This is an experimental tie-dye design that's currently a work-in-progress... The tie pattern is just a standard spiral; but, the dying method is the first attempt at creating a specific look. Unfortunately, as typically occurs with first attempts, the results were not as I had hoped/imagined. This method will be refined and more attempts will be made until the final result is a success.

Was the black dye thickened as well? I'm wondering if you thickened it more, if less would soak in to the fibers. Or a shorter time in the black dye. Let it sit for an hour, then pull it out and cover it over night. It's got my brain working on this one!

It looks great! Question..... I began to bleach tie dye a black hoodie (work hoodie). The orange brown look was awful, so I soaked the whole hoodie in bleach with the thought of color dyeing it after. Now the hoodie is grey with orange and brown splotches. Still not very pretty. I thought of spider dyeing it but am unsure and a little scared since I wear it at work. Do you have any ideas or tips I could use to make this pretty???
@CasualCollisions

Black almost always bleaches into orange-ish brown. You can dye over the color; but, it'll be the combination of those colors as the result.

I really like it even though your not to keen on it. I myself have employed a similar way of applying the black on my spider t shirts with a positive outcome and I have found myself saving the run off dye from other t shirts to use in my black bath which achieves 2 things firstly I save on dye and secondly it mostly gives me a pleasant surprise because I never know what colour it will turn into

I use Guar Gum; but, most people use Sodium Alginate. There's really no difference between them. Guar Gum: amzn.to/3KkyEQz Sodium Alginate: amzn.to/3I8gOye Mix the thickening agent with the water until fully dissolved. Wait about 15 minutes to check the consistency of the water. Add more thickening agent if you think it looks too thin and wait again. Repeat until it's the consistency you need. Add the procion dye to the thickened water. I usually start with about 1/4 tsp of guar gum into 12oz of water and work from there. #AffiliateLink

I love that you question the process and try to get what you plan, but sometimes I like that the results are totally unexpected. That is the mystery and the addiction of tie dye. Experimenting in tie dye, is like trying to figure out the secrets of the wizard; the whole understanding is always a little beyond to reach. Your work is amazing, and very inventive. Thank you for all the work.

If I only show the front of the shirt it's because the back is virtually identical to the front. There are a few shirts where I've shown both - such as the paw print and lotus designs - since the backs are a different pattern than the front.

I love your experiments! Yeah, I'm with you, if it doesn't look like what I was going for it's a fail of my idea. The item might look just fine to others, but it's a bit disappointing when things don't work out the way your brain hopes they will. Speaking of brains, I hope you're doing much better health-wise. I'm kind of going back and forth all over the place with your videos so I haven't seen any kind of an update.

I agree with you. Failure is awesome. I learn so much from my "failures." I don't learn much from successes, but they are fun for the moment. I prefer the learning phase. Nobody ever taught me that failure was a bad thing, so I grew up comfortable with it. I hope more people teach their children to value learning above success. Carol Dweck's excellent book "Mindset" goes into the principles behind this. Bravo for your efforts. Generally speaking, I find creative minds have a very high tolerance for failure and it serves them well.

@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
I use Guar Gum or Sodium Alginate. At least one of those should be available in the canning section of your local grocery store. If not, they're available on Amazon at: Guar Gum: amzn.to/2UiOS4d Sodium Alginate: amzn.to/2YmIhHt The ratio is about 1/4 tsp thickening agent to 16oz of water. Stir until it's completely mixed and then wait 15 minutes. You may want to start with 1/8 tsp to 16oz of water first and then adjust based on how thick you need the dye to be.

does flour or cornstarch can be used to thickened the dye instead of guar gum???
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
I've tried cornstarch in the past just to see how well it would work. And, it's a horrible mess to clean out of the shirt. I had to scrub the entire shirt with a toothbrush to get everything out. So, I wouldn't recommend using it or flour. If you're in the US, Guar Gum should be readily available in the canning section of your local grocery store or there's always Amazon.

I just did my first two t-shirts. After rinsing, I have them hanging up to air dry. My question is how to get the dye to really set, and how do I wash them after the dye is completely set
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
The dye "sets" by chemically bonding with the fibers of the fabric. I do a single wash with the freshly rinsed tie dyes by themselves - after that, we're an extremely lax household when it comes to "sorting" laundry. Basically - we don't sort clothes. *Everything* gets washed together and I've never had an issue with bleeding.
