Welcome to Expedition Evans. We bought our 2008 Beneteau 49 after it had been ran aground and deemed salvaged. Over the past several months we've been documenting our journey of grinding and sanding to rid the boat of all the bad fiberglass. We then cleaned up the mess and laid hundreds of pounds of new fiberglass and epoxy both inside and outside the boat. Not to mention re drilling keel bolt holes, rebuilding the sump box, media blasting the keel, fairing and painting the keel...there's been a lot going on. An error in almost any one of the previous steps could mean that the keel doesn't line up just right and would require some serious work to fix it.
Today we find out.
Thanks for watching-
With love

Here's what we think we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. See • We Buy a SALVAGE SAILB... for how we came to own her!

I saw last week's episode and your comments of the hate remarks you were receiving - I was shocked. I, for one, wanted to let you know that I appreciate the time and effort you put into documenting your journey and generous enough to share it with the world. To witness positive people full of optimism, an inspiring couple with obvious love and respect for each other warms my heart and reaffirms my faith that there are people that transend the toxic environment that we currently find ourselves. I admire the fearlessness both of you have in the face of the monumental task ahead. You have a fan. Best of luck and I look forward to all your future installments!

Out of everybody else in a boat right now, and there are lots of fixer sailor vids or just sailing, this is very special you have no idea how much and how far your journey will inspire young and old to reach, and just the energy that you two are exuding right now is actually a medicine in its self x.

If you encounter the paper towel shredding in the hole problem again take a smaller diameter tapered lag bolt and insert it in the hole. Move and rotate the lag bolt up and down in the hole and it should grab your paper towel and remove it. You and your lovely wife are doing a great job. Watching you work with fiberglass reminds me of my younger days repairing old corvettes. Keep having fun.

This was the culmination of countless hours, days and weeks; Really, I wasn't counting, were you? I have been anticipating and waiting for this huge day ever since you dropped the keel. This day was huge also because it symbolized the marriage of the hull with it's mate, the keel and that union signaled the beginning of the end to a giant restoration for this boat! I have built houses from the ground up; I've built a few cars from the frame up. I know and I am sharing the joy you both must have been feeling when that sculpted piece of pig-iron was hung once again from that beautiful 49 ft. hull. May you never have to tackle such a daunting challenge again and may you take great pride in your amazing accomplishment!

I am very impressed with your combined attitudes and willingness to learn each and every process that you undertook to get the boat to this stage. We live in a very questionable world. At 64 years old, I am troubled by events going on around us. You have both demonstrated that there are still young intelligent people with a thirst for what’s over the next horizon and around the next corner. As simple as that may seem to you, for me it is a huge breath of fresh air. I look forward to your continuing adventures.

I left Savannah drove to Crestview, Florida stopping 2 times to stretch my legs and check to see if the video had posted; 450 miles in 6.5 hours, finally I saw the post then put it off until I could sit and watch it all the way thru! Agreed but it is such a hard thing to control. Different laws in different countries, sadly the posters have to maintain a thick skin and dump the negative BS at the door. Suspending an account they merely move on and open another one using a VPN or some other hiding tactic. It sucks as we love that they share so much with us but it does attract the haters, despicable.

I don't mind cutting loose on the Trolls & Negative Nellies. Just ask for their "experience" in or on the subjest matter at hand? Ask what major projects they have completed to a successful conclusion? Ask them what have they actually done that was a dream/passion of theirs? What are their current dreams, hobbies, interests & projects?

Unfortunately the only first approach would be no anonymous posting. If you had to verify who you actually are and have accessible contact details before you got to post there might be some restraint shown. When I post, it is done using my real name. Some ability to report trolls, then cancellation of their posting access could be used.

