With Brett off to his other work, it's boat building with Jade again. Except this time, it's not so much building as it is removing some of our hard work. When we laid the glass we intentionally glassed over the bolt holes where the keel bolts through the hull and grid. This allowed us to have one continuous bond of new glass where it matters the most!

Here's what we think we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. See • We Buy a SALVAGE SAILB... for how we came to own her!

If you are 2-3 times my age with the equivalent of added experience, please think before you criticize me for learning and gaining my own experience. I'm here. I'm doing it. I'm fixing this boat and learning a lot and creating these videos for you guys. Stop raining on my parade. Suggestions and ideas are totally welcome and can hopefully be a resource for others who watch these videos. And a note on misogyny: this is my boat and my project just as much as it is Brett's.

Ignore the haters. I love that you're willing to film authentically -- the mistakes, the lack of experience, and everything. Also, the fact that you're willing to tackle projects like this on your own, figure it out and get it done despite your inexperience puts you in the 1% of women out there.

I was waiting for this to happen. Keyboard warriors do not limit themselves to politics. The Evans is also a thread on other cruiser forums. The lesson is to ignore the negative. You have much more support than the trolls. Personally, I would have NEVER done this; you did. Thank you!! I am learning about the construction of these boats. Apparently, Benneteau has had issues with its construction over the years. Parley Revival has also found construction problems with other brands of cats they are repairing, such as a void in the glass, under the gelcoat, on the bow of one of the hulls. #IGY6 BTW. The new intro is great! A FINAL note. You and others tell us what the "next steps" will be. WHERE are the "EXPERTS" with their advice? It makes more sense to suggest a way of doing a repair BEFORE you actually complete it.

I'm sorry if you think I'm raining on your parade. I believe you are doing an awesome job. I've learned a few things from you, watching you guys work! I am twice your age, and would have loved to help you guys doing this project. I can figure out how to do anything. In my years I've figured out asking people for advice on how they would do something is sometimes better than my idea. Having said that, I just want to see you guys succeed! My unsolicited advice wasn't just for you, it was also for other fans of yours (like me) who might find themselves in the same position. I'm sorry! I'm certainly not criticizing you! I still believe a templet will help you. Smile, don't take advise as a personal! It certainly wasn't meant to offend!

I am old enough to be your father served a 4 year apprenticeship, I was an engineer and came across your channel randomly. You and your husband are doing a great job. I do cringe now and then BUT so did my elders when I was learning the ropes. You will know your boat inside out when finished and that will help so much when the the "stuff"hits the fan at sea.

Ya. It’s like watching home alone and wanting to give advice,,,, from the school of hard knocks...to be a journeyman, you have to make those 1001 mistakes that school does not teach you... gotta love the journey...

I spent 3 weeks making a 1 inch steel cube fit through a 1 inch hole in half inch steel using only hand tools. That taught me that everything that works with electricity is wonderful. I could think of better things to learn in my apprenticeship but I got paid just the same.

@@philgray1023 we did a stint in every other apprenticeships training. At 16 you wonder why. Later in life it served me well.. You could always find some work with your training.

@@philgray1023 Aaaaaaaaagh! You too 😁 My first day, same as you, took me about the same time as you. I thought it was just 'cause the plant manager was a sadist. Two years later was slightly different - Came out of the blue, no warning. 2" roundstock, make 1" cube, tolerance +0/ -0.00025 in all dimensions, lapped to bright finish, no visible toolmarks - Also hand tools only - 2.5 days max time limit. While he inspected the second one, the boss told me it had value for both him and for me; For him to have confirmed that I could do it within the time as well as to a set standard....For me to realise how far I'd come and to take pride in my achievement. He was a superb psychologist, I left work that night feeling like an adult, maybe for the first time, hungry for more knowledge to allow me to do better. It felt so good, I'll never forget it and I revered that man from that day on.

I used to commission brand new yachts coming from a highly reputable yacht manufacturing business. I can assure you the bolt holes drilled here are just as good as what they produced from the factory. In fact I saw many instances of way worse. For the haters you don’t know what you are talking about. The function is simple drill a hole bigger than the bolt. Push the keel up so the bolt fits through the hole. Glue. Attach a plate & nut. Job done. Go sailing. Stop being know it’s all’s.

