With cases expected to triple over the next 30 year, Dr. Neal Barnard shares the steps you can take to lower your risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He shares the foods that are most likely to cause it and those that can help protect your brain.
He joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll with his expert advice for preventing Alzheimer's disease and keeping your mind functioning at a high level throughout your golden years.

I’m reading his book Your Body in Balance. I learned so much about my body that I could have used earlier in my life and about men’s health too. Included in the back of the book is a suggested meal plan and recipes. A godsend for someone who decided to go vegan after being a wishy-washy vegetarian for decades. I needed to have meals to replace mostly dairy. Meat wasn’t such an issue. I will make learning the new recipes a priority. It’s easy to fall off the wagon so to speak if you don’t put something better for you in place.

@@divalivingston1664 i live in indonesia so its very easy to get a good quality coconut milk here and i make oatmilk every day , i have found it so easy to make things creamy and and cheesy delicious with different nuts and flavors...soy sauce with coconut yoghurt is,fantastic ... cashew nut and raw onion makes the most delicious creamy cheesy alfredo sauce .. well.done for going vegan ..for me its also a powerful political action that we can live well without deliberately taking or exploiting the lives of others ..i believe we can truly live and let live in a genuine democracy if we are willing to make changes that surprisingly turn out to be more pleasurable in the end than what we think we are giving up .. i love dr barnard because he is caring about all of life ..i love that so much!

Thank you Dr. Barnard for being a physician who is not on the take from the junk food industry. There are a lot of You Tube videos that are telling people lies and a lot of physicians doing infomercials to sell little pills filled with sand instead of talking about a sensible plant based diet. You are a shining star in the dark of ignorance.

Hi.I'm new to the EXAM ROOM and thanks health education that you are providing. However I wonder if you are stating that the Low-Carb,, KETO,, & BULLET PROOF lifestyles that so many people are having such feelgood results are totally out of their gourds?? I felt great on KETO but had trouble sticking with it. My weight, blood pressure dropped which of course helped how I felt: physically, emotionally, mentally. I am finding I.F. more realistic. At 75 I still crave my potatoes and occasional desserts so switching to a Vegan diet is unlikely to happen but perhaps I will attempt to have a few more vegetarian meals each week. Please wish me luck . LOVE MY DAIRY AND MEAT 🍖 SO this will be a CHALLENGE ! THANKS FOR THE GREAT PODCAST LOUISE

To the host Chuck, Avocados do have fat / cholesterol but plant cholesterol is totally different from that of animals. Humans do not absorb plant cholesterols 💯% - we excrete it as technically plant cholesterol isn't as acceptable. So no need to adulterate your guacamole as it's healthy. However, if for weight loss reasons, then yes .

Vegan doesn't mean as much as people think when speaking in terms of diet. Oreos and potato chips are vegan (not saying that's what you are eating) but they are far from healthy. First, look out for palm and coconut oils in the packaged food you buy and avoid them like the plague. They are ridiculously high in saturated fat. Limit your consumption of any oil and salt alike as fat and sodium contribute to high blood pressure. You could try swapping in potassium chloride salt in exchange or in addition to your sodium chloride salt. Potassium seems to have the opposite effect on blood pressure of making it lower. I've seen it work for many people who are doing a lot of good things but just can't get that final bit of blood pressure down. Of course you'd want to make sure it doesn't interfere with any medication you're taking. Lastly, limit your consumption of packaged processed foods in general except whole grain bread, whole grain low fat tortillas, etc. The predominant source of your fuel for your body should come from whole plant foods. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and small quantities of nuts. Bonus: To spice your health up a notch you could try making gold milk from unsweetened almond or oat milk with more or less than a teaspoon of turmeric powder and a pinch of black pepper to maximize absorption (Powerful antiinflammatory + antioxidants.) Also find ways to incorporate vinegar, ginger, and garlic into your food. I couldn't tell you what their relationship is to the problems that you're facing off of the top of my head but what I can tell you is that worst case scenario they're delicious and they'll just make you healthier in general. Hope this helps.

