Welcome to my first real video since my return to KZbin! In this one, I analyse a form of video game sequel that doesn't really build on concepts established in the prequel, but instead takes things in a different direction entirely. But that doesn't mean it's bad, on the contrary in fact! My 3$-patrons were able to watch this video one week ago, as that tier gives you early access to new videos. In fact, they're able to watch next week's video today as well! If you're interested, consider helping me out! www.patreon.com/GermanPeter Also, please consider sharing this video with other people if you've enjoyed it :) Thank you!

This video really makes you think about its topic! I'll be thinking about experimental sequels for a while after watching this :D And that ending... man. It resonated with me. It's good (and important!) that we actively search for what's fulfilling and makes us happy. I'm really glad you're back, Peter. Genuinely. I'll be SO looking forward to watching your content again, your creations are very valuable and I hope they bring you happiness and recognition, because they really deserve it. To me one of the highlights of this type of sequel is Jak II. Not only because of the darker, edgier atmosphere and story, the GTA-style city driving or the guns, but because of how many of these changes actually build upon the previous game. The platforming is still the same as in Jak 1, with the same moves as before, and the gunplay is meant to be combined with the older melee combat: for example, firing after punching an enemy to instantly rev up your minigun, using your shotgun to boop enemies off the map, or performing the infamous air spin attack trick. It takes many ideas from the first game and combines them with recent trends to create a game that is unlike any other, and even if it doesn't work sometimes (unfair checkpoint scarcity in some levels, excessive driving from mission to mission) I still love it for what it brought to the table.
@jylietmaddyzpires24422 жыл бұрын
yes!!!!!!!!!!!!! such a good point. i played the jak games with my cousin and brother growing up. jak and daxter we beat and left it alone, but jak ii was the game we played every single time together for like eight years. the different locations were much more interesting and the story was way better than its prequel. any thoughts on jak iii? at the time, i thought it was just meh, and i never beat it unlike the other two games. it just felt like jak ii in a more boring and desolate area for a while.

I think my favorites are the kind of games that have a little bit of both be effectively keeping all the old good stuff but modifying or adding so much more you can't really call it either of the first two sequel types you mentioned but it's not really full experimental.

I think my favorite experimental sequel is Sonic Advance 3. It’s the only game in the Sonic series where you pick 2 out of the 5 total characters to combine as a team and get unique ability combinations. And to compliment this, the level design was course-corrected from Advance 2’s downward slope levels encouraging blitzing through them without a second thought, into huge sprawling levels with lots of chao to find to reward exploration. It’s also the only Sonic game where the fastest character to pick is Tails! (with Sonic as the partner of course)
@MetaKaios2 жыл бұрын
That feature is from Knuckles' Chaotix, though.

Don't mind me, just commenting to boost the algorithm for this KZbinr I've been following for years, and that I want to support now more than ever. For real tho, I've always loved your videos on Team Fortress 2, but I saw a lot of potential with the creepy Super Mario 64 one, and I'm glad you're going that route, don't get discouraged by the inevitable lower views, as long as you do what you love that's all that matters. I really enjoy your new style of content and furthermore, fully support your decision to stop doing videos on tf 2. While it is a game that many fondly remember it's lack of updates means very quickly, one will run out of tf 2 content, depending on the style of tf 2 content they produce. My main point is, tf 2 is getting well.......stale, so it's good that you made the switch in content! And lastly, keep up the good work man!👍

I'm only at game 1 but I just wanna say I think when 3D games were first made and companies wanted to cash in on 3D, a lot of them made a sequel of the third kind - for example, super mario world to super mario 64, very big difference even excluding the 3D movement and environments

I was impressed at how much closer the ties between Mario 2 USA has with Mario 3 than I originally understood. You still pick up things (before enemies then to shells and boxes) to attack but now have the option to jump or otherwise attack. Along with guiding the movement to be "primarily horizontal, with vertical secondaries" instead of the more "all up or all across" that Mario 2 had. My poster child for "It's doesn't feel like an expected sequel but it's still a great game" is Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. Ignoring the artstyle (something I still can't really enjoy but will tolerate due to the Grid building matching the blocky visual), the main aspect of playing the game is still very fun. However, there are an incredibly amount of things that, as a sequel, do not work well. Sadly, I am not able to fully articulate those at the moment, and definitely not concise enough to fit within a decent KZbin Comment.

Can I say as an avid Pikmin 2 enjoyer that I highly disagree but also approve your likeness of the sequel's changes. The reason i disagree is because you mark pikmin 2 as the "odd one out" when in reality, all 3 games are vastly different from one another. Taking it's little brother pik 3 into account, it does take back the premise of the first game but it also uses mechanics from 2 while completely overhauling the physics/pikmin behavior/controls in general. Each entry has a unique flavor that takes a bit from each predecessor and mixes it up. Making all of them offer you a "best version" based on your preference alone. Which is why I appreciate all three to be honest.

Star Fox Adventures followed the path of Super Mario Bros 2, though not nearly as successfully. I still find it to be a bit of an enjoyable game in spite of its rushed production and flaws, and it's still playable unlike the disaster that was Star Fox Zero (you listed one category as sequels that improves upon previous iterations. This game screws up upon previous iterations).

In the Kingdom Rush series the second game was pretty much more of the same, but much much better. Regarded as the best game of TD series Third game was... ok-ish. They tried to change a lot of basic things, but they didn't really succeeded at making them feel good, tho they still kept the basics from first two games. It was pretty good game, tho I prefer the first two over it The fourth part is... Horrible. They went with the experimental sequel type for that. They really changed a lot of things from first two games, but the problem was - While the changes were pretty good ideas, the game ended up horribly unbalanced, with it's difficulty curve looking like a heath attack. They failed game balance so bad that they literally broke the entire game by it. And then there's the non td game which from what I know is great And the junkworld which we don't talk about because it dropped to even worse lows.

all of them are nintendo... do you think MGSPW or MGS2 would fit in the experimental video game category? MGSPW: A somewhat major title to MGS released after MGS4 but for PSP exclusively at first but later for XBox 360 and PS3 MGS2: The character switch after Tanker and the AI stuff that distorted with the player's perception of the game in the end

A great topic. Another example would be Final Fantasy 2. In that game, unlike any RPG, stats are based on actions. Everything levels on its own. This game too, is seen as the black sheep of the series. It's so.... different. Is it good? Pft, I don't think it's good. Why? The weakest enemies are just as useful as the strong ones. Have high defense? Attack yourself and now you have alot of HP, and the attacker gets more strength
