I was born in Stoke on Trent 1972, you either worked down the Pits or in the Pot Banks, I started work at 16 as a welder fabricator then started onsite steel erector at 18 for 28 years working 60-70 hours a week all over the place. I had three beautiful kids but only had them at weekends due to working away. I had an opportunity to work overseas on a two-year contract in tax free country. I've never looked back it was the hardest decision I've ever made to leave my home & loved ones. I've always wanted a boat and to sail free the only way to do this and retire before I'm old and broken body like my dad. So, we made a 10-year plan. I have 2 years left I already have my yacht which will soon become my home. I am a proud English man & hate what has happened to my country over the last 50 years, I tell my kids to get out ASAP because now I'm not a proud English man I'm a far-right thug & threat society. I will never come back & it breaks my heart.

As an eastern european, I came to UK for a better life in 1998 and stayed for 16 years. Best times of my life... It wasn't easy, but it was exciting and I've experienced so much. I went back to London this year in July and I was shocked at what UK has become. A total shithole. At times, I felt like I was in India or Middle East, rather than in Europe. I live debt-free in Thailand. I live in an older condo in Pattaya (a 5-minute scooter ride to the beach). It is all concrete, so the rooms are quiet (I have a video of the condo). I am on the ninth floor, so the sunsets are great, and I do not have much trouble with mosquitoes or road noise. We have a large pool with a slide. There is a restaurant by the pool; most meals are 3-7 dollars. My rent is $207/month. I have a new wall unit A/C, that I run 24/7 and my electric bill is $30/month. My room is 270 square feet or 30 square meters. It has plenty of room for a single guy. I have no plans to move back to the States.

Bro, why comment on something you have absolutely no knowledge of? I’m my own man and not some beta male. Firstly, I decided to go to Thailand and my missus didn’t have much of a say about it. She followed me to Thailand. And chose to split her time with the UK because she has family and business commitments. My missus was looking to move out full-time when I’d set up my new business, and I was the one who said Thailand wasn’t the place. My missus is an absolute diamond. How many women in a long-term relationship would be OK with their man heading to Bangkok and Pattaya to live when she isn’t there all the time? It’s called a solid and trusting relationship.

I lived in Hong Kong for six years and it didn't take long to come to the realisation that summer is very similar to a UK winter. By that, I mean going outside is not particularly pleasant, unless you enjoy being drenched by the high humidity. You do acclimatise to some extent but I never found it pleasant. I moved from Hong Kong, to the USA after being offered a very nice job there (I have an Engineering degree). Back then, in 2001, the USA was extremely affordable and great value. I became accustomed to the US way of life, which has to be the most comfortable and convenient that I've experienced - I've been to 70+ countries and 40 US States, so feel somewhat qualified to give that outlook. What I was not foreseeing was being denied entry to the USA in 2016 and accused of a thought crime, one that I had never imagined. I've been back in the UK for almost two years now after a stint in Vietnam, I think the UK (Scotland in my case) is a fantastic place to live in comparison to most of the other nations I've lived in. Life is what you make of it, at the end of the day.

We left Australia forever earlier this year for similar reasons. It is not as far down the gurgler as the UK but they both have similar issues. I think the most important thing is to ensure that you are not a UK tax resident. Once that is achieved you can be flexible as to where you want to be throughout the year and it doesn't have to be one place.
@mrdamianking

I’ve been looking into the tax issue for some time. Surprisingly, I found the U.K. not as bad as some European countries, but when you take into account property prices and the cost of living, it becomes expensive. Certainly, the new government is not helping.

@intellectualgladiata
@intellectualgladiata 4 күн бұрын
@Theyadayada , the ultimate life hack is if you can pull a good first world income, avoid high taxation and enjoy a cheaper cost of living elsewhere. For many people hitting each one of those will be difficult so a compromise between them is what works best that will be dependent on each persons wants and needs. The fact the countries like Australia and the UK now essentially take half of what you earn make it near impossible for people to build up wealth so if you can develop a profession where your location doesn't matter sticking around a high tax and high cost of living nation makes no sense.

