My first pony was a shetland and I hold her memory in my heart. She was wonderful with us kids and always looked after us. Where ever we went she was there and happy to be with us. Her name was Dimples, white with a few grey dots on her that I called her happy dimples because as a small child, it made me happy to see her. I was 6 and asked my grandfather for a pony for my birthday. He bought her from another farm where she was left in a pasture for several years , she was in bad shape. But with a lot of love and a good vet to help, we got her on the right path and fell into place among us kids where she would never be alone again. Shetlands are amazing ponies.

My Uncle raised Shetlands. He said ponies get a bad rap bc people don't train them like horses. They treat them like toys. His herd sire was my cousin's mount when she was a kid. He went in the house, raided the kitchen & left tracks on the carpet! On a regular basis! None of them were mean or stubborn. They were raised right...
@EnyalienMini2 жыл бұрын
Too often, they were smarter than their humans, and will take over and run things if allowed😊. I have raised Miniatures for 28 years, which are Shetlands that were imported many years ago, and when the market crashed over here the smallest were rebranded as Miniature Horses and all kinds of tales made up to distance them from their real roots. I can't live without them. Loving, intelligent, they absolutely are the best therapy as she said! I wish there was a way to get their Shetland papers back, to honor the heritage.

My mother is a dedicated breeder of these little rascals so I've grown up with them all around me. A shetland pony's personality varies completely between individuals, some are super high spirited and jumpy while others are so calm they would barely mind a bomb exploding right next to them! But generally speaking they're very cuddly, smart and stubborn. They're commonly used for kid's riding and competing, which they're the perfect size for, but also for activities like agility. Though often handled by kids shetlands are no beginner horses. They are smart and will test you and if you can't handle them when they do they won't listen to you. Shetland foals are really mischievous and will most likely eat your shoes if you don't watch your back. 😅 And at other times they'll practically lay in your lap. Once you've gotten to know a shetland it can quickly become your best friend and it will be significantly easier to work together.
@Vbluevital Жыл бұрын
Now that's an honest assessment. They are not beginner ponies. 🤗
@paulinemegson85192 жыл бұрын
I so agree with that breeder. I have met so many spoilt rotten Shetland ponies. Bought for little kids cos they’re cute and tiny, they quickly learn to terrorise their riders, because they’re strong, and smart, and without adult supervision, they’ll run roughshod over kids unless they’re trained otherwise. I’ve been bitten and kicked by more shetlands than any other horse/pony, in particular one called Marshmallow, a fat white fluffball who was sweet as his namesake until you wanted him to do something that he didn’t want to. That’s when you understood that a Shetland pony is just as stubborn as any donkey, and can throw tantrums to rival any toddler lol

Very Nice! What a Dream come true for all the little horse lovers taking care of their little Shetlands. I don't think you ever grow out of that Awe and Love for these Shetlands. I can remember a very long campaign I kept up for years with my parents about why I needed a Shetland Pony and how he could live in our huge back yard plus he could run free in the Alfalfa fields out back. To make matters worse, there was a book called "Hopscotch" about a Shetland Pony who did live in a little girls back yard. So I used that for proof of why I NEEDED that Shetland Pony 😂 this was the best ever video. I love the baby ponies all runnin about in the green fields of Scotland and their very Blessed owner is so right, "this is Heaven." Oh yes. It absolutely is 🐴💝🌞🙆🐎 May the Sun shine Warm Upon your Face ~ Wild Irish Blessings to you 🍀

I remember when my sister's Shetland Pony gave birth. Suddenly the foal was just there, in her stable. But seeing as it was a home made stable the Fjord next to it could stick it's head over the rail to look at it. The mother was not pleased by this at all. We would have let her out, but the weather was terrible at that time and it was the middle of the night. The next day though, it was running around her mother, playing and trying to figure out why her mother wanted the fjords to stay as far away as possible. Edit: As to their stubborness ane cleverness. . . I also remember when mother and daughter got out and ran away. Just at a slow enough trott for me to keep up. And they made me chase them some 2-3 kilometers down the road. Running flat out as fast as I could. Luckily they took pitty on me eventually, stopped and let me take them back home by the scruff of their hair. And they were very kind when I did this, so it wasn't so much pulling as just holding their hair as they walked beside me. They are clever, naughty but also very personable creatures. =)

I learned a lot about this breed when I took care of a shetland mare. The mare was not fed by the owner in the Netherlands. I had to go on bicycle for about 8 kilometers to feed her once or twice a week. The pony was very tame, I could sit on the ground behind her, she did not kick me. She got very excited when she saw me. I gave her hay and something called BIX in NL.Also fresh water. I also cleaned her abri(shelter). People threw stones at her, I noticed because the stones where not there before. Later I saw the pony in a park in Tiel NL. Ponies must be kept with other ponies, people do not realise.

I have a friend who grew up on a farm, and their parents thought a Shetland pony would be nice, but my friend said it was a mean little thing unless her father was right there. So I understand what the owner said about Shetlands having a reputation for being bad. Her description of people tolerating bad behavior because they're so cute reminds me of "small dog syndrome," where owners let a little dog do things that no big dog would be allowed to do. I'm glad the problem is not inbred but can be avoided if you know what you are doing.

I have an American Shetland pony in my horsemanship program here in Alaska, and she is most fantastic at being patient with the children as well as breaking down the pre-determined opinions of a lot of adults who had less than positive experiences with the breed. I completely agree with the lady on this video about it being all hinging in training and treatment. Too many ponies never get a chance to be handled by experienced horse people and they are allowed (and even unwittingly encouraged) to become naughty. Horses who are handled similarly end up the exact same way but are considered dangerous.
@blackbetsy592 жыл бұрын
American Shetlands have no 'Shetland' in them now and haven't for many, many generations, the Americans wanting basically a finely built miniature/small hackney pony which is what the American Shetland is. It's a miniature pony with hackney leg action and nothing to do with the true Scottish Shetland Pony at all. The American Shetland are a nice enough miniature pony, but they are NOT a Shetland at all.