I read of a top production boat maker where the holes drilled for the backstay chainplates didn't match up with internal backing pads, but they bolted the backstays on anyway. There are boats out there on the high seas with certification where that is what they have. The Evans know exactly how theirs is put together.

It is close to 50 years ago that I was in your shoes and learning how to do things. Anyone that criticizes you for not having experience has yet to walk that path. You are doing a wonderful job.

I think this is one of the best of your videos. Jade you are fearless energetic and charming all at the same time. I love the technicalities that I see in your work but it wouldn’t be the same without you. You’re doing a great job just ignore anybody who rains on your parade.

Great job Jade, as a guy I will say this, If my wife had to do that job it would probably not have gotten done. Well maybe she could have but I don't think she would have been done before I got back to help her. This type of problem solving is needed when working this type of project. My wife is good at numbers and organizations, you seem to have it all. Keep getting it done and don't give up. You go girl.

You are wonderful. The vast majority of your audience are supporting this adventure and it has become our adventure. Keep going and ignore those who want something different. I think most people don’t understand they are not viewing in real time and you cannot always take advice on things that have already happened. They probably don’t understand the amount of time it takes to set up a shot, repeat it multiple times and edit the footage, the latter about an hour per minute. You are also creating your own history and memories.that your families can view in the future. COVID is oppressive and depressing so keep going, For the audience, this boat has already launched so most of the advice is surplus to requirements. Just remember you are amazing!!

My husband and I love your channel! We watch it together every night before bed. We both find it inspiring. We're sad that we have almost caught up to the present, and then we will have to wait a whole week for a new episode (HaHa). You've pulled us right into your story. On a personal note, I find you Jade to be a great example. You are so brave! As women we need more examples like that. Keep being you. I think people write hateful comments strictly because they're jealous. You're living the life they wish they could. It makes me think of a great quote by Theodore Roosevelt, “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. Jade you are sooooooo adorable. I’m a truck driver and my wife often has to take care of things that I normally would do. So I absolutely understand what your going through. Not having looked at any comments as yet, I’m just wondering exactly how many people will be giving you advice on how to drill holes through the hull of a boat ?! Methinks you did a fab job and also that you discussed this operation with the skipper before he left ......but well done for dealing with all the unplanned “hiccups “ such as busted dremmel! Great to be able to check the drilled out “plugs” to see how good your repair work was !😊👍

People don't understand being young, learning new things and problem solving 🤷 sure they could do it better but they are twice my age with 5 times the experience, yet they criticize me for being in the process of gaining my own experiences. Everyone has to learn somewhere, but yeah, this comment section can be very exhausting

@@ExpeditionEvans I gotta say, age has nothing to do with it. It's attitude. People somehow think that with age comes great wisdom. With age comes some wisdom but because our environment around us is always evolving, that wisdom has a shelf life in many areas. Sometimes you pick up a few things along the way, but I see every day as an instructor that older people THINK they know everything instead of approaching things with a learning attitude. Keep up your attitude and you will go further than most people. Ignore the rocking chair critics, even if they are well meaning. Chin up the both of you and I will see you out on the water in the next few years. Capt. P

@@ExpeditionEvans Don't listen to people like that. What frustrates me is people (men and women) who think they can't or that they shouldn't use a tool because they haven't before. You dove right in, figured out what you needed to do and got the job done. Mistakes are part of the process and learning is fun. Enjoy the process.

@@ExpeditionEvans I don't know if there are many negative comments but I just read through about a 100 and haven't found one. This tells me you did a great job and with anything new it takes time to get better at it. People who complain either haven't done a refit on a boat or they are professional and we didn't get to see their mistakes; I have been working on a boat for the last 3 years, let me tell you there are lots of mistakes. You are doing awesome, and both of you are some of the hardest workers that I have seen on a sailing channel.

If you need to use a hole saw on a hole that has already been drilled out, sometimes you can use a smaller hole saw that fits the inner hole, and stack it up with the correct size one. Depends on the hole saw arbor and if it can hold two at once.

