Hi Yan. I have this feeling of wonder and joy. You install in us a greater appreciation of this beautiful planet and its people. Not by showing us the big and the magnificent of tourist brochures, but the ordinary, daily, humble and humane. I followed you to many places of the world, and somehow my mind is also transported to places I visited, people I met, the little things. Because you learn me to appreciate and remember the beauty of the ordinary. It is such a different place to be in my mind and heart from following the news, the big moves on the chess board of politics, the weird hyper attention for disaster without showing a proud girl smiling, an old man happy to explain, a child showing his or her room, and the joy of a good meal. Thanks, dear friend, who decided to be our eyes in places never heard of, and teaches us a lesson of the joy of everyday life.

According to the astronomical calendar of the Yi ethnic group, the day of Torch Festival when the North Star points due south is a relatively important season in agriculture. At that time, pests were breeding, and torches inserted in the fields would drive away the pests, symbolizing the Yi people's worship of flames. On that day, men and women in every village would dress up and communicate with each other to get to know each other

Thankyou, Yan, for this colourful, vibrant video of the Yi ethnic group Torch Festival. It was visually stunning, and your field of study (and the drone) equip you to produce work which is both educational and beautiful. I hope for a future where related aspects of it might come together in comparative form in other media. Your work makes me want to travel like no tourist guide does, and takes me places I wouldn't be able to go.

Greetings from Brasil. You videos from China make me feel like I am in a completely different culture than where I live, like a tourist, but at the same time it makes me feel some kind of nostalgic feeling, the streets signs, the sounds, the colors... I feel like I have been connected to that place without ever traveling there! Those ladies that embrace tradition looks very beautiful and fulfilled too. Love the walking around showing peoples lives without any script... thanks Your channel is one of the few things that make youtube still worth keeping an account for.

The best organized Torch Festival was held in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Kunming, Yunnan Provence, China~ If you want to experience it, Every year on the 23rd and 24th of the sixth lunar month in the Chinese lunar calendar (because the dates are floating, the dates are different every year, it may be in mid-July or early August), the grand Torch Festival is held in Shilin Yi Autonomous County. Activities include strongman wrestling competitions, bullfighting competitions, and Yi dance competitions represented by each village. The activities are colorful and the parades with torches are lit to drive away bad luck, evil spirits, and diseases. . . . The Torch Festival lasts for seven days and is an important annual ethnic festival in Stone Forest that attracts tourists. During the Torch Festival, tourists can also stop by to visit the world's largest karst geological park, called "Shilin" means Stone Forest (The Shilin Yi Autonomous County also means stone forest and is named after it)

The "Torch Festival" has been prevalent since the Han and Tang Dynasties and has endured for over a thousand years. According to historical records, the "Torch Festival" originated from the fire worship of the Yi ancestors who inhabited the lofty and chilly mountains and had a profound dependence on and reverence for fire. They believed that fire was a treasure bestowed upon mankind by God, capable of driving away the evil spirits of wild beasts and blessing the harvest and family tranquility. Every year after the busy farming season, the Yi people conduct a grand fire sacrifice ceremony to express their gratitude to the fire god for his blessings and pray for a more prosperous coming year. The earliest record of the Yi Torch Festival is found in the Yuan Dynasty's(1271-1368) "Yunnan Zhiluo", which states: "On the 24th of June, people would employ bamboo sticks to hold torches and keep them burning throughout the night. Moreover, every child would also run around with small torches, 'burning as a form of play, known as 'driving away' until dawn."
