Max Sansalone (Dimsunk on YT) does a lot of weird effects on drums, mostly digital stuff. Having the effects be actually physical objects is cool

LOVE THIS!!!! Almost like a exercise in dealing with an unexpected drum mishap, and having to make sound decisions in a live setting!

Gawd, I love you guys! The first time Cody hit that floor tom at the top of the episode, I made some sort of monkey noise of pure delight. It's well-known by now that Cody is the King of Grooves, and some of the ones you came up with in this had me grinning just as big as you were when you were hitting that floor tom. I have some things that I'm working on for a weekend-long jam session with some friends, but when I'm done with that, I promise to take you up on the challenge. Thanks for being one of my favorite YT channels, Ben and Cody!

the @dimsunk arc. Max Sansalone is one of my favorite drummers for the reason that he gets creative with the different sounds he can get out of a kit and still make it enjoyable to listen to.

I love it. I replayed 6:24-6:30 multiple times haha. Unrelated: Sounds Like A Drum video on the Nord Drum series please! We need to pressure Nord into making a 4P. It's such a unique line of percussive instruments. 🥺

I love this! While all of the sounds didn't resonate with me, I totally love the ethos here. I am constantly looking for new sounds and textures for song productions, and I don't see how this is any different than adding one of a bajillion guitar pedals to the chain.

Love it! Anything that gets you out of your usual headspace can be super inspiring and fun!

Great video! Instead of taking off the bottom head, you could alternatively use a mesh head. I use that on my 8 and 10 toms with a clear black dot on top. the 12 has a clear ambassador on top for wider tuning range and a black dot on the bottom.

Great episode!!! Question , In a live small venue setting, how would something like this be accomplished? Would the drummer have an effects rack that they manipulate between songs then send it to the PA? Thinking for smaller bands with no drum techs or sound engineers. Thanks for sharing these ideas!!

Speaking about the vibraslap, I've been dying to know what is this instrument the guy plays at Under the sun live at Paste studios by Tal Wilkenfeld.. The guy plays it like a snare e.g. 1:30 minutes in and has a natural reverb? Wth is this?

Do you have any advice for people who might want to use some of these unconventional sounds in a live setting when we might also need more conventional sounds? I'd really love to branch out and incorporate some of these techniques, but as you said, not every song calls for it.

Just a suggestions here but consider picking up a used, quality mic preamp and discover what that can do for you with the soundman if you have one, expand from there. If no soundman, run your own drum sub-mix at your drums. Also, a lot of "different" sounds now are added with triggers and their controllers. The floor tom here, the first thing I heard was a fast echo with a secondary sound as the echo. Then the effect was explained. Cool.

Explore a hybrid setup, with both conventional acoustic drums and samples through electronic drum pads or through a sample pad. You can discretely place electronics through the kit. I've even seen some drummers adding effects like distortion using a standard guitar pedal that is foot switch operated sending the signal from the mic, through the pedal, to front of house mix.
