#1 rule never toss Husband items. His closet side of over flowing. Him purge, no. I grouped same color shirts together. Grey, Blue, Black. Turned the hangers backwards. After 4 weeks. Moved one shirt from each color, hanger still backwards. Moved it to other side of his coats. After 6 months he commented that I threw his shirt away. Nope. They are right here and you haven’t been shirtless. Welcomed him to return the shirts to the other side. He didn’t. Then the shirts were in the donation bin - 18 shirts. Not placed by me.

Were the shirts you moved ones that you know not to be worn often? I’m m just imagining if someone relocated my things, I’d be searching for it and wondering where it was. Obviously what you did here didn’t seem to bother him though and eventually he decluttered it himself. Congrats on that.

I want to thank you for your supportive and encouraging videos-they are helping me so much. Yesterday I went into our spare bedroom, also known as The Storage Room, armed with two large black bags and determination. I started filling the bags with things to donate-yes, all perfectly good items that I had spent money on-while literally saying out loud “things are meant to be USED” over and over. 😂 I’m going to do a brief Time Will Tell with both full bags but I will take them to the donation center soon. Thank you again for giving me the permission and support to finally say goodbye to these items.

Decluttering win last week -- I had "two" matching china cabinets that sat next to each other. They were always very helpful in storing wine glasses, serving dishes and platters, Xmas dishes, etc. I was really not happy with how they looked and wanted to downsize but avoided it as I knew I would have to make hard downsizing decisions. Finally cut all the "stuff" in half and donated a ton, AND then got rid of one of the entire china cabinets. Feels soooo good to have addressed a hard layer and to get rid of a major piece of furniture. After all, how many wine glasses does one really need? In counting, I still have about 24 in the remaining cabinet -- MORE than I will ever need at one time! Same with serving platters. I was able to move the remaining china cabinet to a more inconspicuous location and opened up a ton of room! Thanks for all your inspiring motivation, Dawn!

I absolutely love the feeling of decluttering and letting go. In the past, I have gotten too crazy with it and removed items from the home that I thought other family members were not using, but later found out they were hurt by my actions. So I try to encourage now by leading by example and offering gentle suggestions, but ultimately letting others make their own choices. I have had to work hard on not taking it personally or pushing too hard when others are resistant. ❤

Really liked this longer format! Stopped on and off to to tasks but listened to the end! Resounding YES on restaurant kitchens! If you've ever worked opening or closing shifts you know exactly what the benefits of stream lining are! I also wanted to mention that us "baby boomers" were likely raised by "depression babies" who passed on their scarcity mindset on to us. I moved past that decades ago and it was a challenge to get those messages out of my head, though some proved very practical and useful to this day. I say declutter those messages, keep what works and toss the rest! Fabulous presentation today Dawn and I really appreciated where you gave us environmentalists permission to literally just bag it, get it out of your life, and move on! We can always do better as we move forward with a mind that is refreshed!

I realized I had given my son way too much when he decided to move south with just what fit in his car....we took load after load to the thrift shop, plus multiple car loads to the dump, literally kicking furniture apart to fit in my trunk! I took home presents with tags still on them. His new apartment is minimal, light and cheerful, and I KNOW he is happier and more relaxed. Lesson learned!!

I simplified my kitchen this year, and it's just SO much easier - in EVERY way.... I got rid of two shelves of cookbooks that I never use anymore, 1/2 my plates, 1/2 my mugs, LOTS of randomness and excess.. Although I like to bake, because nothing was together and easy to assemble, baking was a chore and cleaning up was a chore... Now, all the baking and spices are in one big cabinet. I SEE what I have. I'm not buying duplicates. I know where to find everything and more importantly, where it goes when I'm done..... Thank you for the inspiration, Dawn!

I came to the realization recently that it's OK if i run out of something. As costco-trained Americans i think we are scandalized to think we may not have something we need- especially if we may not have cash to buy it before the next paycheck. But really, if it turns out I ran out of something, i can figure something else out or do without for a little while. It will really be OK.

You've inspired me once again. I promoted facial cleaning supplies I don't like for my face into hand care products. I do the same thing with products because a moisturizer is a moisturizer and soap is soap. I also use moisturizer/lotion on the ends of my hair and as a smoothing cream to smooth out frizz for hair styling. Also olive oil to cleanse my face and remove makeup or lotion if I’m temporarily out of oil. I use lanolin nipple cream I got for free from the hospital as a chapstick it’s the best chapstick I’ve used!