This resonated a lot with me. I lived in south east Asia for nearly 10 years (4 of them in Thailand and the rest in Malaysia and Myanmar) but currently live in London where I’ve been for the last 4 years. While Thailand was an amazing time, I got tired of jumping through hoops just to stay there and the lack of financial security and upward mobility. Malaysia and Myanmar were a bit better in that regard but due to Covid I was forced back to the Uk where I’ve based myself and gotten relatively comfortable and settled. But trouble is brewing on the horizon here and anyone with any sense will think of a get out plan. I don’t blame the immigrants, i blame our inept government and selfish politicians. I myself have been an economic migrant seeking a better life than the miserable existence i had growing up in a deprived northern town.

Completely agree with this. I moved to Thailand in 2003 and probably would have stayed there if they had come up with a sane visa system. Moved on to Malaysia (oh Penang I miss you so much!) and later Philippines, which became my second home. I'm now also looking to rebase out of UK and take early retirement - the budget pretty much forces me to do this. First preference is Holland - first worked there in the 80s and fell in love with the people and the country. But housing is not cheap, so we have a couple of exploratory trips to France lined up. For various reasons (some of which you mentioned) I decided to close that chaper of my life, but I was reluctant to return to the UK. I've been in rural Ireland since 2022. I left the UK two years ago for Portugal. It's not cheap there anymore. Property prices are silly. The Tax is high, the bureaucracy is insurmountable, incompetence and dishonesty are a problem. It's beautiful though and people are nice. I didn't stay. Spain is better and cheaper, but still high tax and it's not pretty like Portugal is. You know what the weather will be. You know the customs, the culture and language. Nice vlog mate. Enjoyed that. I've never been to Thailand and always wanted to go visit, but I know I couldn't hack the heat. European heatwaves nearly kill me as it is. Anyway, I left UK for mainland Europe back in the late 90's and never ever regretted it. Sure I miss some things like the super friendly northern folk where I'm from (south of Manchester) and sometimes I really wish I could live back there, but if I'm being honest I don't think I ever could. I'd probably enjoy it for 3-4 weeks before I started itching to leave. Plus the area around where I'm from has really changed since I was a kid, and not for the better. In fact not one single thing is better or improved. So, good luck to you and the girlfriend in your new life. Excited to see where you chose. Spain, Italy, Portugal maybe ?

Absolutely fantastic video and I think you nailed so many issues, with both Thailand and the UK. I left UK in 2003 for Thailand and lived there happily for three years before moving on to Malaysia and the Philippines. I then adopted a split time approach with winters in SEA and summers back in UK. But now, for the reasons you so well described in your video, I am looking to rebase for early retirement. The last budget was the final straw for me - Britain is done, there is no question about it, and there is no coming back. Sad, but true. My preference would be to move to Holland or Denmark, but we are now focusing in on France. It's going to be interesting to see where you end up going!

I moved to Thailand in 2/02, and my first visit there was in 99. Life was good, but over the years, things started to change from the Gov't immigration policy to rules in general. Then the caliber of expats started to change, too, and not in a positive way either. I finally ended up in Udon Thani in 07, and it started to negatively change also. I left for good in 10/10. I'm still in SE Asia but not in Thailand and avoid it if at all possible. Many of the expats that I met when I moved there ended up returning to their countries of origin, too. Look at all the crime that is now happening. Thailand used to be a relatively safe place in Asia, but that ship sailed a long time ago.

