What a great restoration job they did on this castle! Here in my country I feel we are too quick to demolish the past as we have been living through a development boom here with little to no heritage protection laws

What was the cause of the fire that destroyed the original castle - an accident or the locals decided to rise up and destroy their overlords?

Haha no by that time the castle didn’t wield any power anymore over the surroundings 😅 the last owner, jonkheer Armand (jonkheer is one of the lowest ranks of nobility in Belgium and the Netherlands) had ordered that the fireplaces (which hadn’t been used in a long time) were lit so that the castle would be nice and warm for a delegation from Brussels that would arrive the next day. Unfortunately it got a bit too warm and the castle caught fire 🔥 it was an unfortunate accident but luckily the main structure survived and locals and firemen were able to rescue a lot of the historical furniture and paintings!!

Haha no! Belgium still has a king and queen but only for ceremonial purposes. They don’t hold any political power. During the time that this castle was built, Belgium didn’t even exist yet and it was the Teutonic order of knights who ruled the surrounding lands 🤗