I just decluttered most of the house, just my son’s room and conservatory to go! Once my husband saw how lovely everything was he immediately started on his wardrobe and things! We had 2 bags for donation and a bag of trash! It’s contagious once you start because now my son is wanting to do his room at the weekend 😮 he is 16 so I don’t feel it’s appropriate for me to do that so I’m pleased he is willing to! My husband and myself will be doing the conservatory at the weekend because it’s becoming a dumping ground over the last year! I was delighted how quickly this year’s declutter went after having done it the same time last year! I’m planning on doing it again in 6 months this time and I think then I will have cupboards and drawers and wardrobes down to 50% full and I’m so happy with that and will be easily able to maintain it 😊

Prompted by having plumbing issues fixed, this week I pulled out everything under my 3 sinks. Then after fixes done and putting contact paper to line the bottoms, I only put back the items we use everyday and a spare of each! Combined 3 extra liquid soaps into one. Tossed the extra containers Looks so good now. The weekly used and other items stayed in the bin and will be in the basement, and in a month and will toss the excess! Talk about a dose of dopamine, I love the results! I was thinking… I know what a dangerous move lol….making a rule to declutter an area before you buy what’s in your cart would help many people avoid overbuying!

I have been on the decluttering journey for years, but still own things that I never use. You have just given my permission to get rid of my 50+ yr old Betty Crocker ring bound cookbook that is falling apart and not touched since I discovered the internet! I also have three overstuffed recipe boxes that were my mother’s. I’m 77, I don’t do that much cooking, and neither do my grown daughters…..Definitely black trash bag bound. I’m sure there are other things in my storage/clothes closet that I have not looked at in years that can join it. With that said, then there are the fantasy self things, I bought a food processor when I retired, used it twice, but struggle with letting it go. Working on that! So you know, thanks to you, my pantry, kitchen cabinets and counters are pintrest worthy, and so easy to maintain. 😊 I have a small set of white Correll plates and bowls and love them.

Hi Dawn, enjoying this super long video at your mom’s house, I see that me as well not too sure about the open shelves, however I think if you group like colors together for example the pink items make three of them and the mint green plate and the green tea pot and another green or white item another three and display them where they flow together and then eliminate what doesn’t go and is not a set then will be more settling to the eyes, have a super nice weekend!!!

I made homemade yogurt in the IP for the first time ever (had the IP for eons lol) & i even had the bandwidth to have my kids join in the process. About throwing stuff away in landfills: For me, I threw a few black trash bags’ worth of stuff away that maybe could have been recycled or payed forward, but I didn’t have the bandwidth to deal with those items at the time. BUT, because that felt yucky, it makes me so much more aware of what I bring into my home now. In the long run, throwing that stuff away in the past is helping me evaluate my consumerism now. Going forward, I buy less, so I don’t have as much to throw away now and in the future. If I hadn’t given myself permission to throw that stuff away, my progress would have been stalled, and I wouldn’t be where I am now in my minimalist journey. Dawn, thanks for helping me give myself permission to throw good things away from time to time so I don’t stall out.

See what you can automate/move stuff closer to where its used. Buying bulk socks and moving them to the door was a huge thing for me when my kids were small. Say no to things that you dont have the bandwidth for

I write the "opened date" on food that is not completely used immediately. Condiments, sauces, boxed dried goods, etc. There's only 2 of us in our home and we don't go through certain things very quickly so is helpful to know when I opened something, e.g. mayonnaise, instead of relying on the expiration date on the product itself.

I just saw your “we are divorced” video & I wanted to say I’m so sorry to hear that. Divorce is very sad & painful & hard to get over & also very common in our society. All the best. KOG! (keep on going)

I use cupboard riser shelves to use vertical space - I keep my Corelle and hang my coffee cups from my favorite shelf with mug hooks. I also keep 2 flat platters right above my Corelle. I love being able to have all my things within my reach - I’m short LOL

Great tip... the Sharpie Date thing... I do that on many things that I put away in my pantry.... write it larger and where I can see it ! That way I'm not digging through boxes all the time 👍

Instead of contact paper especially for rentals, you can use hard plastic placements (cut to size if need be). Also nice to take out to clean. Works great in drawers too.

When I got them cheaply I used self stick vinyl tiles to line cabinets under sinks.

My mom and dad were moving into a new home in another state. While packing, my dad, came across some make up he had confiscated from me at the age of 13. He politely asked me if I wanted it back...I was 47 at the time🤯

It's a kindness, whenever you gift anything to people, to also tell them that's totally OK to pass it on, or not keep. I write date with red permanent marker on front of self care products in bathroom when I bring them home.

I do enjoy going back to the time will tell bathroom container, its helpful to see what we didn't need and can trash or donate.

I bought an apple peeler thingy thinking I was going to bake apple pies.... It's been 2 years and I've never used it. Today it's going into the donate box

I bought one of those too. You fit the apple into the prongs and the blade peels the apple skin off as you turn the handle. I used it once. It proved to me yet again that most cooking tasks can be done with good quality sharp knives without fancy gadgets.

Nail polish has dates too but I use them indefinitely. I have a thinner if needed but mine rarely dry up like older polish from 80's. Better formulas now.

Just parted with the Pampered Chef fluted bread tube. Used it once, years ago, right after I bought it. Who would have thought that I wouldn’t make fluted bread ALL the time?😂

I see this exact pampered chef item at EVERY thrift store I’ve ever been to 😂