Is there truly a place that feels like home-a paradise that is open-minded, multicultural, full of acceptance, and kindness? Sadly, with the rise of social media, that sense of unity seems to have faded. Today, we find ourselves in a society that feels more divided, intolerant, and lacking a place we can truly call home. However, I firmly believe that if we open our hearts, embrace people no matter where they come from, and offer a helping hand to those who need it most, we can create a kinder world-one that brings peace to our souls and hope to others. Wherever we go from here, it’s home, regardless of the climate. Ignore what the little bird told me; the true intention behind actions-whether from ourselves or authorities-is what truly matters. 🤗❤

Thanks for your story. I have lived in Thailand for 1 year and agree with much of what you said. Although I don't agree with blaming refugees or illegal immigrants for England's woes. Studies have shown that the vast majority of refugees are gainfully employed and solid members of society. I believe it is only far right radicalism that focuses on the minority who don't. Also I do not condone hate speech, and that is why people are being arrested or fined. You can validly talk about your opinions and thoughts without resorting to demonising a class of people or spewing hate on the internet. It is simple respect and tolerance before speaking or typing. Anyway thanks for the video, and like I said I understand and agree with your take on life in Thailand. Have a great new life, wherever that may be.

I had always lived in Hampshire UK but dreaming of Scotland and the fresh air and the amazing towns and countryside, As an expat speaking reasonably good Thai and a good lifestyle, why on earth would I leave.. I'm not sure myself, but it is an overwhelming feeling that sense Will I remain here in Thailand or up sticks and move to Scotland.. the jury is out, as we say..

You make some really interesting and valid points. I’m not sh1ting on Thailand because I love the place. But I did start to question things like the quality of certain produce we eat day. Such as street food. I love it but the vendors definitely aren’t using free range eggs or organic meat 🤣 Yet in the U.K. most people I know wouldn’t dream of buying that type of produce in their local supermarket. I’m probably going to get annihilated in the comments for my 1st world problems. But you do start to consider things like that when it comes to maintaining health.

The % of immigrants is very small Damian, compared to other countries...and the irony you moved as an immigrant to Thailand !
@mrdamianking

Wrong. I said “illegal” immigrants. HUGE difference. You have misquoted me. The fundamental difference is that I arrived in Thailand legally with a visa and paid my own way. If you’re going to have a dig at someone get it right next time or you end up looking silly.

@mrdamianking you're wrong again Damian..! : No human being is' illegal' as you referred to them, seeking asylum is a human right - one you would also have access to if the UK ever came under attack. Refugees should be supported based on their need for protection, not how they arrived. Under the Refugee Convention, it is not unlawful to travel to the UK irregularly in order to seek protection. The UK is home to just 1% of refugees who have been displaced across the world. And despite what some media might say, the UK isn’t 'overrun' with refugees and at the end of 2023, they make up around 0.6% of the UK population. Based on the number of asylum applications per head of population, the UK currently ranks 20th highest in Europe. So before your next post..some research would be useful and not from Facebook! 😂😮😅

After finishing three universities (debt-free at taxpayers expense) I had to take my knowledge and skills abroad as the UK doesn't value what I have to re-pay or contribute back to the economy. Another country valued what I (and thousands of other expats) had to offer. I then returned to the UK after 18 years to find a broken country and economy. I couldn't get over how very 'third world' it had become, even more so than the developing country I lived in. Having an education and being classed as a 'knowledge worker' makes me incompatible in a job market that only recruits carers, counsellors, and support for drug addition. British companies seem to do everything they can to dissuade people from applying for jobs, unlike other countries where companies encourage people through the door. At my age, I'm never going to find work in the UK ever again ... well .., not until I learn how to weld propellors on the back of ships, get fit enough to catch chickens, or learn how to speak fluent German and French so I can drive a forklift. My hometown was populated by a huge Polish immigrant community, but even they have left because work and living conditions are so much better in Poland - and who can blame them? I cannot think of one positive thing about the UK.

Great video Damian. Somewhere i never considered was Tenerife, as i thought it was just filled with lager lout brits. There are areas it is, but the island is so diverse, its not difficult to avoid them. The weather is perfect, and you can literally travel to different parts of the island to experience the various seasons. Granted it is small, but flights anywhere are easy, and there is so much packed into such a small island. Only downside is the cost of rent has gone up, however there are plenty of places you can buy with sone land. I think there is a nomad visa for remote workers which would make life easier for you. Cheers 👍

