It's an industry where business is booming and cruise ships on the Great Lakes are showing no signs of slowing down.

They need to start adding a stop at Cedar Point Amusement Park and Resort via the Sandusky ports. That combined with the Detroit casinos on a single cruise would draw people from other Great Lakes stops and cities and all over the World.

That would be cool! Hopefully more cruises will bring the prices down too.
@vamoscruceros9 күн бұрын
That would actually be a really interesting concept. A ship the size of Viking Octantis/Polaris could probably hold about 600 passengers maximum. A call to Cedar Point could be used to make up for the relative lack of onboard amenities. That probably wouldn't be of interest to Viking's clientele, but one could target families from outside the US looking to vacation at multiple destinations in the US.

This is really great!! Back in the early 1900's there were alot of cruise ships on our Great Lakes. It needs to come back!

That changed when flying became so popular.

these ships run on fossils. They should NOT be on our beautiful lakes!

Viking Expedition Ships are actually research ships as well as "Cruise". Do your research
@madday958912 күн бұрын
Nowadays they don’t have to cause more pollution than people flying/driving out to other vacation destinations would

They need the money, they don't care about pollution or congestion. Poor locals.😮

How many local cities built a terminal for the cruise ships with taxpayer money? Thats how it worked in Washington and Alaska. Build us a multi million dollar terminal or we wont bring our cruise ship to your town. The cruise lines should build their own docks.
@vamoscruceros9 күн бұрын
The ports collect a tax based on the number of passengers during each ship's visit, and some ports also charge a fee based on the size of the ship. Those are used to fund the cost and operation of the terminal. This typically runs around $12.50 per passenger and around $0.40 per gross ton. Great Lakes ports may be higher since the ships are so small. Ports tend to be publicly owned since they are typically used by multiple cruise lines. Larger ports may have dedicated terminals for individual lines, but a ship might use another line's terminal if unforseen circumstances arise (like a medical disembarkation). Being a homeport is where the money typically is for cities as a large percentage of guests will stay in a hotel the night before.

Those cities need income. They are quite depressed!

How unfortunate for the lakes
@jonathanellsworth2111 күн бұрын
It’s needed. One of the big industries of the Lakes was coal shipping. The cruise ships are an absolute lifeline for many ports that otherwise would get abandoned.

Ships can't legally discharge in the Great Lakes.
@MB-uy5kh13 күн бұрын
@@vamoscrucerosThey can’t legally discharge anywhere, but they do. Look up the number of fines the major cruise lines have had to pay
@vamoscruceros12 күн бұрын
@@MB-uy5kh You need to substantiate your claim with evidence. Major cruise lines (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC and their subsidiaries) can't sail the Great Lakes, their ships are too wide and/or too long. Viking (who only recently went public) is the largest line sailing the Great Lakes. Even Friends of the Earth gives Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris (the only two ships in Viking's fleet that can transit the St. Lawrence) grades of "C" for sewage treatment.

@@vamoscruceros They don't discharge in the Great Lakes. Google "Vessels, Marinas and Ports NDZs by state" to see the page from the EPA.