The more dietary fat you eat the more plaque your arteries will have. The more saturated fat you eat the more risk for certain cancers and Alzheimer's you will have. Also high fat diets harm the liver (like how the French turn living ducks' livers into fois gras). I want to be thin and healthy not thin and sick. Of course you won't get these illnesses right away but you will pay when you are middle aged like me. I got cancer and liver disease from high fat low carb.

Low fat diet = low slow feath 😁😉 These guys just keep talking about eating all kinds of cooked crap (beans are deadly btw 🙂) and blame the meat their ancestors survived and even thrived on just because they have a public sick enough to listen to any and anyone ... How you think matters way morethan what you eat. But if you avoid eating meats or mainly meats then you'll get to need this kind of "advice" and get to eat a low flat plant based prison diet 😉

What is he talking about ?! Eating fat, even plant based is bad ? Essential fatty acids anyone ? A lot of people loose weight on low or zero carb approaches BTW. And keep it off for a good while longer 🙂 How about ancestral lifestyle inevitably containing or even based on animal products of all kinds (fresh or not) ? We are here because of our not si inspired ancestors to go cook toxic plants and soak antinutrient rich nuts and seed or make oils etc. This vegan way of avoiding disease is not natural nor proven to be the best we could do to maximize our healthspan and youthful look both at once. Théories on mice or microscope samples and even large studies on humans are ok but still far from tbe truth

It is natural for us to be primarily plant based. Our ancestors did not eat a lot of meat (except maybe during the ice ages). Our bodies are more like those of an herbivore than carnivore (long GI tract, teeth for chewing, amylase production,…). I agree that some diets are too extreme, But animal products are definitely not necessary.

I think Dr. Barnard recommends avoiding lots of oils because they have so many calories per serving (twice as much as grains and fruits by dry weight) that it is very easy to gain weight with lots of oils, cheese, and butter. Dr. Barnard points out that even if you do not use fats and oils in cooking, you do get the necessary fatty acids from vegetable and other plants. In fact, it is nearly impossible to get less than 10% of your calories from fats/oils because they are present in virtually all plant food. Dr. Barnard recommends eating ground flax seed on your cereals, etc. because this has healthful alpha linolenic acid and other beneficial fatty acids. In fact, the only diet every proven to reduce the clogging of articles is plant based, as shown by Dr. Dean Ornish in San Francisco, CA and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, formerly at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. On the other hand, if one eats lots of meat, especially processed meat daily, there is a higher risk of heart disease, is there not? You may want to google Dr. Ornish or Dr. Esselstyn to learn more about these benefits. Dr. Ornish's approach to plant based eating for heart disease patients has now been approved by Medicare due to its efficacy and proven ability to help overcome heart disease!

You sound like a deep thinker and that's commendable Adrian. However, you need to go way, way back to the beginning of humans. We did not go to the supermarket and buy steaks and chicken and pork chops or bacon. Most of the hunter/gatherers were more gatherers since most of our early ancestors did not have guns, could not run 30 mph and faster, could not fly and could not stay under water for more than about 3 minutes without inhaling a snoot full of water and mud.So we were mostly gatherers. We ate greens, nuts, fruits, seeds, and the very occasional bird or fish that we could catch with a stick or swat with a heavy palm frond. We exercised almost all the time when it was light and slept when it was dark. So that is our heritage. Now we drive to work and drive home, eat salty chips at our desk, gobble up candy bars on our way home from work, make a processed dinner if we are single or cook dinner or go out to eat with the family if we have a family and our relatives, spouses and kids are mostly getting fatter by the month and year. So we survived and prospered on a diet of mostly veggies and fruits and seeds and nuts for the first thousand or so years of life. That's the type of diet that we should still be eating. Even though our brain has developed into this great invention machine, our bodies are still born with very long intestines that do not rid us of animal products because we need fiber in our food (leaves, grains etc.) and we can't out run a deer or even a cow so we do very poorly on an animal based diet. We can't fly or swim and catch a bird or fish and our teeth rot away because we eat highly sugared and processed foods. A cat or lion or tiger is a carnivore and everything about carnivores is designed to kill and eat other animals, like deer, sheep, goats etc. But we are designed to eat things that grow in the ground and fall off trees. We are designed to pull and climb and eat a plant based diet. Sorry, you just flunked human culinary history. But you are probably (I hope) a nice person.
