So where are the best places to live in Portugal? We have traveled through many areas of Portugal and fell in love with the Algarve. It has so much to offer, especially for those looking for a perfect place to retire or spend extended periods. Exploring from the east to the west coast we got a pretty good feel for what each city had to offer. We will discuss what we liked best about each location and the things we would consider negative. In the end, we will share with you our top three choices of where we could see living.

Guys, Great video and some spot on observations. And love the fact that, as Americans, you don't mind walking and taking public transport. Good on you! My other half and I moved to the Algarve just before COVID in 2019 with our cat Roxy, from Sydney. After being a bit disillusioned with the suburbs of Lisbon, we first moved to Lagos, which as you say get incredibly busy over summer and dies right back in winter with only a few establishments like the expat pubs at all busy. Got a bit sick of taking the single track, diesel train to explore the rest of the coast. It does get expensive and there is a huge gap in the timetable during the middle of the day. Coach depot is at least in town but suffers from the same uneven timetable. And patrons love sitting in seats that aren't allocated to them. Recommend buying a car if you intend to be there long term (electric would be good hear are petrol prices are astronomical). Totally agree, it felt a bit like you were at the out limits of the country. Sagres is stunning but I wouldn't be going to the rugged beaches to the west every day (especially without our own transport). Only major town north is Sines, which we found a bit of an industrial port). Bus and train to Lisbon are both about 4 hours which seems slow for the distance. Portimao is an interesting town. It's kinda in four parts. The north which has a shopping centre and huge hypermarkets. The old town in the middle, which like you say doesn't have quite so much charm or history (read as - everything was built in the 70s). The DMZ as I call it which the stretch of sand dunes and scrub between the town and the beach which is also a good 30 min brisk walk. And the beach Praia da Rocha which is a kinda dated promenade in front of some old holiday high rise apartments, casino and marina (which is painted in vivid 80s orange, yellow and red). Like you say the train station is massively out of town and the bus station is only slightly closer, also one of the most desolate locations in Portugal. If you need to dump a body, this is the place. Albufeira, we found was full of bright red Brits, en masse, on footy trips watching UK Premier League on 80" TVs whilst drinking pints of two Euro Carling Black Label (oh you found the cheap lager, didn't you!). Ferreira is the station you have to change at to get to Lisbon is travelling from the west. Both train and bus station are fairly inconveniently located a taxi ride away from the old town/resort. Praia dos Pescadores is one of the best beaches on the Algarve. Loved Tavira and stayed there a while. Does really die off in winter though. It does have its own SEF/AIMA office if you need one, so you don't have to go to Faro (if you can get an appointment). The shopping centre to the east doesn't feel like it's doing well but does have a big Continente. Oceanside beaches are nice but are exposed and as this is the Atlantic not the Med the water is nearly always cold. Agree, catching the ferry gets a bit tedious. Hinterland is full of orange orchards and little Quintas, well worth a bike ride. Bar and restaurants around the river are charming. There are a lot of salt paddies producing sea salt and stunning flamingos. And proximity to Faro and Spain are a definite bonus.

Interesting that you reviewed No Loule shire. The biggest tourist spend in the Algarve. If you are looking to follow the trend in the Mediterranean, permanent residents are living in the towns in from the touristy coast. Loule, Second richest shire in the country. Extensive arts and Culture spend. Cleaner and better services than any other shire. The three exclusive areas, are on the beach with it's variable seasonal population but Loule is one that is year round. Agreed Tavira and Largos are great, but I have lived in the beachside, gost town winters and full to the brim in high season is a big negative. Having activities, services and facilities is more IMPORTANT for the happy life your viewers are seeking. Glad that you left it off the list. Thanks

I spent 10 days in Portugal this summer with my daughter and grandson. I'll be emigrating there next summer and have had relocation consultants working on my plan for about 6 months now. I loved Portimão and that museum (located in a former sardine cannery) is definitely not to be missed. We also went to Coimbra, Peniche, Ericeira, Lagos, Loulé, and Lisbon. I enjoyed everywhere we went! I am inclined toward the Algarve because it is warmer and I tend to be cold-natured. Thanks so much for this video. You have given me some ideas because I am not sure yet where I want to move first. I'll check out some of your other videos now that I have discovered your channel.

