Are they not allowed to blinker the Horse as they do in Horse racing for skittish animals?
@Flower_Dragon_WA6 ай бұрын
Blinkers are used in racing to keep a horse that doesn’t like seeing others with its peripheral vision. It keeps them focused straight ahead and on running the race. I don’t think these horses in this case would necessarily benefit. In my experience with horses they don’t like to be confined in a space as these are especially when under saddle and working. They can get fidgety and feel the need to move, just as we would. I don’t know how long each shift is for a horse, but add the crowds of people, with people constantly coming up and wanting to stand beside them and touch them, I can see why they get tired of standing there. You can say well that’s what they’re trained for, but horses are animals who need exercise and whose natural instinct is flight or fight. While many are docile and you can train them so that they remain calm, I just think about how I would feel if I was to stand in something like say a closet with no door, possibly for hours, all kind of people with all kinds of scents on them sometimes pulling on my clothes as they do the reins of the horses, I might be more than antsy. lol.
@fairygoth-mother73416 ай бұрын
That one horse just didn't like the look of that doorway. Some horses don't. Putting blinkers on might actually make it worse since he would feel like he couldn't keep an eye on something scary -- that's why he kept turning to one side. He wanted to see what was in that space. Horses do not see well directly in front or behind. Also, what they see with one eye doesn't register with the other. So if they see something spooky with their right eye and overcome the fear, when they see it with their left eye they're going to spook as if they've never seen that thing before - because one side of their brain doesn't communicate with the other like ours does. That horse needs some work around that doorway without all the people around. He'll get over the jitters eventually.

You reward good behavior and you ignore bad behavior. That is exactly why they gave him treats when he followed them into the box. Being a new horse with such a crowd in front of you is stressful at first. I bet that if there were fewer people this horse would have no issue going into the box. Just need a bit more training and this beast will be perfect at his job. I think you don't have a lot of experience with animals, do you?

They only stand for an hour and then are off duty for a month. They are not abused.

"All horses shake their heads as a normal response to stimuli, such as a reaction to insects, though this type of shake is usually a horizontal movement." There are diseases that can cause it too but these horses are pampered and looked after like no other.

Do these horses ever get time off to just hit the pasture? Do they ever trade the horses around so they’re not working all the time?

Yes, of course they do. You really should watch, John's uploads. He narrates what's going on. He explains a lot. When he can he provides the names of the horses, too. What all the pomp and circumstance is about and he'll call disruptive tourist out for their bad behaviors.
