I remember using WIndows 20 00 for the computer lab my university had. I had a side job being a technician in the lab and was impressed on how stable it was. A lot of us techs would prank each other using "net send" messages. This way way back before XP and people started using net send for spam.

I actually preferred Windows 2000 Professional over Windows XP because it doesn't have that awful DRM activation that was introduced with XP and later variants of Microsoft Windows . It was lighter,less bloated and had lower hardware requirements

I had a Dell Dimension 2300 at the time with only 256MB of ram, and it ran XP poorly. I got a copy of 2000 Professional and put it on it instead, ran a lot faster!

In high school I used Windows Me and then jumped to XP in college. Never even tried Windows 2000 until a few years back and it’s become one of my favorites. I now have two vintage Windows laptops, one for 2000 and one for XP.

I was fortunate to have experienced Windows 2000 for the first time when my dad’s auto repair shop, Noah’s Garage, had its first PC, which originally had Windows 95 installed. That computer was custom-built by a local computer shop called Learning Systems Technologies. Noah’s Garage was owned by my grandfather at the time until he retired in 2020. Windows 2000 was my very first introduction to Space Cadet Pinball. Back then, I didn’t know that particular version of Space Cadet Pinball was merely a limited version of the pinball table that was included in Full Tilt! Pinball.

I found out a while ago that the game first came out with the Microsoft Plus Pack for my first experience with a computer, Windows 95. By the way, my first two computers which were my parents' originally (a white Packard Bell desktop then a black Compaq Presario 1220 laptop only used by my dad) ran that operating system without the Plus Pack installed.

I also never got a chance to use Windows 2000 in its heyday, as my family went straight from Windows 98 to XP, so I only got to experience 2000 much later in life. It's a shame though, as Windows 2000 is a really good OS, and much less of a resource hog than XP (and it has a cleaner, nicer interface IMO).

While Windows 2000 was designed for businesses, it was still consumer friendly, even with its multimedia capabilities. But Windows 2000 was not ideal for many old DOS games or old DOS software.

I also missed out on the heyday of Windows 2000 mostly because Windows 95 and Windows XP were working great for me when I was little. I started using Windows 2000 in a virtual machine in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 when its support was coming to an end in 2010 (and to celebrate its 10th anniversary), but I never used it on an actual computer during its time. I agree Windows 2000 was rock solid, though Windows XP, built on its foundation, will always be considered the most iconic Windows operating system of all time. Cool to see Windows 2000 Professional in use on two different computers in one video! Nice work!

I installed Windows 2000 on the very first gaming PC that I built, and I remember very few incompatibilities with games from that era. It didn't run 100% of the games out there, but probably 99%. Even today when retro-gaming, I use Windows 2000. It was so much better than Windows 98 or ME.

I had two computers on my desk during the XP days. One gaming PC running XP and the other for Internet downloads, torrents, AIM, etc running Windows 2000. I have a lot of nostalgia for Win2K.

Windows 2000 was able to run most Windows XP software and drivers, while being slightly faster on older hardware like Pentium II and such. Pretty nice actually.

I have a soft spot for Windows 2k. I used this OS for most of my childhood. Used 95/98 very early on, but my dad got a taste of NT, the future of the Windows platform, and put this on a computer he ultimately intended for me to use. He got burned hard by XP when it came out, like many early adopters did. It wasn't solid until SP1 came out, and from there it earned its reputation as The Legend it's known as since then. But yeah, during 2k's heydey, it was basically no different from XP beyond being lighter. In retrospect, I have to say that for general use nowadays, 2k is in a "jack of all trades, master of none" category. As more versions of Windows sunset (crucially, XP?), XP fits the bill a lot better for setting up a machine now versus 2k. A lot of newer versions of software still support Windows XP today in 2024. On a machine where Windows 2k is a candidate, the machine is better served either by 98 or XP, or even dual booting both of them rather than 2k. Windows XP has far better compatibility with 9x games IME. I still remember quite a few edutainment games I had having problems in 2k, but Just Worked in either XP or 98. I still love 2k. But man, it's a weird thing to look back now and see how things panned out well out of all of these operating systems' heydey.

