I am a 66-year-old lifelong single guy with no kids. I am not rich but I have more than I need. I'm already a slave to 'stuff' I own so accumulating more isn't appealing. I have politely declined every "once in a lifetime opportunity" ever offered to me. I never click on hyperlinks embedded in emails and I've ignored a fortune in cash & merchandise I've "won" over the years. In a past video Paul notes the distinction between a victim and a volunteer. Keep your wallet closed and you won't be scammed. I won't travel anywhere without doing extensive research on safety and knowing the do's and don'ts. I get all the valor I'll ever need knowing I'm the son of a selfless, soft-spoken WWII combat veteran who devoted his entire life to his family. I hope some day to visit the Philippines and perhaps live there. Up to this point I've lived entirely for myself, I'd like to spend some of my remaining years volunteering to help others. We'll see.

I was in Bangkok when those Murders appeared in the newspaper in 2014 and was disgusted to see photos taken at the scene of both victims appearing on facebook and I don't mind saying it took me some time to get over seeing the force used to disfigure the females face and think that only an animal with no concious could inflict such damage and not another human being and yet it was and a deplorable act. That the lives of these two young foreigners lives could be terminated in such a way is awful and it was only 2 weeks earlier that together with my Thai girlfriend had spent many an evening on the Beaches of Koh Phangan BUT because there were many lovely Beaches that when night fell large parts of them were in darkness and I was always very aware to avoid them and made sure we only ever walked in the near vicinity of Beach Resort and their lights and others near by. I cant but think if they both had observed this strict code of practice then what befell them would have never happened. That said being from the U.K. young women and men are also murdered just being in the wrong place at the wrong time as it also has its fair share of animals so always give thought and consideration to when, where and at what time you place yourself in a certain location no matter where you are in the World. By the way I reported the persons channel to facebook that had posted those horrible photos and was relieved to see that acted upon soon after.

It was a trick I remember a drug company salesman turned psychology personal development coach once taught us in a work training course to use when building rapport with people.. Umm, also trust but verify (ask the person calling something that only you and them know?). That said, compared to many other places, the Philippines still sounds like a very safe, welcoming and beautiful place to live. Still not put off tho! Ten years and counting until I have saved enough to retire comfortably. Tick-tock, the wait is truly mind-numbingly infuriating!!

Hi Paul, anybody is fooled by a heart-warming compliment, especially if you have gone through a hard time. About the child's story that is mentioned, the answer to that is to ask a question that would identify a distant relative known to the child. That would solve the matter instantly, seeing that whoever is demanding the ransom will not have that information.

Perfect Timing Paul - I was chatting with some Filipinos here in San Diego about your most recent video and our discussion centered around the number of expats in the PI. Your guest, Ian is spot on and it's a shame that there are a lot of bad folks who have reinvented themselves in Southeast Asia. When in doubt, do your research. Btw, I'm a former Internal Auditor who has worked on Fraud cases, which resulted in jail/prison time. I can tell you that a lot of fraudsters are actually very friendly, outgoing and likeable. Only use your gut feel if it is warning you of a potential scam. Fake/shell companies, sure-fire investments, sick family, billing schemes, identity theft, fake reimbursements - these are only a few ways you can be defrauded. Social Engineering is primary when scamming individuals, so be safe out there!

A really interesting vlog Paul. "If it sounds too good to be true. It usually is!" Certain types of crimes are thought to be victimless BULL S#!T no such thing. If you don't insure your vehicle (certainly in the UK) it costs everyone who does insure money to finance an "Uninsured Driver Fund" that pays victims of accidents where a perpetrator is uninsured. Fraud cases are a classic. I was involved in the investigation of a case where a couple of companies were set up they had people in management positions in hospitals and were supplying counterfeit drugs to hospitals. In court one accused argued "It's the health service they have billions to spend." The health service in the UK is funded by contributions from everyone working and paying tax. These people weren'r supplying counterfeit low cost drugs. They supplied drugs for oncology, cardiology and other serious illnesses. Packaging looked genuine as did the drugs. Subsequent chemical analysis showed they were fake. So what about the patients with serious illnesses prescribed what everyone believed to be genuine drugs? They had months or years of their lives stolen by people motivated by greed. Scamming is BIG business you don't have to point a gun or knife at someone it can be done remotely but is no less devastating. Couple of years ago I guy I went to school with lost his job he'd done at a company for 30 years. The Finance Director who had been there more than 10 years developed a taste for gambling and ladies who charge by the hour for their companionship. Over several years he'd embezled money from the firm. Eventually while he was on holiday a routine query exposed anomalies the firm was forced into bankrupcy and 22 people lost their jobs!

Before I was a RN and computer tech, I was an insurance agent that specialized in Senior citizen products like Medicare supplements, nursing and homecare, estate planning life insurance, annuity products. I never wanted to put my client's money at risk because they were retired and could not go out and do what they did again to get what they have. When bank CDs went from paying 10% + to 3% a lot of the people went from eating steak to beans and they took the risk of getting into the stock market and lost their ass. I would put them into annuities that were safe and backed up and gave them around 6-7% with a guarantee to never fall below 3-4%. This was a good deal for everyone involved, especially my conscience.
