It was explained during the Defense Against the Dark Arts class scene led by Snape that an animagus is capable of transforming themselves into a certain animal at any time (like Professor McGonagall can transform into a cat) while a werewolf has no choice about when they transform - only in the light of a full moon. Sirius Black is an animagus and learned the ability to transform into a dog. The books explain that Sirius, James Potter, and Peter Pettigrew learned their abilities in order to help their friend Remus Lupin during the periods he was a werewolf, and that they would spend that time hidden away in the Shreaking Shack, thus giving it its reputation. Sadly it was never explained in the films that these four friends were also the original Marauders who created the Marauder's Map (which is why Lupin knew exactly what it was when he encountered Snape and Harry in the corridor). Their nicknames were based on their animal forms; Moony (Lupin - for the Full Moon), Wormtail (Pettigrew - for the rats tail), Padfoot (Sirius - for the dog's feet), and Prongs (James Potter - the his stag's antlers).

So far I haven't seen the comment, so here I go: Dumbledore knew about Remus' condition already back when he was a student at Hogwarts. So he commissioned a cabin where Remus could retreat to during the full moon phases. Peter, James and Sirius decided to learn to become animagus so they could assist and help their friend during these difficult times. Since being a werewolf - especially when you are chained up and can't let go of the rage - is something very painful, Remus was constantly howling and "shrieking" .... hence why the cabin became known as the Shrieking Shack, the most haunted house of Britain ...

This is my favorite movie of the series. There was a major detail from the book that was left out in the film. Lupin, James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew were all friends since their first year at Hogwartz. Lupin at somepoint became a werewolf. In order to keep their friend company, Sirius, James, and peter learned to be an animagus, and had the ability to change into their respected animal forms. Sirius was a dog, James was a Stagg, and Peter was a rat. They made the Mauraders map to be able to find eachother, especially Lupin. The names of the map creators are their nicknames: Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot & Prongs.

Always loved how Harry's dad and Sirius Black became animagi (A stag and a huge black dog) because their best friend, Lupin, was infected with lycanthropy so they became beasts to help Lupin when he turned into a werewolf. Apparently it's difficult to learn to be an animagus -- they were truly great friends. And then... Because they had to take Lupin somewhere safe during his werewolf episodes, the group of friends + Peter Pettigrew (a rat animagus) created for themselves an infallible system to know where everyone was on the nights they needed to turn furry and help Lupin...so they created the Marauder's Map. We see proof of this at the top of the map where it says it was created by Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs : Mooney - aka: Lupin, because he's a werewolf Wormtail - aka: Peter Pettigrew because he is a rat Padfoot - aka: Sirius Black because he is the giant black dog (which is cool because Sirius in real life is the name of the star in the night sky which is also known as "the dog star") And Prongs -- aka: James Potter because he is a stag with huge antlers. And it's doubly interesting because his son Harry's patronus takes the form of a stag as well...which is beautiful because " patronus is from the Latin "Pater" which means "father". 😇

1:02:21 the Stag IS the shape of Harry’s patronis, it’s because that is his happy memory: his parents. One cool reveal in the movie is that James, Sirius, Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were friends in school. But it doesn’t explain that they also created the Marauder’s Map. The names on the map-Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs-are nicknames they gave each other. Lupin’s nickname, Moony, ties to him being a werewolf. He was bitten as a child and faced bullying and isolation. But James, Sirius, and Peter became his friends and, to support him, they turned themselves into Animagi. Sirius could transform into a black dog (Padfoot), Peter into a rat (Wormtail), and James into a stag (Prongs), just like Harry’s Patronus.

When Snape "reveals" the map's secrets, it mentions four nicknames, those are the nicknames of the four mentioned above. Crazy when you realize Peter was pretending to be Scabbers the rat for 12 years!! Being around Ron's family that entire time spying and hearing all those private convos. You first seen him in the first movie. So he's been around Harry too going on three years of school. Something they didn't dive into in this movie that was in the book is that Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter pettigrew, and James Potter were all able to turn into animals illegally.. they were once four best friends going to Hogwarts together. And the other friends didn't want Lupin to be alone dealing with his changes so they learned how to turn into animals to be able to spend time with him during those times. They were also the 4 creators/founders of the marauders map... So Lupin pretended to not know what the map was during the scene with Snape when he tried to confiscate the map in school and covered for Harry knowing damn well that he's part of the reason that it exist lmao. Mooney was Lupin's nickname because of the werewolf aspect. Wormtail was Peter pettigrew as he could turn into a rat and and their tails are worm-like. Sirius was Padfoot because as a dog he had padded feet (there is also a mythical creature of the British isles known as the Padfoot, giant dog creature, which like the grim was an omen of death) & prongs was James Potter because he could turn into a stag deer with the antlers. Harry's patronus dementor spell also takes the shape of the stag which you saw at the lake when Harry saved himself.

