The plume of smoke jetting out of the side of the overturned tank @16:48 has nothing to do with fire suppression, the throttle is wide open and the diesel motor inverted thus consuming it's lubrication oil.
@mikeworkman3593
@mikeworkman3593 Жыл бұрын
The only thing true about that segment, was that the throttle probably did get stuck( most likely due to work boots). There isn't any 'fire suppression' in a tank lol. And while the thick smoke is oil being burned, it's worse than that because once they get a source of oil, there is no shutting them down(known as 'running away'). Working on diesels for the last 30 years, I've only had it happen to me personally twice. Once was not due to oil, but an 8-71 fuel rack jamming the governor(you don't know how fast you can get a valve cover off till you hear that RPM start climbing lol), and the second one was me not realizing that owners had topped off the oil level after a turbo failure(the dipstick was close to full), and there was more than just residual oil in the CAC(probably like 2-3 gallons lol). I was in the cab when I started it(I say this cause many things have rear or side start panels, buses, fire trucks), and the engine went full tilt, don't stop on go, don't collect $200. Straight to 6k RPM. You couldn't see an inch in front of you outside the cab, and all I could think of was horror stories of flywheels ripping off like a buzzsaw and coming through the cab. I shut off the key(which did nothing) and ran for my life lol. My feet went right into a drain pan full of coolant, and I probably looked like a looney tune character running in place lmao. I hit the ground hard and just started crawling like SEAL team 6 lol. By the time the engine died, there was like one cubic acre of smoke. When the engine was disassembled, you can see that the rods flexed so bad they whacked the inside of the block(millimeters away) and cracked chunks out of it. Total loss. IDK how it got paid for, but it wasn't from me lol. I think they claimed some kind of warranty or something. It was like 16 years ago, my memory is a bit fuzzy.

That bridge in the train clip is a frankly astounding piece of rugged engineering. I realize the top of the train car is just sheet metal, but the sheer tonnage pressed up against that structure seems like it would have been enough to do the job on it's own. It isn't pretty, but damn that thing is tough.
@mikeworkman3593
@mikeworkman3593 Жыл бұрын
You can watch it flex some. I was thinking the same thing at first. But then I thought about how strong that bridge must be to carry other trains over it. It's probably not concrete, but hardened steel trusses, specifically designed to flex, to prevent cracking over time. What I don't get: Yes there was just some thin sheet metal, but if you look at each end of the car it looks like there are steel end caps that are the same height as the sheet metal. Maybe those were just tall(or short depending how you think about it) enough to make it under the bridge. IMO, I think the train normally clears. I guess is that there was a defect in one of the cars, and one piece of a roof caught something, and it just caused a chain reaction(the straw that broke the camel so-to-speak). I can't see that they didn't know that a train car wouldn't fit. You can see how slow they were going also. Perhaps it's something they have done many times, and just got away with it before. Probably mere millimeters of clearance.

It is static electricity caused by the grain particles rubbing against each other/ The spark causes an explosion in the dust.
@docferringer
@docferringer Жыл бұрын
Could be the grain in the middle of the silo started to ferment but it didn't have enough room or oxygen to go full tilt. The extra heat continued to build and soften the metal parts of the silo, then the silo collapses. Then the burning grain at the middle is suddenly EVERYWHERE and suddenly there is plenty of oxygen and grain dust to get that party started! Or it was static electricity. Or sparks fly off the metal as everything collapses. Or the rending of metal at the end did it...put them all together and you really can't stop it from happening.

Those cranes in Alphen aan den Rijn, The Netherlands could easily carry the load of the bridge deck; no problems there. The problem was that the cranes were on special pontoons floating on the water. When the cranes took the load, the pontoons sank deeper into the water. Because of this the position of the cranes was no longer straight. When making the calculations for this hoist, they did not take that into account. When the cranes started turning to get the bridgedeck into the right position, the center of gravity shifted outside one crane's footprint. This caused most of the load to be transferred to only one crane. That crane collapsed and the rest followed. This was the new bridge deck that was supposed to be hoisted in place that day. All in all, the renovation of the bridge took about 8 months longer because of this accident.

