**CORRECTION** The Sony 70-200mm F/2.8 GM II is not weather sealed either. They have simply boosted the moisture and dust resistance around all seams, butons and lens mount.

I normally film my daughter's ringette games (just normal game video) with the 24-105 F4 on my a7siii. I did a hype video for them and threw on the GM 70-200 2.8 (mkii) and couldn't believe my eyes. Absolutely brilliant image. I always shoot through the viewfinder so it was astonishing even while filming.

Appreciate this E, I just shot the Floyd Mayweather vs Gotti fight and found the tamron a bit difficult in certain shots especially at ringside as it focused on the ropes often causing me to shoot further away than I wanted. I think if they release an update 70-200 F4 will be the a alternative option. Yes you'll lose one stop of light but it will have the fast autofocus, will weigh less than the Tamron and probably be 2/3 the price of the GM. And with all the AI noise reduction options the 1 stop of light might not make a difference.

After watching the intro before, he told us which lens was which I actually guess correctly. The reason I was able to figure it out was for lens number one you’re having a hard time zooming out quickly enough in one of the shots, and if I remember correctly, that was one of the issues with the Tamron it had a pretty long zoom throw. There was also better fall off on the field as well on the Sony. The thing is, I had to really hunt for it. I believe the image stabilization, likely makes it worth it to buy the more expensive lens. If you’re professional videographer. Additionally, the extra 20 mm is also probably worth it as in Videography zooming in is a lot more difficult to maintain quality than just photography itself. Unless you’re shooting 8K, which there’s probably not very many people doing that at the moment. And if they are, I feel sorry for the wallets as storage can get expensive at that point in time. The new Tamron G2 might be a better contender, though, as it has image stabilization has improved sharpness and is only $100 more expensive.

Yeah. For me it wasn't so much the improved video quality features. But it was the auto focus capabilities or "hit rate". With the Sony it was dang near 98-99% with only a few here and there actually not in focus. Whereas with the Tamron it was between 65-80% or so. Still good. The Sony A7IV is a full frame camera and I’m not sure there is a full frame version of the 70-300mm lens. Also, moving around the pitch and filming from different perspectives will give you much more shot variety than an extra 100mm on the zoom.

3:28 at the image sharpness test, were the two lenses used with two different camera body? The skin tones look so different, specially the subtle redness in shadow with Sony lens, giving the picture more lively feel than the tamron version, is the color difference due to different camera body, different color grade or just the color reproduction of lens? Personally in that shot, I was liking the sony lens’ image better.

I own version one of the Tamron. I do landscapes so a lot of the shortcomings do not bother me. I had a chance to try the G2 version of the lens. It has most of the features of the Sony GM II with the exception of the aperture ring. Could you try the test with the G2 version of the Tamron. I found it to be sharper. Stabilization helps a lot on the long end and the 1:2 macro is a nice bonus. It is a definitely a cut above version 1 of the lens.

@@BeyondTheGame_E You have 68K subscribers. They should give you a lens to test and report. Have you asked them? I think it is going to do a lot better than the original. I have tried it and it a better by a mile. With Version 1, I get erratic focusing when the focus point is at or near the corners. That behavior is gone with G2 version. G2 is also sharper in the corners at f2.8. I am thinking of upgrading mostly for better sharpness and the 1:2 macro capability at 70mm. Stabilization and better focusing are bonuses for my type of work.

Depends what your expectation or need is for the extra range. Going from 150 to 200 is great if you just wish you had about 15% more zoom. But it won't turn a wide shot into a close-up. And also, regarding teleconverters, there is a lost of image quality with a teleconverter that is quite similar to simply scaling up your footage in post. So personally, I'm not a huge fan.
