I understand that your target audience is foreigners who would prefer to be in the heart of a city for multiple reasons. But i was born in Portugal, raised in the US for almost 60 years, and go back there on a regular basis, sometimes 2 to 3 times a year. The issue i have is the same as most guidebooks, certain areas are overhyped and others are completely ignored or mentioned only as a footnote. Portugal has something for everyone regardless of tastes! One big issue i see often is high cost of living, comparatively, of living in the city center. Nobody seems to mention that just by living in the outskirts, and driving 20 minutes, you can buy a home with land instead of an apartment for substantially less! Slower lifestyle, less convenient, but much cheaper. Smaller communities are a great way to go as far as cost while the amenities are still available with a short commute! Where i live, i can be in Porto in 45 minutes, and Aveiro in 15. I know its not feasible to cover everything, but putting it out there for anyone interested!

Yes I agree. And would much prefer to live outside of a city than in a city. Most of us from the United States are used to driving cars and would be happy to have a bit of land and clean air. A garden in the back with some chickens. Lol.
@joaomatos731124 күн бұрын
@belle42 I have property in a small town most people haven't heard of. Unless you're from the area, it's unknown. That being said, I have access to everything, as I can be in multiple urban areas within a reasonable time frame of so required. But living outside the urban framework allows me to have a more relaxed lifestyle while still being able to access anything I need. KZbin videos and travel guides always accentuate the larger cities, understandably so for people on the move, but doesn't account for those of us sick of the rat race looking for a more quiet lifestyle amongst life's headaches. Not everyone has the choices I've been granted through a lifetime of hard work and cautious investments, but you still have options! You can have a multimillion apartment in the center or a $200,000 sprawling property just outside of city limits, it depends on your needs and wish lists!

Braga has a university, and a great vibe! Braga has a big Brazilian expat community. It was one of my favorite cities in Portugal. @@ExpatsEverywhere Would have loved a final list with the cities listed by healthcare, with the green ones at top, the red ones on the bottom. They all run together as the video rolls by, so a final list would be helpful, especially for retirees for whom healthcare access is a particular consideration. For example, I only recall Porto as green; Gaia was yellow (?), but of course bing adjecent to Porto it could still be a good choice. And that brings me to my second wish list item. An indication of how long it would take to get from each yellow city to a green city. A 20 minute distance is very different from 90 minutes... But thanks for the video. Very informative. Maybe a video dedicated to expat retirees in the future, or did you already make one recently? Last, has the tax benefit for expat retirees completely disappeared? Does this mean 47% tax on all passive income, such as social security, 401Ks, etc. That would be a deal-breaker. Pension income was not taxed for 10 years. I could take 10%, maybe 15%, maybe even 20% if it did not have a timeframe limit (if it was locked in). But a marginal tax climbing to 47%? I would think that would eliminate 90% of new incoming retirees and their money...

Good video, Josh. Could I give you a challenge? Make a video about Central Portugal. No farther north than Aveiro, no farther south than Leiria, but stay off the coast. And the last parameter - towns with 50,000 people or less. There are so many scenic, historic towns in this area. You would be the first to do a video like this that I've seen (and I live in Central Portugal so my radar's up!). Obrigada
@ExpatsEverywhere Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Beth. I don't think we're willing to accept that challenge. We couldn't do it justice. These videos take a lot of resources (time, money and sometimes both) to do. There's probably a reason that there's not a comprehensive video guide out there about the topic. My guess is that it just wouldn't get people's attention. I mean, there's an outside chance that it's done like a Peter Santenello-style, but unfortunately, that's just not us. You know? We don't have a car, we have Cia in school, our audience isn't the Santenello-style, so straight out of the gate it wouldn't get the views for KZbin to pick it up. Sorry, that's just my honest response. I'm sure it's not what you wanted to hear but it's the truth. We simply couldn't pull it off well. - Josh

Correction: the island of Madeira IS NOT named after fennel, contrary to the capital Funchal. Fennel is "funcho" or "erva doce" (sweet herb). Madeira means wood, the island of wood, due to the thick forest found by Portuguese navigators when they discovered the island.

