They are very cleverly designed and built. In effect, you have a cavity wall dwelling, where the outside wall keeps the rain out, and the inside wall keeps the heat in. So, you have a dry, warm dwelling. In addition, any enemy trying to break in, through the outer wall, would find themselves trapped in a narrow corridor, where they could be easily neutralised.

@@GanKtaz As far as intelligence goes, past peoples were, on average, probably more intelligent than present. They had to be, to survive! These days, when I see videos of people texting, and stepping into the road without looking, and getting hit by an oncoming vehicle, I fear for the future of the human race!

@@niklar55 They had to compensate for the technology they didn't have. Nowadays we are too reliant on it. Wouldn't be surprised if we one day start taking the blue pill as neo and living inside a damn computer.

There are many others in Shetland but sadly most were pulled down over the centuries and the stones carted away to build houses and walls . This one was saved because it was on an island and only the ramparts were taken if you get an aerial view you can just see the outline of these .
