You voted so we went there. The Alentejo region in Portugal is massive with loads to offer. Évora is one of the most well-known cities here and that's where you sent Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere along with Ami, G, Valencia, and Pincho.
So what does Évora have to offer? UNESCO World Heritage site status! The Roman and Moorish influence is seen throughout the architecture in the old city. There are a variety of churches and of course the infamous Chapel of Bones.
What about outside of the walls? Be sure to have a car so you can drive around to the wineries, do an olive oil tour, see the cork, and relax at the river beaches. This area has a lot to offer but would you live in this rural region of the country as an expat?

@@ExpatsEverywhere I guess there's no correct Portuguese, since the 'Acordo Ortográfico da Língua Portuguesa' of 2009 (i think), when language representatives from all Pt speaking countries gathered and decided on new orthographic rules to make the language uniform across the globe. Here in Pt not all newspapers adhere to it and if ones knows the language well enough, nor native Europeans Pt speakers always speak it correctly. But taking the wild card, as you guys have taken, isn't for anyone. It takes guts, but "Tudo vale a pena quando a alma não é pequena." Stay safe!

Thanks, Diane. Yep, G has a drone. We haven't been able to use it as much as we would like because of airports and some heritage sites don't allow the GPS of the drone to get it in the air. It's interesting, I think that's the most excited I've seen you all of any place that you've visited outside of Porto. Even then, though, it looked like lots of pleasant surprises for you both in the city and the region. I suspect that English isn't as common, but that may be a bad assumption. Also assume that the people were decent. Temps in the 80's during the day, and it gets below 60 at night? Dang, that's chilly IMO. Anyway, sounds like a place to visit for sure. Looked like there was lots of new housing construction around, based on your quick pics.
@droops63

@@ExpatsEverywhere Appreciate all of that. I was wondering what G and Ami also were thinking, or experiencing. Good to know about the language. What was your impression of the regional accent? Yea, so many folks go to the Algarve, and I can see why. Warm weather and tons of beaches, and lots of other expats, can make it comfortable. Sounds like you found a hidden gem. I'll be curious what your opinions of all of these places are once you've toured the country and seen more. My guess is that opinions will shift a bit here and there based on the comparisons. Great series, it's REALLY helpful IMO.

Nice video, you got the essentials of Évora, but there are some things that were not well explained. Understandably, after all, you probably stood in Évora only for a couple of days, so let me just try to contribute to the city portrait. It's a fact that the city is small, around 50000 population, but that doesn't mean nothing happens. There is a pulsating cultural life all year round. Live music venues. Ok, there are not international concerts here, but all the national stars perform here. The truth is that the cultural programming is more directed to the less commercial scene and more to a little more demanding offer. There are also three resident theatre companies with regular seasons, a classical music academy, also with regular seasons and at the university, there are arts degrees that also are a part of our cultural life. Several museums and art galleries, 6 commercial cinemas, and a cinema club. Regarding the location, weel as far as the south of Portugal concerns, I think it's the best-located city. One hour from Lisbon, therefore the airport, one hour from Spain (Badajoz), five hours by car from Madrid and 2,5h from Seville. 2h from the Algarve, and all with very good roads. As you mentioned in the video. In my view, this location is a serious plus for expats and digital nomads who want to explore all around. Take care.

My daughter is just about Kaley's age. I love Lisbon, (it's currently too expensive for me to live alone there but anyone can get to the capital easily and quickly enough) and I love being by the sea and where I am from (Ottawa, Canada's capital) it's hours of driving to get to the ocean so that is why when I move to Portugal that's where I want to live. I don't know what makes you say that it's a wonderful place to live, but something tells me you've never lived here. Otherwise, you would know that the vast majority of the people who live in Évora don't like anyone who comes from outside of Évora unless they can hook them up with some kind of advantage, the knitting circle is on your back the entire time that you live there, you can't make friends because you are not "one of them" (it really becomes depressing), and even the locals want to leave. It doesn't matter how long you have lived here, they refuse to take you in, even if you are Portuguese from another town or city. It has the highest rent in Portugal besides Lisbon because there are too many people for not enough property (having a university with ten thousand students from across the world in a city of 70 thousand doesn't help, apartments get split into individual rooms and there are NO apartments for rent) and the landlords happily take advantage of that, renting out tiny cockroach infested apartments for the price of a castle AND they don't sign a rental contract because they cheat the tax man, so renters have no rights and you fear being kicked out of your apartment at any moment. People refuse to speak Portuguese to you even if you tell them that you need to practice your Portuguese, you get socially excluded. The communists are in control of everything, if you are not a kamarad, forget it. There is nothing here for children, you are expected to be an adult. Everyone is a hypocrite. It is full of mentally ill people, especially of the narcissistic variety, and everyone is an alcoholic, and I do mean the get wasted every night until you drop kind, with the violence problems that entails, although the violence happens behind closed doors so it takes time before you realize it is there. People get paid to beat other people up. It's a beautiful but horrible place to live. It is best to only visit it. To help you appreciate what an unhappy place it is, there is an urban legend that says don't come to Évora if you don't want to get stuck there. That's how its own inhabitants feel, stuck.

It's true that this place doesn't ever really get cold, the worst is near 0 °C (freezing point) in the winter, it rarely goes below that. However, don't rely too much on meteorological data to appreciate how cold it gets. Given that summer is very hot and long, dwellings are built for that climate, with single glazed windows, no isolation and no built-in heating, so in winter, when it gets cold and very humid, it gets really uncomfortable inside. That paired with the fact that electricity costs an arm and a leg in Portugal means that most people don't heat their houses and spend their days in a winter coat inside, some even wearing gloves. It's not so much that it gets cold but it is extremely humid. I didn't want to believe it after arriving here in the summer. People kept telling me how cold it gets and I laughed my butt off, given that I'm from the east coast of Canada. But yep, they were right. It's not that it IS cold, it's that you experience it as really cold. Imagine cooking and eating in your winter coat. Imagine what it feels like to take a shower in that cold.
