This is the essence of amateur work, as my dad was fond of saying. ".. no such thing as can't"

It might help you to know that the mouthpiece lay is measured with auto gauges, the ones used for timing. I’ve forgotten exactly which ones , but you use 4 of them thinnest to thick. The gauges are measured against a piece of glass. If memory serves, the gauges are .004, .025, .068, and .086. A typical mouthpiece may be something around 36-22-11-5 with a tip opening of 104. All in millimeters. Regarding the rails, it’s best to keep the tip rail and side rails no wider than an American penny. Too wide and it makes for a slow response and difficult articulation.

I have used these and found it surprisingly difficult to remove minute amounts to keep the sides equal.

@@colinmaceke7474 the removal of material is accomplished by drawing the mouthpiece at varying angles on very fine sandpaper atop a glass plate. 800 grit or higher. The gauges are used to measure your work.

Believe me, I’ve done all of that. Getting the curve on the lay being the hardest. Even the smallest change can make a difference to the sound quality, the attack and thus the hardness of the reed. I think what puts me off using it is seeing the condensation through the acrylic! Thank you for your advice. Maybe I’ll have another ago if ever I finish the Baldwin.

Thanks for the cool mouthpiece demo I used to work as a plastic fabricator of plastics. Never thought of making one out of acrylic. Maybe delrin? I have played the clarinet since I was ten years old I still play at 62 . How did the mouth piece play? Keep up the great work.

It had quite a reasonably light feel to it but the quality of the sound and ease of playing was all down to the setting of the lay. At one point I got it so wrong I could hardly play a note. Using a feeler gauge and filing a bit off at a time is the only way I got it working to anything like satisfaction. I could easily spend time fiddling with it but I seem to have so many other interest.

No, I don’t sell things. My KZbin channel is just about the things I make for my own interest. As I play the clarinet, I thought it would be fun to make one for myself.

@@colinmaceke7474 я думаю , что это достойное дело! Буду смотреть, что вы ещё сделаете. Удачных экспериментов!