@@BurkaLifter Because the commenter is obviously ill-informed lol. It didn't need anything more than the O2 it received after the wind began blowing. Someone else in here stated that they were surprised it didn't explode while is was still together. This is the common trend of people watching too many action movies. Another good one is people not understanding that an almost empty tank of gas is less flammable than a full one. I've seen vehicles on fire until they burn to nothing, and they never explode. One time my dad and grandfather bought our first boat. They went out to test it out but eventually, the engine stopped and wouldn’t crank. My grandfather went to the back to check and he saw BUTTLOADS of water in the engine compartment and filling FAST. They put on life jackets and tried blowing horns as loud as they could to signal for help to no avail. They kept blowing horns and waving for help as they continued to sink, until another boat passing buy saw what was wrong and stopped by to help. They managed to tow the boat to shore and lift it onto the trailer to bring it home. What had happened is, the boat wasn’t properly maintained at the winter so when we bought the boat, we bought it improperly maintained. Because of this, the pumps that were supposed to pump water into the engine to keep it from overheating was pumping water INTO THE BOAT.

It turns out there is a tradition or belief that to cut across someone path is to soak up thier bad luck. Why would they have lost the corn in the silo collapse? All they have to do is scoop it back into a truck... it isn't like the corn was destroyed. Y'all think that corn is never stored on the ground?

There was one death in the Dutch bridge accident, a dog was killed in one of the houses 😟 I'm not a crane expert, but i have lifted machines over 70 tons, and you have to be very aware of 3 things: 1 Is the crane stable? 2 Heavy loads have a LOT of momentum, you have to lift and rotate them VERY SLOWLY otherwise you put way more lateral force on the crane, simply put; that the load will pull it sideways if you move too fast. Here they had 2 cranes to spread the load, but that means they both have to move in perfect unison, these ones did not. 3; The barges. Proper ballast placing on the boats. Once the bridge part went over the side, the barges will obviously want to list over, you can compensate a little by tying them to the shore etc, and pump water in tanks from one side of the barge to another. That is how they test airliners to simulate passengers moving around the plane. These guys moved way too fast!

I would have thought months went into the planning of exactly how to do that, including meetings between the crane operators, engineers, tug boat captains, and the guys in charge of controlling the ballast in the barges. I would have gone over it many times, it's really amazing to me that was allowed that to happen in a country like that. In a third world country that's just another day.

@@jovetj I think your equation sucks! Want to know why? Dogs are ALWAYS loyal, people are not. Dogs will instinctively block a small child from wandering into traffic. Dogs help millions of blind and other disabled people . Dogs search for drugs, explosives, and buried people. Show me just ONE human who can do all of that, you sad fool. The more i know people, the more i like animals.😖

The reason for the prior damage to the auto racks was that this crew was switching. They had already pulled forward, damaged some of the cars, then shoved back, then were pulling forward again when the guy was able to get there with his camera.

The crew is supposed to know their territory and that includes all the movement restrictions, including height/width. They also are supposed to know the contents of their train (the consist-"CON-sist").. so, while the dispatcher messed up, the train's crew could have questioned their route with the DS or stopped.

The smoke from the tank is the engine exhaust, it got darker because, when it rolled over, the engine oil went into the cylinders thus being burned with the fuel causing the dark smoke as well as the huge amount of smoke after the tank was totally upside down, the throttle might have gotten stuck, from the sounds of it I'd say it was from what's called a runaway diesel engine, this happens when a diesel engine ingests hydrocarbons or a flammable vapor through the air intake system and uses it as a fuel source, the only way to stop it is to cut off the engines air supply.
@cambridgemart2075

Nothing to do with the throttle, as soon as the engine starts pumping its own oil into the cylinders it has become uncontrollable.
