further after the ANC took over than we would have been a striving country, but with the political interferences and kleptomania, our beloved country is becoming dangerously unstable.
