Khatanga is a town located in the very North of the Krasnoyarsk region, and it is one of the main bases in the Russian Arctic. There’s a seaport on the Khatanga river which flows into the Laptev sea, and only this port has vessels capable of passing through the most difficult areas of the Arctic Ocean. Also, Khatanga is about to become a base for the flights to the North Pole. It's time to clean up this town and its coast from the Soviet 'heritage'!

This place reminds me of the Kakhovka Dam region near Kherson. It used to be a beautiful place of fertile farmland. Then the Russians showed up, blew up the dam, destroyed the the villages, and poisoned the countryside. Now it looks just like this (the garbage pile I mean), except way more corpses.

@@jrmc732 Don't worry, that garbage didn't go anywhere. The video is purely soft propaganda paid for by the Kremlin. These people are paid to make propaganda. They did not fly in a jet thousands of miles to pick up some random bits of metal and glass. Obviously Shoigu is not paying for that. The whole thing is a show to soften western minds.

Really beautiful and amazing. I had been to ex USSR from 1975 till 1982 to take training in Maritime Navigation. A Navigation Cadet Officer in Murmansk High Marine Engineering School which is Murmansk State Technical University now, I had opportunity to spend 2 months in a remote Arctic place called Tuba Guba. The Russian Geographic Society and all the people involved in this are doing such work, not only does it benefit them to have soil samples etc, but it helps the community in the Russian Artic, environmentally but also economically. You think the Russian MOD is going to send a precious transport plane thousands of KM up to the artic with a tiny party to pick up scraps of glass and metal when all those tons of garbage have been ignored for decades and that this isn't just a publicity stunt/soft propaganda? Russia does not give a damn about that garbage obviously. It's plainly soft propaganda aimed at gullible westerners. RGS is another propaganda instrument of the Kremlin, under Shoigu.

What a beautiful surprise today, to find this new video, about Khatanga. I'd been there almost 30 years ago, in April 1994 during an expedition to the North Pole we made a stop by in Khatanga for a few days. We also flew the IL76 cargo plane, also a AN72, AN28 and some Mil8 Helicopters. It definitely looks very different now in the summer, it was still completely frozen. It was the year before they discovered that big mammouth. I still have a beautiful memory of the people in Khatanga. Both Russians and the Chutki (eskimo people), as well as the dogs, lot of them and very friendly. I also agree about the weird feeling due to the full day sunlight. I didn't sleep for three days. The port on the river was completely frozen and some ships were stuck in the ice, only a couple of them were active (sort of military radio equipped vessels). We didn't have any issues with the polar bears, however we'd been told that a few weeks earlier there had been an accident nearby the airport. There were also some deers around; the Chutki were running some herds and once we flew the helicopters to jump nearby a Chutki village with a lot of deers. That was one of the most memorable experiences of the trip in the area. Very friendly and nice people. On the way back from the North Pole, when we stopped by at a small island in the arctic ocean (Sretnj Island) together with a canadian friend we decided for a small walk and the military gave us an AK, just in case we encountered a bear. We didn't. But in April on the frozen ocean it's not that unusual to meet some. Especially moms with cubs, or some errand hunting males. OMG... so many great memories, definitely missing that place. I'm really Happy to see that you're organizing and cleaning the Arctic, such a beautiful, fragile and important environment. It really deserves to care about. Thank You for taking care of the environment and to show this unknown beauty to the world. BTW. Polar bears are my most favorite animal, I really love them. Take care and keep doing your inspirational videos. Thank You so much.

Absolutely fascinating, great footage of some very unusual environments! The Mammoth still half locked in the ice...wow!! 💗 The landscapes of Siberia are really majestic, it's too bad that it's become so logged with old garbage here and there, but to tell the truth you could find just as run-down locations in some places in the US I think. Nearly twenty years ago, during a Russian general election - I don't remember which year it was - a Swedish journalist whom I happened to know some, and who had lived and worked in Russia for many years from the mid-90s on, flew up to the Taimyr peninsula to do some reporting and talk with local indigenous people there about the election and so on.. She must have flown over Khatanga or possibly Norilsk, she continued with a helicopter (probably leased from the army) up to the Taimyr, to seek people out in their tents and cottages on the frozen tundra.

Thank you for an informative video. It would have been nice had you showed the spot on the map. It is not Arctic Circle. The area showed vegetation. This is Tundra. You and your team are doing a fantastic job, cleaning up the beach. A tour of the town would have been interesting. I think it is called Novibrisk. From warm Karachi, Pakistan.

arctic is referid to all the northern area, not just the polar circle. vegetation still exist in the north, tundra means there are no big trees.

well, Kathanga seats in the Arctic circle. It's at the base of the Taymyr peninsula and I remember the last trees were across the river, south of us. Northern of us it was just thundra and the Arctic Ocean. The Khatanga river ends into the Laptev sea on the North West, while across the Taymyr peninsula, on the East the Kara sea and Novaya Zemlya, one of the northest islands in the Arctic Ocean. I'd been really impressed seeing the beautiful and thriving landscape in its fulness, which only happens in July and August.

@@jackieow Taymyr Peninsula is pretty well known, just basic geography. ⁦71°57'51"N⁩ ⁦102°26'32"E⁩ Searching is the fun part.

Maybe well known to people with names like Pavel or Cyril or Igor. Not well known outside Russia. Instead of 569,000 subscribers looking it up, it is easier to specify basic information, such as geographical locations. Searching is the fun part if you have nothing to do and time to waste.@@pavel5939

If you check out Grytviken on South Georgia, you will see what you can achieve on what was an old abandoned whaling station. It looks totally returned to nature now.

Very good idea to clean up. Russia always to me shows some existential truth in full clarity. Like films of Tarkowski. Though it´s sad, there is hope and beauty. And it´s human. Great video. Thank you. Mammoth reminds me of an excellent museum in Perm with a mammoth baby ...

Thank you, Eli, for bringing this project to the attention of many, and the Society for the initiative to lead the mixed experience group to the awareness of the need to comee together. We are all people who are an integral part of the planet same as any other creature, vegetation and the elements. The deeper these ideas of oneness and affinity with our sorroundings become instilled in our active consciousness, the better the outcome of our actions with respect to improvement of total acceptance as contributing humans on Earth.

Dear Eli, I have seen many of your videos... and kind of followed you around.. even when you came back and did not really know what now... I know the feeling.... BUT NOW I think you have found somewhat your way forward... have a purpose again... I LIKE THIS VIDEO A LOT... its so genuine... honest... and lovely... ... and then its about an area of Russia I would like to visit.... the north very north... .... connecting us to the vastness of Earth, and where life has not changed all that much .... ((((am exploring all about early man DK Russia and China... next year plan to visit Novosibirsk Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography and learn hands on about what they do to find dig up and preserve the past)))) But in Russia so unique the past and the now is alive at the same time... I look forward to see more of these kind of videos like this one... GLAD you look happy again ml bente

If you happen to go to St. Petersburg I would kindly suggest you to visit the Polar Museum. It has plenty of historic artifacts from polar expeditions since the early years of the 1900. It was run by some friends, a group of former soviet scientists and explorers, who had been working in Antarctica and in the Arctic all their lives, really great guys. One of them, Valery, had been the commanding officer of the last of the floating Ice Drifting Station (maybe #31), lasting more than 36 months, drifting in the arctic ocean. We had a small breakfast together in a private room, under the thorn/ripped flag once waving on the station, and some tears drop out of his eyes. It definitely worths a visit.