We're talking about Funchal. It's named after the word "funcho" or fennel in English. - Josh

@@ExpatsEverywhere yes, absolutely. The banner indicated that the island Madeira was named after fennel, thus my comment.

Is there a green color health care??? I didn’t see one ☝️
@entrophyentrophy95629 ай бұрын
Hi Josh I enjoyed your new video with the healthcare component added. As you know, many expats are relocating to Pt for retirement. Healthcare is a huge priority in searching for the best new home. Do you know of a place where we can look for the best information for cities in Pt. I want more “green” dot places when selecting the best place for me. Thanks for sharing ❤😊

Hey, thanks for the feedback! We definitely know and realize that. It's really difficult to source this information at least in English so we've generally gone to Serenity to ask them. They've got a list of Green Dot places :-) - Josh

You didn't mention Coimbra and its should've been at the top of your list with the oldest university and enchanting villages nearby with top beaches nearby with a 20 mins drive.

I don't know about Portugal's health system but I haven't come across a good doctor. I fell, I couldn't stand the pain in my hand and went to the doctor. An X-ray was taken. They said there was nothing crushed. You returned to your country and it was broken in 2 places. 1 year later, a pain I've never seen in my life. 2 days later I went to the doctor and they asked for an X-ray. I asked for an ultrasound and an MRI, they said no, the result could be gas, kidney stones. 🤔I returned to my country urgently. Both of my kidneys were blocked by stones and they had emergency surgery to remove them.

Hey Expats, love your channel and videos! What is the area/city with the weather closest to Southern California? Thank you in advance ❤️

It seems like Lisbon region and further south along the coast. This could be why many Californians tend to prefer moving there as opposed to the central, north and interior. Thanks for the love. - Josh & Kalie

having lived in Caldas da Rainha I can clearly say that this is what you find online - the reality is very different and I would not recommend anyone moving into this particular area of the country for many different reasons.

Really? Because Caldas da Rainha has one of the most recognized foreign communities now and those that live there seem to love it, although, we personally wouldn't live there. It seems to work for a certain type of person. It sounds like that's not you. - Josh & Kalie

Visited portugal fall 2023, We found that we loved the smaller towns in the north. why? while so so touristy they werent overloaded or well known to tourists or the typical seaside resort towns. as such accomodations were less expensive. Tomar ,Coimbra, Guimaraes were real gems. Porto was too busy, its bridges and downtown river area was nice but , very very touristy. It reflected in prices. Aviero , i felt a bit sorry for, while trying hard to give itself some pizzaz it just lacked any real draw at all. The beach was too far away for east access. If i had wheel to get the ocean nearby that

Coimbra was good to live in maybe ten years ago. Now, public transport is a joke, services are a joke, too crowded, unsafe, overwhelming traffic, dead fish floating in the stinky river...Nobody wants to live there.

Aww, thank you! Both places are nice but have their flaws. I'm leaning towards saying Portimão over Setúbal because outside of the city center, it's not particularly nice and the city center does shutdown kind of early, however, if that's your cup of tea, then it's better than Portimão in that regard. - Josh & Kalie

The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. Continental Portugal is classified as either Csa, Csb, and Csc depending on where you are. Where is this Atlantic climate classification you're referring to? Csa = Hot-summer Mediterranean climate; coldest month averaging above 0 °C (32 °F) (or −3 °C (27 °F)), at least one month's average temperature above 22 °C (71.6 °F), and at least four months averaging above 10 °C (50 °F). At least three times as much precipitation in the wettest month of winter as in the driest month of summer, and the driest month of summer receives less than 40 mm (1.6 in). Csb = Warm-summer Mediterranean climate; coldest month averaging above 0 °C (32 °F) (or −3 °C (27 °F)), all months with average temperatures below 22 °C (71.6 °F), and at least four months averaging above 10 °C (50 °F). At least three times as much precipitation in the wettest month of winter as in the driest month of summer, and the driest month of summer receives less than 40 mm (1.6 in). Csc = Cold-summer Mediterranean climate; coldest month averaging above 0 °C (32 °F) (or −3 °C (27 °F)) and 1-3 months averaging above 10 °C (50 °F). At least three times as much precipitation in the wettest month of winter as in the driest month of summer, and the driest month of summer receives less than 40 mm (1.6 in). - Josh
