A how-to on the folding and tying of a side-zipper style tie dyed shirt.
Have fun experimenting with the design!
The $955 value in the title refers to the amount I've received from monetization of this video since it was published. The totals were last updated on 8/3/2022.
I'll update the title each month or so to show the current income from this video.
Note: This is not typical of the monetization I receive from the tie dye videos. There are five videos that have earned more than this; but, the overwhelming majority are much, much, much less.

It's on the "to do" list. I should be making a new "batch" of videos over the next couple of weeks and that will be one of the one's included. (I make a batch of 6-12 videos over 1-2 weeks and then drop a video each week until those are all public and then do another batch. So, this one should come out relatively soon.)

Oh boy this is wonderful. Love it. If I might trouble you with a question, when you wash in the washer at the end... is there need for salt for further dye setting, and do you repeat wash until the water is clear? Thank you for all you do. Enjoy your vids so much.
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
No, I just wash it with an extra rinse cycle and dry. I've never had any of my work bleed after a single wash cycle. But, I'd recommend you test your shirts to make sure it's the same case for you.

How do you thicken the black dye? And is it thickened to not blend with the other colors?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
I use guar gum as it's readily available at most grocery stores. It's thickened to not blend with other colors as well as to limit it's travel through the material so that you have more control over the placement of the dye.

Virtually all of the other tutorials on ice-dying put the ice down first and then sprinkle the dye on top of that. I was glad to see you do it this way, as it seems intuitively to be the better method. Any thoughts on the difference between the two? Have you done both and prefer this for some reason? Thanks! Beautiful work and great, instructive videos.
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
Dye first results in better control over the placement of the dye and you can keep the dye within the specific tied areas you want. Ice first results in a more organic/flowing design with the loss of the control over where the dye "lands" on the actual tied design. I use both methods - it just depends on what I'm looking to create. Though, I tend towards dye first as I prefer the control.

@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
I do not bag any of the shirts during the process; but, I also live in the South and the humidity rarely drops below 55%, so it's exceedingly rare for the humidity to be low enough for the material to dry out during the process.

What color dyes do you think are an absolute necessity for people just beginning to use powder dyes?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 6 жыл бұрын
You can never go wrong with primary colors: red (Chinese Red), yellow (lemon yellow), and blue (turquoise). You can add in black to add deep contrast with Better Black (it's the only black that works with cold water). Better Black is a 1 tsp:1 ounce ratio dye compared to most other dyes that are 1 tsp: 4 ounces (and turquoise containing dyes that are 1 tsp: 2 ounces water), so it's usually a good idea to buy Better Black in at least a 1 pound jar. Beyond that, begin to add to your collection with colors that you like. The "primary" Procion dyes that are available from Dharma are: lemon yellow, golden yellow, deep yellow, deep orange, light red, fuchsia red, grape, sky blue, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, and turquoise. "Primary" Procion colors are the dyes are the pure unmixed single-hue dyes that will not split when ice-dyed.

Won't the dye come off if I wash it in the washing machine? Can someone help me? I'm planning to do it and I just saw something called "the dye stabilizer" so maybe I should also use that!?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
No, if you use a quality Procion dye, it will not wash out. Some of my son's shirts have been washed over 100 times and there is very little fading. You don't need a "dye stabilizer" with Procion dye. The soda ash bath prior to dyeing the material allows the Procion dye to chemically and physically bond with the fibers of the material.

This looks so cool and beautiful! Really wish I could give it a go but I have tremors and nerve damage that makes gathering the fabric impossible like this. Kinda the reason I like tie dye, my tremors tend to make funky designs and it is hard to mess up classic tie dye designs 😂. This was really stunning though and would make a great dress or even 2 piece crop top and skirt set. ✌❤

When you say you are putting it I. The machine, what do you do exactly?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 6 жыл бұрын
I put the shirt in the washing machine - typically with several other tie dyes that have had their first wash-out. I use regular laundry soap and set the washing machine to "normal" with an extra rinse. After that completes, I run move the shirts to the dryer with a few dryer balls and a towel to speed up the drying cycle. When they are dry, I iron them just before they're photographed as the a freshly ironed tie dye will photograph with darker/more vibrant colors.

They should have all been mentioned during the video. If they weren't, the best I would guess is: lemon yellow, bright green, turquoise, brilliant blue, chinese red, bright orange, and possibly fire red. All the videos I've published in the past 12 months have the dye colors visible on the video during the dye process as it would just be a guess after I put them away for each shirt.

That's a different way to do it, and wouldn't crushed ice work better than cubed ice?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
I've always thought of our ice as quarter-moon not cube and while it can be annoying to place it at times, it far less annoying than spending the time to pull out the snow cone machine to grind ice into a fine powder. Would crushed ice work better with some designs? Yes; and, in some videos I do use crushed ice. But, that's not something most people have readily available in their homes -- at least in the quantity required for most ice dyes. So, I tend to stick with the ice out of the ice maker.

The water goes through the sewer line and directly to the water treatment facility that's less than 5 miles away. After treatment it returns to a lake that's within the same 5 miles followed by a trip back to a water treatment facility and redistributed back into the homes.