My wife and I may be in a very similar situation. I work in I.T. and my skill set allows me to work anywhere there's an internet connection. We'll be traveling to Portugal in February to March of 2023. My wife was initially thinking Lisbon, but after looking at some of the housing prices, I'm thinking Algarve (specifically Faro/Albufeira), so we'll see how the trip goes. I'm curious as to how your planning is going to making that move. We're moving from U.S.A. and I'll be working for a company based in U.S., but I already have a CPA and that company has employees that work in different countries (Brazil, Mexico, Qatar, etc...), but what are some of the challenges you've faced while preparing for the move, and about how long do you think it would take to make that transition? Thanks for your insight!

Thanks for this very helpful, comprehensive video! I have the impression from other videos I've seen elsewhere that Vila Real de Santo António has a fairly sizeable year-round expat population so the businesses don't shut down in winter like some other smaller towns may do. But I haven't been there in winter and could be mistaken.

Really helpful video. Good to know that the buses are good. Too bad about the trains. Been watching quite a few videos about areas of the Algarve and this is definitely one of the most useful ones I have seen. That´s so funny, so you picked as No 1, towns at either end of the Algarve. Hmm, maybe it should be Albufeira then, right in the middle and one you both picked as No 3. My feeling is Albufeira could be a good choice for myself, but I wonder if it might be too shut down/dead in winter... I guess many bars etc would shut, but other shops would be open for the many locals living there.

We are a retired couple that rented an apartment in Lagos for the past year. I'd have to agree, that for us, Lagos is a bit too quiet in the winter. Only Faro and Portimão can offer a descent life all year round. The rest are are all like villages. Personally i don't like Lagos, it's not my place, but the beach cliffs are stunning yes and freezing water too. Plus it's not a place for old people. For old people its much better the East side after Faro. Flat nice and easy.

@@BrianandCarrie Agreed. We did the same with our trip to the eastern Algarve late last year. Many say a trip to the Algarve "can't be done" without a car. Hi Merrill - very good question! We definitely love the Algarve and can see that as place we will be back to for extended periods. Great take on the Algarve. I can understand the attraction of the coast to anyone visiting the Algarve. But there certainly is a lot for nature lovers and those looking for outdoor activities moving north from the coastline to the slightly more inland side of the Algarve. Places like for example Alcoutim if you're on the East coast, or Querença, Alte or Salir if you're closer to Loule. Granted these places will be picturesque, but a lot quieter; and there will be the need to drive to the next biggest town for many of the services required.

Fantastic and informative video about your experience in the Algarve. As soon as we arrived in Vila Real there was no doubt about it but we were hooked and said we would live there some day. This year we arrived for good and bought a really nice compact apartment a few minutes walk to the Square. We have settled in well and are enjoying the good weather, nice people and great beaches. We have the market across the road and the four main supermarkets a short walk away. We are also about ten minutes walk from the railway station and five minutes to the bus station. We do most of our socialising during the day, ie meet up for coffee, go for drives or cycle to Monte Gordo or further. Winter is quiet but there are still some festivals going on year round so always something to look forward to.

I don't remember you mentioning this, but did you guys sell everything back in the states, including your home, to do this full time? It seems a lot of people who do this, just up and sell all their possessions and jump in, a very bold move, IMO. I like knowing we would still have our home back here in the states in case things didn't work out, so we plan to give ourselves a one year test run and rent our home out while we're gone. Just wondering what you did and your thoughts. Thanks!

Long term rentals in the Algarve are almost impossible to find. If you do find them, they tend to be in areas that are not attractive to tourists which generally means that either the area or the property are not ideal. An alternative is to agree to pay the high season rates during the summer months in order not to have to move out of the property that you have been renting in the low season. I hope this helps.