I remember Windows 2000. The only time I ever got to use it back when it was supported was at my old middle school back in 2001-02 (I later transferred to another middle school that still had older computers running Windows 98 and even some that still had Windows 95, even though it was already out of support at that point back in 2003). My Windows 2000 experience was also very little (my household went straight from both 98 and ME to XP). I eventually got to use Windows 2000 again, this time at home, but through emulation after when it was out of support by 2010. But even I had very little use of 2000. It still was a great version; I just wish it would have gotten a home release as seen in the Codename: Neptune beta. I even like the appearance more than the Luna look from Windows XP. Even Windows NT4 was also pretty good, but again, I still had very little use of it.

(just to add my perspective of those days)(I haven't watched this video yet because it's so real and it's hard on my eyes) I remember when I first found out about Windows 2000 Professional I found a bootleg copy online. I think the first time I installed it it had Chinese text in the operating system. But boy was it spiffy. For someone who knew computers it just felt like a breath of fresh air. Not only was the whole operating system redesigned from the bottom up for security and performance in mind. But if you messed with it you could even get games to run on it which felt like such an accomplishment.

I have never actually had the opportunity to use Win 2000. It's always been Win 98 or ME and and of course all the newer OS versions. I do have a 4100 here that is capable of running 2000 if I could just find an original Resource pack for it. They're like hens teeth though. If I had any nostalgia it would be 98 or ME.

For someone who's not experienced it during its heyday, you absolutely nailed the history of its perception. Almost everyone preferred Windows 2000 over WinXP until, exactly as you said, right around Service Pack 2. :p

Win2k is my favorite OS! Had some most excellent years with Win2k & a friend teaching me about PC's & playing Star Trek Armada & ST Bridge Commander! & GTA III. He moved to XP & then our LAN game would always drop about 45min in. I loved how it would have a miniplayer in the right panel when you just single clicked on a file. Super easy to browse your songs to see what to listen to! XP was too dumbed down. It always asked how to open a disc with different kinds of media on it. Not fun when all my backup discs had mixed media.

I remember using 2000 in school until XP came out. I tried installing it on my Windows 98 computer, but the graphics card didn't support the default XP luna theme and 256 MB of RAM was the most memory it could take. I installed 2000 on it and used it until Windows 7 came out

I was one of the very few people that flat out skipped XP and used Win2K up until support ended in early 2010 and got a Win7 computer (only using XP a few times) No frills, no crazy user interface, it just worked, that's it

I have a lovely Core 2 duo build overclocked to 3.7GHz and a 7900GT, western digital black 10k drives in raid 0. I rehomed it into a Fractal pop mini silent case. It runs Diablo 2, Halo and even the Witcher really nice. The 7900GT loves to overclock. It is a very stable and responsive system. Apps open instantaneously. Only thing i wish it had was a web browser from the last 3 years. The machine also runs ME well too.

It's a bit more bleeding edge, but the Gateway Astro might benefit from ReactOS, which is a clean-room open source variant of 64-Bit XP. Yes, I know the Astro's processor is 32-bit, but the only way I've been able to get ReactOS on a something like a Ryzen system is through x86 emulators like VirtualBox or GNOME Boxes.

This is the first OS that I emulated in Virtual Machine and I always found it to be so stable and sleek and a final version for the previos 9x ones. I've always loved Windows 2000. I am not sure why it was not as popular as windows98

If you install Service Pack 2 or above in 2000 you can get Compatibility Mode working just like Windows XP! It's not built in so you have enable by typing a command in the "Run" window.

I actually installed windows 2000 on a core duo thinkpad and used it in college in around 2013 although support had ended it was surprisingly usable I was the only one running it at that time

Oh man I installed this OS probably almost as much as I installed Win98. People would bring me their machines that were slow out of the box because it came preloaded with XP or Vista + all the bloatware and I would wipe it and put 2000 and it would be much faster. I held on to Win2k myself on my personal machine for a very long time. I sometimes think of building a vintage build, but it's so hard to get the drivers now days.

Love that Windows version more than XP and others. Small, fast and strict. But if you want to install it on a large HDD (with more than 127GB capacity), you need to patch the installation CD (edit some registry values).

Windows 2000 was the best version of NT. Win2K doesn't seem to get as much nostalgia love as XP, 98SE, and even ME do, but it was one of the best versions. MS should have just released a home version of Win2K instead of ME.
