Does anyone remeber: an owner of a big successful machine shop(?) out in California made a dual rotor helicopter that he said anyone could learn ro fly in less than an hour. he referred to it as a commuter helicopter for traveling the airways between cars & airplanes. it was featured on Discovery TV probably over 5 years ago?

This contra rotating configuration is for a reason you won't get any simpler than this, the gearbox inbetween the rotors is a reversing unit for the lower rotor only, the top rotor is direct from the drive.

Quite possibly the most well flown home-made aircraft that I have ever seen, great job, however, the cyclic of the blades puts them too close to eachother for me to deem this safe to fly. I bet larger rudders would be more responsive and placing the rotors further apart would make this safer to fly. Love it!
@SmoochyRoo2 жыл бұрын
@Eddie Hitler I assumed they're fixed in collective pitch but is there no cyclic? He seems to steer using a stick for a reason so there's clearly some control scheme involved that makes the rotors tilt with their tips nearing one another
@franciscoignaciodasilva17204 жыл бұрын
Nice and cool! But, how about the autorotation, beeing a fixed pitch rotor?
@Veldtian13 жыл бұрын
I read it was supposed to have a ballistic parachute installed in a production variant, also how many times do you see a helicopter successfully auto rotate to a safe landing, virtually never, that's because the only time its possibly is due to a perfect engine out scenario with a perfect altitude and no other mechanical complications effecting the incident - which hardly ever happens. It's mostly wishful thinking and a coping strategy.

@Veldtian13 жыл бұрын
The foot pedals control hard left and right turns via the rudders at the rear of the rotor wash and also the left and right tilt of the rotor head 'swash plate' equivalent device just underneath the rotors.
@cloudusterable3 жыл бұрын
Surley there is no "swash plate " as we know it Jim, the whole rotor system tilts sideways or forward and back, there are no pitch changing.

WITH A FIXED PITCH ROTOR SYSTEM YOU are betting on an absolutely 100%reliable engine running, never ever ever fail, there will always be something, out of fuel, a bad spark plug, any hiccup absolutely guarantees a sad day for your family and anyone watching, any machine you build should be capable of auto rotation,