Sirius is as rich as the Malfoy family, he doesn't need to work. You'll meet more members of the Black family later in the series but not Ron's grandmother (also a Black). There are 2 forms of patronus: the shield type and the more difficult corporial type which takes the form of an animal. Harry's dad was an animagus and took the form of a stag. James Potter and school friends were the Marauders which is why Lupin could operate the map! Note: there is a member of the Black family currently at Hogwarts (via his mother). Cedric Diggery of Hufflepuff caught the snitch and won the quiditch match.

Exactly! And tbh the misunderstood thing doesn't really show until like the last 2 movies in my opinion. But earlier movies people have every right to hate draco, because like you said he's a bully and a complete jerk to Harry, Ron and Hermione

"The Easter Island Ruins" you mentioned (yes, I knew what you meant, similar) are circles used by pagans in ancient times. They play a huge role in the Starz series "Outlander". They have a few of them still standing in Scotland. Hogwarts is in Scotland so it's nice they included them on this set. Another of it's type is Stonehenge. Hermione knew the immobulus spell, she used it on the pixies in Chamber of Secrets. She must've thought it wouldn't work on the whomping willow.

Or just she didn't know it would work on the Whomping Willow. She knows many things, but not everything.😊

I thought the Easter Island markers were giant heads with small bodies...anthropomorphic statuary...which stand in a great long line on the beach facing the sea on Easter Island. Their purpose is more mysterious. Stone circles made of megalyths and/or tryptics of giant stones (like at Avebury or Stonehenge) were used by early human civilizations as a means to keep track of seasons through monitoring the solstices and both equinoxes, etc., during which times they frequently had celebrations (celebrating the longest day of summer, or celebrating the longest night because after that night each day would grow longer. These are sensible things for primitive societies to celebrate. The word "pagan" gives a lot of people. all sorts of negative notions about these things. Things which were really an ancient blend of early astronomy, timekeeping, tracking.the seasons, etc., with some unknown amount of spirituality sprinkled in.

@@--ArcAngel-- Easter Island are heads looking out to sea. Most ancient societies have some type of large statuary or even the geoglyphs in South America. Man making sense of their world.

If you guys want some extra homework, theres a fan fiction audiobook on youtube called "the muraders plan" where Harry ends up taking his place as Lord Potter head of the ancient and noble house of Potter and his seat in the wizard house of Lords. Its a different timeline that starts at the end of this movie.

Not sure if anybody's commented this yet (still on the process of watching, lol) but Sirius is NOT a werewolf, he's an Animagus. They're the ones that can turn into animals at will, it's why Sirius is a normal dog while Lupin is a full-on beast. Sirius could control himself and his transformations, Lupin could not. :)

This movie is what got me hooked on the Potter universe. After seeing this the first time I immediately read the books that were available at the time. I’ve read the whole series multiple times. I’m so glad you are getting into this.

The original Dumbledore was played by Richard Harris, Sir Michael Gambon picked up the role after his passing. Both wonderful actors.

This my favourite movie of the franchise. It has the serious tones while still remaining fun. This is also where the acting becomes a little stronger as the cast gets older

I enjoyed this reaction so much lol. Also I'm not sure if you noticed yet but one theme that has been consistent since the first movie is that the defense against the dark arts class teaching job is cursed 😂 noone who accepts that job ever keeps that job longer than a movie. There has been a different teacher for that class all three movies so far lmao Professor Quirrel in the first movie(the one who wore a turbin & had Voldemorts face in the back of his head) gilderoy Lockhart in the second one (the fraud who was famous for taking credit for things he didn't really do and got his memory wiped) and now in this third movie Lupin had to resign cuz of being exposed as a werewolf. The funny thing is Snape always wanted to teach that class but ended up being the potions teacher instead lol. Looking forward to you reacting to the rest of the HP movies!! Thank you!!

Such a well written instalment of the series. The storyline was so complex but they tied it together so neatly and made it work. Hope you enjoyed the first adultish movie in the series, and it's going to keep going in that direction, we've only scratched the surface! Can't wait to see your smiling faces again!

38:41 Remember what Lupin said about Dementors. They consume happiness and positivity as nourishment, leaving their victims a tried to husk with nothing but their worst experiences. The only reason that they serve as the guards of Azkaban is because it is mutually beneficial. The Dementors are given a supply of humans that are considered undesirable to society, and for the wizard population, the Dementors are mostly confined to a single location to ensure that they are not running wild.
