Expectations vs. Reality: Having a Dog | Ariel Hamilton

In today’s video I share some expectations and realities of having a dog! Furry friends are awesome, but let’s be real. A lot of the time they don’t quite live up to our fantasies… That doesn’t mean we love them any less though, right??? I seriously adore my little Samson (if I haven’t made that obvious enough in all of my videos, haha).
HUGE props to Samson for actually cooperating in most of this video-anyone looking for a dog actor? ;) - and thanks to my friend Bri for dropping by during her lunch break to get harassed by Samson.

FYI dogs normally don't like to be hugged because they think your trying to dominate them especially ones that have pride. There are different ways to cuddle with a dog without hugging them and if you really want to try doing it during the winter when it's actually cold since by instinct they would naturally seek warmth from practically anything especially if its another animal or person.

Also if you want to buy toys next time first try to find out what kind of things your dogs like because just because he or she is a dog doesn't automatically mean that they like every toy they see.

You shouldn't hold your dog on your lap while driving anyway. If you crash then your dog will get hurt more than you. He isn't wearing a seatbelt. The airbag will help a bit but he may break a leg if he hit the airbag. I recommend buying a dog seatbelt or car bed and putting him in the back.

Exactly what I was thinking. I see people with dog seated in the front of vehicles and am sure they don't think about it. If there is a serious accident the dog will be a projectile if not properly secured.

Our "lap dog" is actually less cuddly and people-orientated than our crazy field-bred cocker spaniel! It's insane.

Small dogs are really clever which tends to make them a lot more harder to handle than most dogs. They can easily take over your entire house and life if your not careful. They may look cute and cuddly but trust me when I say this they are equally as strong as other dogs and mess with one of them you might end up having a hole in your hand

The fact that you were actually able to keep your dog in place while you took a photo of him is amazing. Whenever my puppy's is doing something adorable, I try my best to quietly take out my phone without disturbing her, but as soon as she sees the phone, she comes towards me or starts doing something entirely different

I think every dog is different. My dog follows me around everywhere. If I quietly wake up in the middle of the night and sneak into the restroom she'll inexplicably wake up too, but she'll sleep straight through me watching a movie on surround sound. Also, whenever I click my tongue, my dog just freezes, whcih makes taking pics pretty easy. Also my dog likes to cuddle, but she won't stop licking my face. =\ She's also really calm unless I'm playing with her, so long as I'm in her sights, so getting along with guests is pretty easy. She also instantly falls asleep whenever I put her in the car so long as I have the seat warmers on. The teaching her tricks thing is spot on though, haha. One other expectation vs. reality thing for me was taking baths. I didn't realize dogs hated baths that much, especially dogs that are suppose to love water, like labs. Btw, I loved your life hacks for dog owners video!

Oh my gosh the scene with you guys cuddling was the cutest thing ever. Whenever anyone in my family falls asleep on the couch, my dog just doesn't get the hint and jumps on them and starts licking their face, with the exception of when she is suuuuuppperr tired after having played for hours.

Whenever we take my dog on car rides, she always just walks around the entire time, and the person in the passengers seat usually has to physically restrain her from crawling on the lap of the driver to stand up and look out the window. And whenever the car starts beeping because it's backing up, she goes straight to the drivers seat and starts freaking out and barking like crazy

Omg!!! You are so funny and this video is a gift. I adopted a rescue puppy about a month ago and she won't cuddle, didn't care too much for petting or laying with me, and she's everything you mentioned in the beginning. I was thinking she didn't like me so I should give her to another home. But now I'm finding out she may not be the cuddle monster that I dreamed of but she shows love and trust by following me and sleeping near my feet, wanting to play and walk and belly rubs. So ding dang...I think the message for me is to find a human for cuddles. 😂 It's a weird thing when you get a dog and your expectations are drowned. Like people..we need to learn each other's language. Anyway sorry..fab video and adorable dog!

i loved that video and you dog is really cute but don´t you have a box or a belt for your dog in the car? In Germany (where i come from) it is a law, that dogs have to be "stored" properly while driving, because if you crash something your dog will fly around in the car and can get hurt badly. I know how nice it is to have the dog sitting on the lap while driving, but its dangerous, so please get your dog a belt or a box =)

when anyone comes to my house, my pug is like a toddler even though she's 7yrs old. She'll pick up anything off the floor she finds, a shoe, sock, pencil, her bone etc. and she'll go up to that person and bark as if to say, Look what I got, like a toddler does when they want attention from the visitor.
