I have a tip for you: I use an Eno Atlas XL nylon strap (the kind that are usually used for the hammock) at every single tie point on the tarp, hooked in with a caribiner. If you do this, you can actually camp in extreme weather (I used this setup to sleep outdoors during tropical storms in Hawwai'i and stayed 100% dry). Those straps are so strong that the tree you are attached to would fall over before the wind could rip your tarp away. I also use a foam pad instead of the inflatable pad. Not only do I not have to pump it, but it can't pop either.
@pedroclaro7822 Жыл бұрын
You are using an Amok Draumr with a foam pad? I know for a fact that the Draumr needs the pad to provide lengthwise support so the hammock retains its shape, so please elaborate. Is it a rollable or a foldable pad? Which hammock do you use? My only problem right now thst keeps me from buying the Draumr is lack of storm compatibility which I could get with a 4 season tarp on other hammocks.

Again another high quality video from you, I am impressed by the quality of your reviews and general tips and tricks, you are very thorough and explain things in a good tempo so it's easy to follow what you are talking about, though you do have some occasional sound issues I don't feel it takes too much away from your otherwise high quality videos :) I have a request to you as I see you are also using the Jetboil cooking system, maybe you could try all the different versions/sizes of the Jetboil systems as well as it's accessories and let us know your thoughts about it. Also a comparison between the Jetboil and MSR Windburner, which is the closest competitor I think, would be great, maybe other cooking systems would be an interesting comparison as well, specifically cheaper systems (I know they are usually louder, slower and less gas efficient, but maybe you know a good cheaper system), gas is the preferable fuel imo, may be interesting hearing your thoughts on that as well.

Thank you man, I really appreciate your nice comments. It totally makes my Day when I read stuff like this. And im glad to hear, that the AMOK makes it easier to get out and spend the night. I bet its much Better for back and neck than any traditional styled hammock. And Yeah, It can take a little practice to get in and out 😁 But the way i show it in the video is defenitely a easy way for me. But and important factor is that the lower you hang - the easyer it is to get in and out. And the higher you hang - the Better the view (ofcourse depending on your hangspots). So its really about finding the perfect hang height for you, not to low so IT Will touch the ground No matter how you sit or lay, but not to high to make It difficult to enter. If I lay on my stomach I want to be able to take my arms out from the head end and reach my duffelbag on the ground under my hammock. And with the correct hang height I get both that, and a easy entrance when i get in the hammock (the way I did in the video). PS: Im actually from Denmark. But I take sweden and norway as my home away from home as I love both Places and therefor do Adventure expeditions, hiking, kayaking, vanlife, KTM enduro trips, and etc. in both countries multiple times a year. I absolutely love Nature in both countries. 😁😁😁 And Yeah I Will definetely also have in mind to maybe do some videos for absolute beginners 😁✌🏻

I’ve been using my Amok now for 3 years. When the weather is right (any night below 65 degrees) I will sleep out back. I have my own technique for entry and exit and it’s the method that Amok said don’t do. But I can get in and out without having to anchor my bags and equipment. I like the lanyard. I can reach without one but that will be a handy upgrade. I think you Amok is older than mine seeing that your bug net zipper starts and ends on the backside. The add on ring on the overhead line is a must do. Please use a plastic or stainless loop. Damp storage can rust your ring and stain. Great video.

