Just thought that I would also mention that i also designed and built a very handy and valuable chicken/rabbit tractor. It raised up and down on an old pair of wheelchair wheels for easy moving. It housed rabbits on the top floor and chickens on the bottom. It fit between the rows in my narrow-rowed gardens. The chickens took care of all the between row weeding and the rabbits AND chickens took care of the fertilizing. None of the animal waste ever got on the produce directly either! Worked wonderfully!

Don't be discouraged if ur garden doesn't produce well this year ur soil may be better established the 2nd or 3rd year. My 2nd season beds are better established than my new ones made this year, one trick I discovered was planting peas in between other crops. The new bed w peas is doing far better than the neighboring new bed with NO peas. Self-sufficient Me on KZbin is an Australian gardener that has a FANTASTIC set of garden beds that are raised WAY up. He followed instructions with his kit and actually prefers the beds that have logs in the bottom as fill and drainage, rather than the beds that had gravel and crushed granite in the bottom to provide drainage as the garden kit suggested.

Have you tried container potatoes? I have 5 crops growing. 4 in ground, and my experiment in the 20 gallon container. When I harvest I can dump them onto a tarp, and sort.

Just found this channel and holy cow, you all are almost 100% self supportive with your food supply. I love it. I only do cows and may get some pigs pretty soon . I had chickens and turkeys but the predators ate them too fast to make it worth while. Cattle are social animals and really need other cows around. They get attached to the other herd mates. I guess the goats provide that for Hope right now. This is my new favorite channel and cant wait for Hope's new baby calf !

We here used to grow one acre of potatoes and I remember my dad splitting potatoes in half with no growth output concerns. If you sow large potatoes you will find you will get more plant growth however the potatoes underneath the soil will be more but very small . Love watching your videos and especially about your quail.

When the calf is born make sure you and your family get a little of the 1st milk as this has strong medicinal qualities ( stocks your immune system ) Loved seeing all the animals

The best harvest I've ever gotten with potatoes is planting them in a pile of compost on top of the ground and then covering with old hay. No weeds...no digging...no watering. Mulch has changed everything for us. HUGE harvests. Tons of mulch also does wonders for hard soil.

That's the same method we use, here in the Ozark mountains, but we use broken down straw. Purchase it in the fall, add bone meal, water it thoroughly and allow it to break down all winter. Come spring we pull it apart and put the potatoes on top of the laid down straw. Then top it off with more straw all summer and we get huge yields.

@Aida A we didn't have an issue with mold at all. A few things sprouted in the straw but that's not a big deal. You don't have to water too much as the straw holds in a lot of moisture.

Sometime, try tractor tire potato planting. You plant the potato and as the plant grows, keep adding soil to mound them. When ready to harvest, pull the tire up, turn it over and there are your potatoes. Easy and productive use of space.

Picked up my new chicks this morning... a mixed batch. Haven't had a flock in about three years and have missed the joy of chickens. Thank you for re-inspiring me to get my little homestead up and running again. The new greenhouse went up last weekend and is slowly being filled with all the veggie seedlings that are in the house...have to be careful here in Maine, if you aren't happy with the weather, wait a minute and it will change. This year I used weed fabric like you did and have had great results. As one who dreads weeding, this was fantastic. I even used it for beets and carrots, they are terrific. Enjoy your garden...I do.

We love Beefsteak tomatoes. They are great for slicing for sandwiches, as they aren't so juicy to make your bread or buns so wet. Most others are best for sauces and canning. Love you guys.

Hi Kevin and Sarah, I have seen a friend of my in-laws planted potatoes in hay. just place the potato barely in the ground and cover with a layer of hay. then as the plant grows, keep adding hay. No digging when harvesting, just pull back the hay, and there the potatoes are. Also try planting sunflowers along the edge of your corn bed. Take care ...m.

The gardens are really looking great. I have raised beds 2 little ones 4 x 8 on Legs so they are waist high. Much easier for me at 81. I have some beets, red and green bell peppers, snap peas, tomatoes and parsley. In large bins I have Yukon Gold potatoes and a russet potato. I am praying for a good yield, this is my 3rd. try. Last year crows ate everything.

BUT the turkey (male) scares me and he is so massive. Also they always seem to be like laughing at you when your doing chores. Love seeing the starting of the plantings. My question on the ground cover.......when harvesting the potatoes....they come up in a good sized clump of soil and potatoes, are the holes in the ground cover going to allow for that?

@@kimdewbre8859 they will probably do like they've done in the past and remove the ground cover before they harvest the potatoes. By the time of harvest all the greenery dies back and the row cover just gets pulled up and off then they gently dig out the potatoes.

I was thinking the other day about how your potatoes were doing. I am doing golden Yukon potatoes in buckets and I did the whole potato in the bucket and had added dirt until 1 inch from top and added mulch and they are sitting in the garden next to the new raised bed. Illinois weather hasn't been nice enough to plant in garden yet. Our greenhouse is over flowing with starts from seeds. Love seeing all the animals and of course the gardens! Thank you for sharing !

Howdy from central Michigan .🤠 The same thing happened with our raised beds . Used the cardboard but that seemed to be so labor intensive every year . They were completely overgrown and we didn't use them for awhile. This year we are reclaiming them for our Victory Gardens ! We are going to try the ground fabric this year as well. We have the exact same problem with weed growth. And animal issues too. However, we have to fence every garden because of deer . Our herds are huge and they will eat everything in their paths. Thanx for all the great info. Nice to know we are not the only ones.... for awhile it sure felt like it . Kudos to you for putting perches in for those chicks. I always think it is better for them to be able to get up off the ground. Keep on keep'n on ! Happy Homesteading 🌞