You can also drill a hole with the correct sized hole saw into a fairly thick piece of wood, center that over where you need to drill and use it as a drill guide.

Or get a wooden tapered being, fire into hole. Drill with correct sized hole saw.

Stuck at home in Norway with a sinus infection I have just "binge watched" all your movies. Looking at the starting point (a badly grounded and "fixed" boat...) and the huge job you have managed to do (learning along the way) is simply impressive, so just ignore any negative comments and remember what the surveyor said after inspecting your work. That is what counts, and overkill is great when you hit really bad weather one day...! I am a 56 year old sailboat racing/cruising techie, grew up in saltwater and boats, have crossed many oceans and have done several similar projects (although not as extensive as this!). If I hadn't also started 30-35 years ago like you two have done, I wouldn't have the tech experience and skills I have today. And for those who comments about this man/woman stuff, GROW UP! I once took apart half my car engine because it was running rough, just to hear my wife ask if there was gas in the tank... and I will not tell you about my first fibreglass job, but it was hot! So proud of you both!!!

What helped us a lot when thinking about abrasive methods and epoxy, treat it as a soft metal. Something between hard wood and soft mild steel. Metal tools are golden but the glass will wear anything out. Wood tools where they make a nice cut on wood usually never do on epoxy. When we did a lot of thru deck holes, we used a lot of stepped drill bits, makes a nice chamfer on the holes too. You have done a stellar job!

This worked for some of the holes, but we glassed over the ones near the sump box when we repaired the delam from the keel drop fiasco - so it was sandwiched!

I am real proud of you both. It is often hard to work with your spouse on a project without getting in each other's face. You are doing extremely well. Keep up the good work. Brent and Jade, I came across your channel the other day and got myself caught up. I thoroughly enjoyed this video of Jade drilling the holes through the hull. Although that is not the way I would have done it I was very impressed with Jades figuring out process to achieve the results that she wanted--no crying, just try something else until success. No matter what or how you do a job you will find that some people just have to criticize, because they never make mistakes(LOL). I am looking forward to seeing all the steps that you take to make this vessel yours, and yours alone. Take care, stay safe and be true to your selves.

Jade! you go girl, you can do anything, you set you mind to. Keep up the attitude and there is not anybody who can touch you., always do what you feel is right and the rest can go to pudding city! Life is too short, Enjoy it and there is not one person who has been born with the experience to do what you are accomplishing right now. So do it and let the dice fall where they may. I Think you are fantastic and I Honor Your your can do attitude and preservative.

I also just came across your channel. You did a wonderful job. I'm at least 3 times your age and raised 2 girls and made sure they could do the basics. One has a Psyc. degree and is HVAC certified and the other is a Director of Elementary Education for the state of Michigan. The most important part is being willing to jump in with both feet. Never would criticize willingness. This was very enjoyable and I subscribed. Looking forward to the future presentations.

i have drilled a lot of holes in my day. i really enjoyed the 18 minutes you spent making quite an event out of it. that shows real ability with a camera, and an improvised script. lets just say it was entertaining. i do find myself wanted to help you guys out, but it is your adventure. enjoy the process, and the destination. aloha.

We all watch for different reasons, I watch because you are living a life I and many of us only dream of living. I envy you. The people who spew hate envy you as well, but they choose to hate you for their own inadequacies and failures. They are the worst of humanity. They envy and hate you for your success. The worst thing you can ever do to such a person is to ignore them.

Well done and thanks for showing us all the learning experience. Often discovered the wisdom of the sayings "use the right tool for the job" and "think or measure twice and cut once" one day I hope to be wise enought to learn from others mistakes and apply these things consistently but I suspect I'll always know how the job should have been done better once I've done it and had to fix all my errors :-)! Looks like a nice job in the end, she'll be a boat to be proud of :-)!

Now that looks about right; once to the hardware store, twice to the hardware store for more boat stuff...today. Once, working on my new-to-me boat, I went 5 times, and I was walking. Should I tell you that? :) Nice light support system. You're doing a great job and it's so much fun to watch your progress. Ignore the critics, they're not quite there yet. Sail on!
