Experiencing the Polar Night in Northern Norway

Join me on a hike to experience the polar night here in Lofoten, Norway. The polar night is a phenomenon that occurs north of the arctic circle and south of the antarctic circle where the nighttime lasts for more than 24 hours due to the axial tilt of the earth, which basically means that for a period of time the sun never rise above the horizon and there is no daylight throughout the day. Where I live, in Lofoten, this period lasts for about a month before the sun is gradually seen at the horizon again.
If you’ve never experience the polar night before it’s quite an interesting experience, and even more so if you live a place where it occurs and you can experience the gradual change. Even though the sun never rise throughout the day there is still some light to be seen. Mostly twilight a few hours each day around noon, and of course moonlight when the moon is visible. Northern lights (aurora borealis) can also light up the sky, but doesn’t really light up the landscape that much for the human eye.
There are also other factors that impact the light levels throughout this period of polar nights. Most notably is whether or not there is cloud coverage and how dense it is. On a day with clear skies the twilight can be quite strong, but if there’s a thick cloud covering with precipitation even the twilight might not be that visible. If the ground is covered in snow it also helps to brighten the landscape.

I was almost hoping for northern lights when I read the title but this was equally special. The snow looks almost animated as if having a mind of its own. And that coffee must taste really good in a cold night. Wish you a great start in 2021 and lots more subscribers!

Wow! Here's a good example of how something slightly different can still be (starkly) beautiful. It reminds me of winter back home, but we get a few hours of sun ... sometimes. Great vid!

Haha, it's definitely not exciting in any way, but I find it fascinating. It depends on where you are in Norway. Where I live, in Lofoten, it's no sun for about a month. If you are in further north, for example on Svalbard it lasts for for almost four months.

Hey man arent you afraid of the bears or somethin?
@KristianPletten

Thanks for watching! There aren't any bears around these parts of Norway, so there's not much to worry about. When it's dark most of the day you also learn to just accept it and go about your day as usual.

Thanks Madoka! Yes, the plants around here are quite stubborn. Can't say the same about our indoor plants. They do suffer a bit from having almost no sunlight. 😄

Haha, it's a strange feeling so I can understand! It was actually in the middle of the day, and without any sunlight the coffee sure helps. 😄
