This game fixed a lot of faults that their previous title held; -Archers are no longer broken -No silly time limits on quests -No annoying fatigue system -Streamlined healing system -No nonsense ''surprise'' rounds that made no sense On top of that it's bigger and looks better, great improvement.

Total war by far owns the most play time hours for me, not having battles in this game isn't a huge deal if everything else is great. In total war I end up auto-resolving a lot of battles late in the campaign anyways for the sake of time. Hopefully 2022 is better than 2021 was for games. You save us from so many bad games. I played through the Demo of _Expeditions Rome_ in one afternoon and pre-purchased it straight after completion (something I almost never do). It takes me back to _Centurion: Defender of Rome_ (1990). I can't wait until this is released in a little over 24 hours (Australian time).

wow...I thought I was the only person that ever played Centurion. Loved that game. I can still hear the horses neighing and elephants trumping. Only problem I had with that game was the horrible battle AI. But to be fair this was like 1990, but all you had to do was just play defense and let them beat themselves. Even with those huge Cav armies...just sit in place and win as long as you have a full strength army you could never lose.

From Gladiators in the arena to chariot races, seducing Cleopatra on a barge on the Nile river, battle tactics and military campaigns. It was a wonderful experience. Did you ever play Starflight I and Starflight II? They were brilliant simple DOS games as well.

The first game had one incident where one of your female troops decided she wanted to be a desert queen (or jungle queen in that case) and when it starts to create problems and she gives you the whole modern liberated no slut shaming shtick, you can save yourself alot of trouble by being like “lady, we are in the jungle, surrounded by hostiles, thousands of miles from home. I’m not chancing moral killing love triangle bullshit or an STD epidemic in camp. Lock your shit down.”

Except they ruin the immersion later, its almost impossible to have a male only army and its like they meet a quota between white men, black men and women. This gets tidious the more you play since you also have to kill a lot of women. Its like wartales, they made a % so you will always fight against a diverse group

They deal with alot of difficulties under roman law. You get on my case but think an empire spanning the Mediterranean and Europe wouldn’t take Africans into its legions. This game has been a complete joy so far. I cannot believe this basically came out of nowhere to me. The only thing I wish that was a little different would be the UI for the legion battles. It is difficult to understand how many troops are in each army, morale or any relevant information to help guide decisions on stratagems. The battles are fine. I just want to know what is going on beyond relative army strength.

I like how you're talking about that "free to do anything" turn based style combat as it's something special, when the original X-com did just that in 1994. It's not a stab at you, but at the way game design has stagnated in the last couple of decades, so that when they finally implement a feature that existed in older games it feel like it's an awesome thing.

I really like the mechanic that you get your action back if you take out an 'untrained' enemy. It really makes you feel like you and your praetorians (and strong enemies) are very skilled fighters who can easilly take out poorly trained enemies.

This series has flown completely under my radar until Fextralife covered it a day or so ago. I checked out the demo on Steam which lasts a good few hours if you're taking your time and I have to say I'm hooked. I was already seriously considering grabbing it on release day and hearing the game get a glowing endorsement from Mack is probably the best final push I needed. :D

I've just about all the Total War games, yet barely touched any of them. You know, hard drive space is becoming a problem. Half my games await DL as I can't fit any more. Wish camera options were better. It doesn't deal well with altitude in multi-level situations (eg. temple of apollo, 3 story watch-towers, etc.) And it could use a mini-map imo. But other than that everything else I've encountered so far has been a lot of fun. And getting even better as I learn different systems (eg. crafting).

This game is really good , good writers that uses brains . My god competent writing this days is like miracle. You just see people who made the game red " book or two" and learned something from life. They also gave some thought about power and politic . Play like son of Rome , paterfamilias ,that is what is game about and have excellent gameplay. Side quests are far from boring and sometimes unexpected direction , like philosophical debate with your magister or legal-moral debate with Cicero that give you perk depend of choice . Really interesting game even voice acting is nice . Game doesn't show everything it got right away but it is never empty walk , pacing is good . Many times is not politicly correct at all but is not AAA and thanks god no one cares . I will play expeditions Viking even if it is few years old and little voice acting cause i love when developers care for games they made.

Conquistadors is quite a lot more on the survival discovery side of things than the other two games with exploring ruins, avoiding traps, and starving to death. Am a tad bit let down that the formula changed since then but it looks like they are still making good stuff, this definitely looks a lot better than Viking.

Wow I haven't even heard of this one, it looks incredibly good! This year could be one of the best ever, early on we are getting in February Elden RIng, Horizon Zero Dawn 2, Dying Light 2, and I believe Elex 2. Balder's Gate III should finally finish out the year and maybe the new Marvel XCOM type franchise from Firaxis will complete and thats just off the top of my head.

Mack I hope you are on the mend and all is healing well. At this time of the year with dark days, and dark moods with the ever present nonsense news we face day after day, then no wonder gamers turn to their magic hardware for some fun !. Well I know you will be reviewing it soon, but God of War for the PC is excellent !. A very very good port, and I know only too well, myself included how touchy I am about console ports !!. God of War plays really well, ( no story spoilers ! ), great voice acting and sound, good story and really really good so far as I continue to play this game. Yes it comes across as a typical console game, with tightly controlled areas, but its in the same light as Horizon Zero Dawn, a good port, excellent combat, and good story, if a little contrived in areas. Mack I am waiting for this review from you soon. I know you are busy. I wait patiently. I know my comments are out of context here, but I recommend it. And then in Feb 2022 we have Elden Ring, hmmmm meh ?!, not sure about that one.
