We've never seen this done before. The Doctor just invents a new technique on the spot and does it first try. What would you call this?

I just experimented with doing a "return" same as you would on interior trim mouldings. It turned out pretty nice. Cut the 45 bevel and a little return piece. Just glued the returns in, same as would do on interior trim. I did it on the ends of the stair risers, making it so there were no cut edges showing (picture framed treads and tucked side fascia cut edges under treads/behind riser boards). Think that will be my new way of doing composite stairs, they look very nice and finished.

Im re-decking my houseboat exterior decks with Trex, and I HATE HATE HATE the look of the ends. Not sure I will do every board like this, but I will definitely do the furniture pieces that have ends that show. Thanks for this.

A contractor friend did something very similar, but with laminate flooring for a client of his who wanted her black marble threshold to match the rest of the flooring but refused to allow him to chip it away because of the “dust” she said it would create. He wound up running the 1/2” laminate over the table saw blade set to 7/16 height and marking what seemed like 100s of curf cuts leaving just the top of the laminate flooring board. He then used contact cement to secure to the threshold after scuffing it for adhesion. Another great video/tutorial Dr. Keep doing what you do. Keep being you.

Woodworkers use a Dado blade for that. Can get in various widths or even adjustable. Quick, easy, accurate once set up.

Nice experiment. I like it! It's a step above what my friend did today. He simply used the color match paint and painted the ends. I thought it looked really good. But not as nice as this.

Nice. A longer piece can be obtained from the decking board, if the grain direction is matched to the side grain, as opposed to making it look like an end grain cut. And as we know, real wood would not show either grain that we can steal from the top or long edges of the board. Some long square edge deck boards have a smooth finish, only matching the color. Scraps can be used to get these as well. I need to play around a bit on the next job site. Would love to get away from the miter cuts, since they tend to move, no matter how well we do with them. I wonder if you could get a similar result by setting the end of your deck board you need the butt joint on upside down on your chop saw. Set the depth of your saw blade to leave 1/8 inch material. Then cut multitude of cuts in your board moving it a blades width each time until you've cut the thickness of the board length wise. Then use heat gun to bench the left over material over, and glue. Then use flush trim bit router to clean it up.

To make it safer install a zero clearance insert on your table saw. Try the microjig push blocks. The reason the one piece was thicker it was the first pass. On your second pass the product was bent into the blade and thinned out. What about doing your mitre trick. Cut, bend, glue. Looks great!

Or just rip one side and use razor knife to cut one piece from each rip while thin piece is still half attached.

I match Arborcoat solid stain to the color of the decking and paint the endcuts , never got any complains

I'd make a zero clearance insert for the table saw then the rips wouldn't fall in the slot. If you had a bunch of them to do would it be quicker to cut them a little bigger then router off the excess? Or would that mar up the faces of the decking? Just curious because that's how most countertop edge banding is done. Looks great and thanks for sharing your tips, tricks, and ideas with us.

Why don't you just return it? Like when you end baseboard or moldings. Cut 45 degree on the end, then cut a little 1 inch 45 degree piece and glue it on. Would look better, wouldn't have to paint it

They way he did it would look better then doing a return like you are talking about. With a return you will see a cut mark where it was returned. His way is a cleaner look.

Back in my cabinet installation days we used to call that " edge- banding". I've done it many times cutting laminate off countertop scraps to use on backsplash edges like you see in schools and hospitals.

The peice can over lap all around. Then Put blue tape to protect the board. The peice can over lap the top and bottom. Then router the edges off.. break out the file to smooth it off

I think that that is a beautiful idea and have considered it myself prior to watching this video. However the one thing that bugs me out about it is how is it going to hold up in the weather? Is freeze thaw or just rain in general going to blow that thing off of an end grain?... Doctor I think that we need to do a study?

Anyone ever try this glue procedure to join 2 lengths of Trex fascia together? Fascia only comes in 12’ lengths and to avoid butt joints just wondering if it would be feasible.