It is heartening to watch you guys accomplish this. I too, am a "400' and a quarter mile inbound over the outer marker" guy. When I retired from the Army 20 years ago, we were either going to get a sailboat to wander (RYA yachtmaster's ticket from the mid 80's) or an airplane (I now own a Mooney). We picked the airplane. Being an engineer, I am smart enough to not fix what I fly and not fly what I fix. There are trained and competent people to do that. But for sailing? Every day during any rental I care to mention has me wandering about with a screwdriver and tools in my hand to fix something. Sailing is not just going where Gaia permits, it is also about looking after the boat. You folks approach this with a pilot's understanding of risks and competence required to mitigate them and with an engineer's (I am also an engineer) need to overbuild (just in case). I love watching this. I have every confidence you will do well and stay safe. At the beginning of the series, I had my doubts - perhaps biting off more than the two of you could handle - but you both know what is "safe" and what is "possible." Remember Brett, the difference between flying and sailing is that we have seconds in the air to prevent disaster (always preparing for it) but somewhat longer to do the same at sea (again always prepared for it). Our stated wishes to each other are similar ("clear skies and tailwinds" for flying versus "fair winds and following seas" for sailing). You bought yourself more boat than most folks in your circumstances would, so it will be enjoyable to watch and see how you exploit it. Not a coastal keel or twin keels, so beaching it in the shallows in the bahama's is not really an option - but Beneteaus point well and will haul closer to the wind than many other designs so you will have more options for passages. No skeg, so the rudder will obviously need protecting. I know you have not finished the refit. There are spaces to clean up belowdecks, mechanical systems to check out, electrical and electronic systems to either overhaul or install and a whole host of things to do. We (my wife and I) will enjoy watching you two travel our "road not taken." Fair winds and following seas to you. We know you are in good hands with each other.

Well what can one say,,,all the hard work is now paying off, it has to be a great feeling reaching this mile stone, (one of many to come,) great job. Watching that keel going on was amazing to me, but the look on Jades face and watching her vibrating, jumping around and especially that beautiful smile says it all. On another subject and a very important one!!! Bret and Jade, l know your in a rush to get things done,,, but ALWAYS PROTECT YOUR EYES when using rotating equipment, ie; grinders, drilling and especially wire wheels (enough said). Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations. You have tackled a rebuild job that very few people would even consider undertaking and you have done a fantastic job--both of you. I was a bit skeptical about all of those holes in the hull matching the bolts in the keel, but how can you not appreciate a perfect fit. Again, great job! I have no doubt that the remainder of the refit will go just as well and I look forward to watching.

Great job! Just a tip, before sandblasting anything but a dab of grease on threaded areas. Also never underestimate how much garbage that shop vac can suck out of places like that. Also, one more thing, is lithium grease spread lightly all over does a great job and never allowing rust to return, and repels water like a champ. Hope this helps. You guys are so brave and devoted. Keep safe.

Scuba tank with old first stage makes great portable air. Just use low pressure side only. Works great and long time. A must to have. Wear your safety glasses or you will wished you had for the rest of your life. Great progress well done. Glad for you two.

I was thinking, where is my Evan’s fix it’s Friday night😱. You can get Air in a Can at Office works or stationary place they use it for cleaning keyboards and computer boards. While your still at dock go see the workshop and get a couple of lengths of 316SS welding wire. Hands for getting dropped things and holding bits together.. love watching you guys work. It’s better than me doing it🤣🤣🤣

CONGRATULATIONS!! What an achievement! I'm slowly restoring my equilibrium after watching those keel bolts align so perfectly with the holes in the hull! 😁🤣 After that operation everything else should feel like a doddle!! I have a suggestion for getting crud out of bolt holes or any similar hole for that matter: stick any absorbent ( for example could be that aerated and compressible foam material used in packing or just cut up an old kitchen sponge) material and stick to the end of a screwdriver, forming a 'blob' that you can then saturate with anything sticky such as honey or sugar water and of course just stick it into the said hole. I think that should be quite a practical way to clean up any hole. That's my helpful tip of the week! Onwards and upwards, I look forward to the next episode! Cheers! 😁😂🤣😄