Ok damian great little vlog with your honest opinions I am retired living in Thailand about the same time as you, but unlike you i didnt move to any tourist areas in thailand ,especially the south I live in a beautiful village in issan 20 min drive to khon kaen which has every thing i need in a city Trust me it is full of fantastic people, roads inforstructure are far better than most southern cities except bangkok , but for me bangkok is a place to visit not to live I go back to england to visit family and friends and to be honest like you i miss my seasons in the uk and the fact that i again lived outside the city loved my walks in the countryside, what i miss most because thailand is too hot for big walks I have the same view as you on how the uk is run If i had my time again and not living in thailand, one thing i would be doing in uk, i would have sold my house bought myself a nice motorhome or a caravan on the coast ,my favourite place whitby i had a static caravan there loved it Anyway mate i have a channel here in isaan micks thai travels, ido love travelling and vlogging gives me something to keep me occupied keeps me sane Love life out here in rural Thailand if i want to go anywhere just jump in car or bike or even get on a plane its that simple Miss my family back home but my new home is thailand, its a shame we still have to regard ourselves as second class citizens here with all this visa nonsense, but in a way thailand does better than uk Nice to see your adventure ,check mine out and i hope you find what your looking for in life I have living in a nice village with great people , but i do miss the seasons Maybe have a chat some cheers 🍻

Good luck with your journey…totally agree with everything you said and kudos to you for being proactive and making a change. For what it’s worth, I’d focus on doing what’s right for you and not a woman or anyone else. It might sound harsh, and it’s not supposed to, but blood is stronger than water. That’s not to say you can’t love, but the main thing is to focus on you, your family and building your empire. If you can find a way to make you happy, everything else will fall into place and a woman should fit within your world. Good luck with the journey and I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes you…👊

Sorry to hear it hasn't worked out for you in Thailand. I am planning a move abroad myself next year and I went to Thailand in September for a 'see if I like it' trip. I actually agree with some of what you said especially with it being 'unbearably hot' sometimes. I still really like it though and think that it is a very good place for location independent businesses and expats and still.plan to go out there. I look forward to hearing about where you do eventually end up living! You are right though thr UK is in decline and even if one place doesn't work you explore other options.

Nothing to be sorry about Simon. I had a blast. I love the place and I’ll likely be back out early next year. I just didn’t see myself buying property and making it the place I called home in 10/20/30 years. The great thing about working remotely is that I can base myself anywhere. I highly recommend Thailand btw. Where are you considering moving to?

@mrdamianking I'm considering moving to Bangkok. I really enjoyed the city and loved the place and the people. I also made an effort to see areas other than Asok and Sukhumvit in Bangkok! I explored Onnut, Phra Nakhon - where my hotel was, Tao Poon, Bang Son, Udon Suk, Punnawithi - where True Digital Park and Nanthaburi. There seemed to be so much going on there. I'm part time online trader and will hopefully male it my full time occupation. The plan is by this time next year move out to Thailand and find a condo to rent.

@simonnaylor7983 Bangkok is awesome. I used to live in On Nut back in 2021. I’d like to think I helped put it on the map as I got loads of my KZbin food bloggers to film there. If you’re into the gym, Muscle Factory in On Nut is great. Bangkok is also a great place to connect with fellow entrepreneurs. Best of luck

Wow, those views are unbelievably close to mine. It was like listening to the daily thoughts in my head. I wish you all the best where you go. And as a freelance web designer/dev even the flexibility of the job aspect is similar. I too want to escape but have a more complex family situation and others to consider, but have made the decision to do what I can in 2025 to make this happen. To leave to someone with good weather that is safe. In an ideal world my own plot of land to build a house on.

Everyone has a spiritual home, when you see the places on news that keep flooding and you yell at the TV why don't you move, it's because it's home to them, same when you fly in to local airport you feel at home not saying you should stay there because of this feeling but it's why a lot do

great video. you told your story well. just out of interest, how digitised is everything out there? is smartphone a necessity? is cash use still strong? in the uk, everyone pays for things with cards or phones, things are cheaper if you "download the app". and ATMs are often out of service. they are deliberately steering us towards a cashless society with the aim of achieving greater control of people's behaviour. wondered what the situation is an Asian megacity and the country as a whole