Thank you very much for your great and very informative video. I plan to buy a AMOK hammock but I am very in doubt about the size to choose. They have the "ordinary" size and the XL size. Even though I am only 171cm tall I have been recommended to choose the XL model by a friend (approx. same hight as me). What will you recommend?
@ExpeditionHawk3 жыл бұрын
Hi Søren. First off, sorry for the late reply ive been very hung up at work lately cause of theese crazy covid times. I would defenitely NOT take the XL version in your case. There is no Logic reasons to take the XL in your case - as I see it. You narrow Down the field of available sleeping pads, and get more Weight. But advantages for you, is close to nothing - in selecting the XL version. So I would defenitely go with the regular.
@Fiskeflett13 жыл бұрын
I bought this hammock. I bought the Amok draumr XL, just for the extra space that this XL gives. I've used it 4 times, and believe me 4 times is the number for me. I'm an average middle aged dude. I'm 170 cm tall, 47 year old and a little on the heavy side, not much BUT obviously a little is more then enough. I have as anyone else worked my sweet bum off, for the last 30 or some years. I'm not a 4 x olympic gold medalist in gymnastics or an circus contortionist or an eal, oter, snake or anything else that is flexible. I live in norway, so it tends to get a little cold in late autumn, winter or early spring. As I said I've tried this hammock out 4 times before, there will NOT be a 5th time.....That's a 100% certainty. If I filmed this 4th and LAST time I used my hammock. That video would've gone viral and viewers could've died laughing and I would've been considered a serial killer. A multi-milionaire youtuber yes, but still a convicted serial-killer My serialkiller-name could've been something like: "The viral youtube video killer". Imagine a 47 year old man, as flexible as a piece of hardwood, stiff and sore after hiking with a backpack, after gathering firewood, chopping that up and sitting down for some time. Now imagine this guy entering his hammock stuffed with a sleepingbag, a reindeer skin, pants, jacket inside of the hammock. It's -5 degrees celsius outside and I'm standing there in my long-johns only. Now the show starts. Grab your popcorn, sit back and watch the circus act start. This will be a show of epic proportions ! ! First of I'm not taller then 170 cm, that's important, very important to remember and alittle bit on the heavyside, not much but enough obviously. (heavy sigh, deep breath) I do a stretch to the left and a stretch to the right, bend forward and a careful stretch backwards , a couple of highknees. A few reassuring exhales.... I give the hammock a staredown.......OKI DOKI here we go:) Some shadow boxing for confidence and READY SET GO ! ! ! ! ! I'm in the forrest, and I need to balance out the hammock, sleepingbag, reindeer skin, clothes and last but not least ME, my body in the mix of all this. The cover where you put the inflatable mattress inside of IS slippery, the reindeer skin is slippery, my sleepingbag is slippery. Now I need to handle ALL of this in some magical way, while I'm entering THE HAMMOCK ENTERING THE HAMMOCK: I'm in the forrest, so the ground isn't level and flat. It's dark, I have a headlamp on for light, so this one is in the mix too(donkeyd*ck headlamp, f*ck off). I need to get under the ridgeline, pull my self into the hammock, put the string in that tiny ring((flexible as a pice of hardwood, I am....and of course 170cm and alittle on the heavy side)) and to zip up the mosquito net. I know it's not needed, but I like it so. It creates a better airflow inside.... My reindeer skin WILL slide on the mattress, the sleepingbag WILL slide on the reindeer skin. Some of my gear will slide out of the hammock, or partially. Something will f*ck shit up. (There's not enough room in those small pockets for all the stuff you have with you inside) OK.. I'm inside the hammock. Now for THE REINDEER SKIN. THE REINDEER SKIN: I arc my self....Well arcing myself at the best of my abilities, while I'm balancing out the hammock. The hammock is put up correct way, I've managed that :))))))))))))))))))))) WHOOOOPPPPPIIIIII. So back to the reindeer skin. Remember the mattress cover IS slippery. I'm on my back somewhat arced, pulling on the reindeer skin. Remember the sleepingbag is THERE on my righthand side, just waiting to be handled. (I think it's laughing at me, that evil IT-clown high pitched kind of giggle). The reindeer skin is now finally underneath and I'm glaring at the sleeping bag knowing the cardio workout I've just finished. Now for final act of the show. The grand finale. THE SLEEPINGBAG. GETTING INTO........THE SLEEPINGBAG: I'm in my longjohn's, it's -5 degrees celsius outside. I'm begining to become somewhat damp with sweat, after the workout with the reindeer skin. Sleepingbags tend to become somewhat clingy in the regards of moisture...... I take another deep breath and here I go...again ! First leg inside, next leg inside, everything seems to go smoothly:)) So there's a light at the end of the tunnel . Some would call that "light" a glimmer of hope....BUT(you just hope it's not the train). My backside slides in, oh f*ck the lip that needs to go under my back. I'm lying halfway inside a very slippery sleepingbag on top of a very slippery reindeer skin, on top of a very slippery mattress cover. AND I need to arc myself so I can get that last piece of sleepingbag underneath my back and over, so I can zip up my sleepingbag. After maybe 10 minutes of hard cardio workout, I'm finally inside of this contraption. F*CK F*CK F*CK I need to go and relieve myself(take a piss) of course. Oh dear lord Belzebub, you unholy creature. Out of the sleeping, sliding out of the hammock and I do my business. Back to the hammock. Again...I stare with horror and tears in my eyes, at this torture device. NOPE, f*ck this. I quit, I surrender.......nope nope and nope. I flip off my hammock and calls it names, best not written... I can guarantee you A -L- L. That the words coming out of my mouth @ this time of night, is NOT the most kind and well meaning words in the norwegian language and my vocabulary in regards of these kind of words are very very very very very very very extensive. I think I invented some new ones too. I packed up my shit, walked to my car and drove back home.....@ 4am in the morning and steaming with satanic, out of control hellish RAGE. F*CK hammock life, I'm outta here. Next time I'll put up my Bergans 4 season tent:) I hope you enjoyed this TRUE horror story. This f*cked up shit happened to me. Saturday 3rd of april in this piece of shit covid year of 2021 @ f*ck me, crap, shit, burn in hell, damn you to satan himself ahhhhhhhhh 3am in the morning. The night GOD sidestepped and DID NOT want to push his f*cking luck. The night when Belzebub himself and I became the best of friends. Thank you and best regards from. Fiskeflette

