You should seriously look in to putting a automotive fan on the front of your engine to move the air around, I did it on my boat and it worked great. Also they do make fans for the alternator that fit just behind the belt pulley.

Hi guys, love your show. Just a little guidance for using an IR thermometer. They all measure an average temperature of a circular area having a diameter of generally 1/10 or 1/12 the distance held away from the surface of interest. That is, if you hold it 4 feet away, you are averaging a temperature of 4”-6” diameter area of engine, not just the alternator. To capture the alternator temperature, you need to be 6” to 12” away from your target. FYI.

You should view captain Rick Moore's experience with alternators and a 48 volt system. He is able to fully electrify all boat systems. He is very knowledgeable on matters electrical on boats. He uses a combination of two alternators and extensive solar panels and a wind generator. Exploiting the reduced current of a 48 volt system vs lower voltages (study ohm's law), heat production is greatly reduced. He is able to install a mini-split ac system with the increased available power.

i see you know about shrink wrap.. consider soldering smaller connectors along with the squeeze trick (ie: dip a hot gob of solder inside the connector with the wire in place and squeeze while it is hot.. reheat the connector with a small iron to ensure a good bond) .. then.. slide an appropriate sized shrink wrap over the whole lot.. find yourself connectors without that preinstalled shrink wrap as it will only get in the way.. given your salty environment.. electrical connections will always be a weak link as salt can; and does, make currents go off in unexpected and not so wonderful directions.. probably not going do more than give your installs a fighting chance tbh.. but i hope it helps.. Much love and Thanks so much for sharing

Do you have a fresh air input/exhaust vents in the engine compartment. If so, can you connect a hose to the exhaust vent and put the other end by the alternator, with a small fan to pull the hot air into the vent tube? If you just put a fan blowing on the alternator it is just going to heat up the engine compartment and eventually shut down the alternator and regulator. I you do not have a fresh air vent system in the compartment you may want to add one.

Really interesting project! It’s a pain when you feel you’re just wasting fuel and making noise by using a regular alternator and having the engine at 1300 rpm and almost no charging. With a decent converter to get 110 V, you can now get really rid of the generator, it’s maintenance and everything. Ventilating better than engine bay will be now important, for the alternator, and also the belt which will have more drag. A good point to know now is the higher safest current to inject to the batteries in order to extend their life as much as possible, so you can tune the new charging system to that Well done!

My "final home" design includes solar power, wind power, solar hot water, and a thermal battery. The goal is to always maintain at least a 30% surplus of energy. Going for a short, sunlit walk when you're sick is just about the best think you can do. Not only do you get the best form of Vitamin D, ever, but you get a bit of exercise, as well. Nothing but bedrest when you're sick is Yes, sugar counteracts getting well! Stick to the good stuff, like chicken noodle soup, celery, carrots, broccoli, beef, fish, leafy green vegetables... The lack of your dogs' excitement is hillarious. Whenever a new product comes with new wires, and they're the same as the old ones, never use the old ones! Always use the new ones! Reason: Wires in areas of vibration can and do wear out. Zeus sounds cool!

Fresh water Rinse layup and Emergency Bilge Pump. On Starlight 1989 Beneteau Oceanis 350 has a Volvo Penta engine M2003 28hp anyway I was the second owner, so after I purchased the boat I was doing the shakedown cruise and ran the engine for about an hour and the overheated alarm went off , could not find a problem, cutting too the chase lots of growth and calcification of the tubes in the heat exchanger. Had too take the entire unit clean it and put it back, never wanted to do that again figured was not the use rather the extended, layup with saltwater, also the corrosion factor of the elbow, had to replace that. So as a solution I cam up with this manifold I constructed with brass and bronze fittings and ball valves for each connection, from the thru hull , to the manifold, ball on the thru hull and on the manifold did the same at the on end valve to the sea strainer to the engine, next thru hull, pressure fresh water, and at the other end again valve to a run to the bilge. This allows me to turn on the fresh water, backwash the thru hull, then shutoff and run the engine for 2 minutes on fresh water before shutting down the engine for the night or an extended time. It also in the final configuration allows me to bring to bear as an emergency pump, on my main bilge the engine, if there is a major leak in the boat that bilge pumps cannot handle for whatever reason, (lightning strikes) etc. I often use the fresh water system when she is on the hard, and I need to run the engine, like changing oil, etc. I have 100 gallons of water on Starlight, you should see the looks I get in the yard with no hose, on the hard, yet engine running and water from the exhaust and prop shaft running out. In 20 years have not had any overheating issues or had to deal with the heat exchanger or the elbow, which is notorious on Volvos.. Note, this is an easy cheap fix, and can help you on many situations..

Hi Brett, I didn't find the alternator model in the Arc Marine website while I found the regulator. Can you tell me which model you used capable of 250a (more&less)? And in generator mode if the batteries were low how does Amperes the alternator is able to produce at idle 1.000 rpm?
@JeromeLoman8 ай бұрын
If your alternator doesn’t have isolated ground the alternator shunt on negative won’t necessarily capture all amp as some will go through engine ground.

I am excited about this new regulator. I have the WS500 and my problem with the WakeSpeed is not easy way to program and see what it’s doing over Bluetooth. I do like how integrated the WS500 with Victron’s products, including their system monitors. For example, in a multi-BMS multi-battery Lithionics setup, if one of the BMSs goes offline, the WS500 will know that and automatically adjust its charging profile accordingly. I am skeptical of ARCO's claim that they have all this and more solved on day one, and much more, when one of the smartest engineers in the business Al Thomason of WakeSpeed has a five-year lead on them??

Well, sorry, but as an electrical (electronics) engineer, and looking at what you have going on with those alternators, I would have to say an alternator mounted set of cooling fins and possibly a dedicated fan might be closer to what you will need with those high currents. But, since these are automotive products and not typically engineered by electronics engineers they dont really understand how SERIOUS you have to get about HEAT. With late model super computers they even use water cooling with fans on the inside of the microprocessor system and the outside (a fan cooled "radiator". Why am I saying this ?? That's a LOT of amps and any resistance anywhere and you produce heat. Plus, your doing all this inside of a High Temp compartment to begin with ! Asking for problems , they haven't quite worked all this out. You need a DEDICATED ALTERNATOR COOLING SYSTEM with TEMP MEASUREMENT CAPABILITY ! If you could measure the alternator temp with a readout and be able to control the number of amps its producing with a controller, that might get you through this without a FIRE. Ok, watching you test and talk about field current and play with fuses, it Sounds Like you don't have a way to measure the field current. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but during your start up process it is turning out to be important. Might I recommend a Clamp Meter , decent quality less than $100, will measure that current and much more for you. Big help with testing solar panels for instance. You just wrap the jaws around the wire and it tells you the current flowing and its direction . Sorry if you've already got one but you weren't using it on the field current as a measurement (if there is a wire to the field connection you can clamp on to. ) COOL (HOT) system but I would get yourself a BUNCH of BELTS ! And until you can cool that alternator with some sort of system, consider limiting the amps (can you limit them ?) Emily and Clark might have talked about that because Lithium IO LIPO Batteries will take unlimited amps and even they can overheat. Use that heat gun EVERYWHERE, not just on the alternator. I'd be curious, is that shunt made with nichrome
