I already can't believe all that you guys do off grid. To share all your talents with others and to be raising a child as well,,, thats incredible. You never cease to amaze.

Fun video guys! It brought back so many memories of time I spent with my grandparents back in the 60's on their farm. They lived this way by necessity not choice and they valued and respected the nature that fed them and their family. We were "city kids" so my grandparents wanted running water for us - my uncles ran a mile of garden hose from a spring up the hill, punched a hole in the kitchen wall and dropped the hose into the sink. So, we had "running water" until it froze in the winter! We experienced the bounty of the garden year round from the root cellar carved into the hillside. Thanks for introducing us to Nicole and Jake! I have great respect for both of you couples for pursuing your dreams and being brave enough to take roads less traveled.

Didn't get to much opportunity to tell you the 3 we are semi off grid, always liked their gardening and we have raised beds multi level and potatoes in tall laundry baskets that do real well, tried natural soil here but its rough, have had nice harvests in a short growing season, high altitude has it's own element, to live this way in as much harmony as possible is the goal, produce is so much better

then vibes i get from their property gives me very similar vibes as to when you guys were building your boat. Its the sense of building something bigger then yourself that makes the hard work worth more then just some boat or cabin.

Jade and Brett, Welcome to our neighborhood, the Inside Passage, the northwest coast of North America. Jake and Nicolle demonstrate well the hard work and joy of carving a home out the temporate forest. 30 years into our off-the-grid home on an island, we can see how the forest will close in and reclaim our place (unless someone continues the effort) like the ocean dissipates the wake of a boat sailing across the ocean. With intention, care, and awareness, it feels like a longer timeline embracing and sustaining a shorter timeline.

Otters can be land based going to water for some of their needs. I live on Vancouver Island in Qualicum Beach and an otter took up residency roughly in my backyard, close to some ponds maintained by our local golf course staff. A couple of times I've walked down one of our "busy" streets with the otter right beside me. Seals are much more water based. Where my boat is moored in Comox, resident harbour seals have lived on and off the docks for many generations. There is one old male who won't budge refusing to dive into the water of the pier when people want to pass by so the marina boaters have to work up the courage to walk by the seal. He really doesn't do much when they walk by except to be verbal, saying something like "bug off, this is my place." Sea lions are easy to identify due to their size. At a local marina I often visit, we have resident sea lions there but during the herring season the local population of about six turns into about sixty. The marina is French Creek, a government run marina primarily for the commercial fisherman. The large fishing trawlers with their load of herring attracts the many additional sea lions to the area. In fact during the herring season (a couple of weeks), the residential homes close to the marina experience such loud barking from the sea lions during the night hours, many residents have a difficult time sleeping. A few fall seasons ago, I was at my boat for an overnight at the marina and was just out for a walk along the piers. It was dark, about 9:30 in the evening when some guy called me over to look into the water in the boat "put in" area between the two marinas side by side. There were three younger Orcas swimming in this confined space, I'm guessing looking for some of the resident harbour seals for a tasty snack. At one point I was literally about ten feet away from them, a memorable moment. You don't need to live off grid to experience the wonders of coastal British Columbia. Just in my backyard, adjacent to the golf course, either living there or cutting through have been cougar, otter, deer with and without fawns, ducks, owls, squirrels, rabbits, quail, our multi-generational resident racoons (currently momma, and four young teens), and sitting at my desk top computer typing this it is feeding time for the bald eagles as I see them every time at this time of the day looking for lunch. You can now understand why many consider the ocean cruising grounds from Olympia Washington up into northern coastal Alaska, including BC, to be some of the finest marine cruising in the world, but definitely north America.

Been following those two since they barely got the carport built after getting there. Jake is a incredible gardener. Nichole is also a very intelligent young lady with so many skills. They make the perfect pair off grid. I think you two would be great doing the same. Maybe you need to find a place close to Jake and Nichole. Hey, at least a off grid home and y’all could do some trade off to sail.

If you want the most otherworldy BC experience that is relatively easy to access, visit Haida Gwaii, specifically Tow Hill and North Beach. Spend an hour or two scrambling over the massive jungle deadfall in Naikoon Provincial Park. Here is the problem with containers as used them for years in the UK. They do not keep in the heat silly people tried to use natural materials as insulation but of course they proved combustible and fires happened. So use none flammable or toxic man made insulation the only way to be safe and NOT fiberglass types as they are dangerous in many other ways. Some arrive like Bricks easy to cut but need masks and protective glasses to cut them. Windows recommended are double glazed make sure you have two ways out Bolt them together again can use the Brick insulation on the floor with wooden clip together flooring. Ceiling use at least 3 ply with special paint to stop mold. As steal containers sweat and cause mold. so all wood must be treated to stop moisture and mold. Just a suggestion.