Hi @Expedition Hawk. Thx a lot for this totally nice video. It is really great and now I am upgrading my Draumr according to your advicements. At 15:15 you are talking about some spareparts, which I do not know where to buy in DK. Is it krympeflex or something else? I do not think it is krympeflex, but if you could give me a link where to buy "your krympeflex" here in DK it would be very nice. Again thx a lot for this nice video. Peter It is very warm these nights and sleeping outside in an AMOK makes really sense

Hey! What were the items you used for the foot and head end? To replace sticks. Cable trays?
@ebacko40484 жыл бұрын
Again, awsome vid. Perfect tips. There is only Ine question I have. When you’re in the draumr, is your head at the tip of the pad in the hammock? I had about 5-10cm from my head to the end of the pad whilst in the hammock, and I slid towards the foot end. So is the point to be at the very end or the tip of the pad at your head end in the draumr hammock?
@ExpeditionHawk4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 I really appreciate it. Well im pretty sure my head is very near the end of the pad. Because I normally put the downjacket as you saw - or my sweater, between the pads head end, and the head end wall, and when im in my bag My sleepingbag Hood and pillow are actally resting on top of the end of the pad and the jacket. So I would defenitely say my head is at the end of the pad and not 10-15cm below it. But the hammock is still hanging in the poles right now, so I will post a picture tomorrow of my headend while in the hammock - on my Instagram: expedition_hawk Then you can see how it looks like. But what you could also do, is to raise your leg/foot end a little, on your straps inside the hammock. That might also even out 😁🙏🏻

@@ebacko4048 the picture is now Up on Instagram - there you can clearly see where my head rests on the sleeping pad. As expected its at the absolute end of it. I bend down the wall behind my head so you can see it more clearly. But also as said, between my head and that end wall og the hammock head end, I normally put my downjacket or a wool sweater or whatever i have of soft clothing. That gives a little support for my sleepingbag Hood and pillow. And then it as a bonus insulate from the outer wall. 😁✌🏻

Excellent video! I plan on purchasing one soon but I am curious about the size of the tarp! Is it big enough in the torrential rain? It seems a little smaller than I would think is necessary! I am thinking that maybe to purchase a larger tarp to satisfy my worries about rain intruding!!
@ExpeditionHawk3 жыл бұрын
Hi Brad. First off, sorry for the late reply ive been very hung up at work lately cause of theese crazy covid times. I Will say, i have never gotten a wet hammock under that tarp, when heavy raining. But, i Will say that if i notice heavy rain is coming in, I Usually lower my hammock and my tarp closer to the Ground, and pull the corners of the tarp Down towards the center of the hammock so it becomes a more closed box for the hammock. But ofcourse you Can always buy a bigger tarp to be absolutely sure, but as Said it has Never been an issue for me i must say hehe :P

@ExpeditionHawk4 жыл бұрын
Hi gwrulz 😁 When packing Theese pads down, fold Them 2 times, so it has 3 layers. And then roll It Up 😁🔥 just like IT comes when you buy it, that is the smartest and best way to roll It Up if u wanna use a stuffsack. I would not suggest to stuff it down
@maxwellmark4 жыл бұрын
Expedition Hawk For me, it depends on if I am packing to go home or just packing to hike to a different location. Going home, I do just as you but I have found it much easier and quicker to leave the pad in the Draumr (deflated) and simply stuff the whole thing into my backpack. I don’t put everything back into their stuff sacks until I’m heading home. (Example) kzbin.info/www/bejne/moOyo3uFeLCtndk Then the pad is tri-fold and rolled up...the Draumr is carefully stuffed into its sack..

I found some very flexible tubing at the hardware store. It’s normal use is for irrigation drip lines, just cut to length...or you can get the new aluminum sticks that Amok now sells. They are similar to tent poles with a shock cord to allow separation and fit into the Draumr stuff sack

thanks @@maxwellmark ! I have to go check out the poles. I always thought that was something missing from the Amok. My solutions always pop out 🤷♂️ I must not be the only one that feels this way. The poles are sold out at AmokEquipment right now.

Hi, Great videos and reviews. Just bought myself a Amok Draumr... :-). A question have you ever tried the Exped Chair Kit LW? and if so, is it possible to keep it on the sleeping madrass while in the Amok? or is it too much and not necessary?
@ExpeditionHawk4 жыл бұрын
Hey man. I havent tried the chair kit actually, but i would not want to keep the chair kit on, inside the hammock. As there isnt much empty space inside the sleepingpad sleeve in the Amok - if you are using the 9LW model. There would be no, left over space. And then i have a feeling it will give some rinkles in the sleeve which will be uncomfy maybe. Also I would defenitely say its not necessary as the hammock can go into chairmode itself. So for those long periods of time where u wanna sit comfy - the hammock itself is perfect in sit mode. If you on the other hand want a small chair, i think i wold buy a helinox one chair or something instead :P

Hints, ideas on how to keep the sleeping bag from sliding out as I am getting in? The fabric of the amok and the sleeping bag are both slippery! I am not agile enough to just squirm around and pull it up when it slips. I have tried a carpet underpaid: it falls out too. I have tried pins: afraid of puncturing the air pad or ripping the amok or bag from too much pressure.. Help???!!

Thank you so much for this video! I have always been a tent person but have recently been looking to get into hammock camping for the warmer months. At the moment I'm definitely considering getting the Amok Draumr 5.0. One probably stupid question I have is when you have the tarp set up in "rain mode" towards the end of the video, how would you prevent the rain coming in if it was raining sideways?? Hope that makes sense and sorry if it is a stupid question as I have never ever been in a hammock before in my life so I am absolutely clueless 😂 Thanks again for this video and thank you in advance for your reply

Hi julius. First off, im very sorry for the late reply, ive been working two jobs lately. So its been very hectic. Normally i respond within a day or two.Luckily i just quit one of the jobs. So now im catching up on all my comments here and back making new trips and videos. But to answer your question, no - no questions are stupid. If it rains sideways - i would simply just change direction of my hammock setup. So you are facing the wind direction. And also you have the choice of making an even lower hang so you get closer to the ground and then automaticly get less wind in as it is lower near the ground.

I've found that when using an air filled pad my back gets really cold in fall, spring and winter - so we normally use an insulated pad (thermorest type). Does that work in the hammock? thanks.
@ExpeditionHawk4 жыл бұрын
I Will say, its only the first 20-40 mins i feel a light Cold in my behind when using the downmat, after that its a absolutely perfect. Even in harsch Winther conditions. The difference is the synmat does not. Its perfect from 1st second. It though in arctic conditions, isnt as warm as the downmat (when the downmat has had its "loading time"). Thermarest often use, horisontal baffles in their sleeping pads. That does not Work in the amok hammock. It needs sleepingpads with horisontal baffles But if its possible to maybe use a thin insulated foam pad underneath your sleepingpad with horisontal baffles. Thats a maybe, i dont know for certain. But i Will test it out 🤟🏻😁
