You really won me over when you dumped the Lip/Groove feature! I struggle with lip/groove features on organic bodies, especially when the parting line is not linear. I'm trying to reassess my foundational modeling strategies when dealing with this type of part. I'm modifying the parting line on a prototype right now and it has proven to be very destructive to other sketches and features. I'm locked in on the overall form because the circuit board has a precise fit so I'm thinking of ways to take advantage of this. I think the intersect tool will really come in handy. Nice tutorial!... I was just thinking about adding the S key to my mouse gestures too. Good idea.

Great video! I however noticed that in my case SolidWorks had automatically calculated the parameters for the Lip and Groove (they were not all 0) so that the finished curvature and lines were smooth without need for extra steps, not sure whether this is standard

It really depends on the complexity of the geometry, but the software is constantly improving so I'm glad the default workflow worked out for you! Thanks for sharing your experience!

Check out online portals like 3DContentCentral or Grabcad, they have a great collection of standard electrical packages you can download. Most electrical components are pretty simple to model, good luck!

26:50 - 35:50 I understand that it could just be a way to show the tools but using surfaces was really not needed at all to make these features. The first part could have just been an offset plane referencing the front plane and then split, and the lip/groove could have been done using the same offset planes then split and using 2D sketches to split. If there was a specific reason you decided to use surfaces i would love to know. (Can replace Split feature with Intersect when using planes, but only split works with sketches)

There are a lot of ways to approach any design task, and a lot of constraints that are specific to each design challenge and manufacturing situation. This was simply an illustration of one approach that solves some of the common issues users face, but it is by no means the only way to do it.

I know this is demonstrating one way and of course there are many ways to do any task, but for the lip groove part after you made it into 3 bodies, you used a sketch with a sketch offset. Would it not have been easier to then do another offset with your tolerance, then extrude cut? Unless it is somehow more robust or more modifiable this way, I don't see why create a surface and offset that surface.

As designs get more complex you'll start to find that the simple workflows may not fully achieve your goals. Surfacing is a great set of tools for when challenges get too complex due to curvature, complex intersections, or your specific needs. I hope that helps!

GOOD TIPS HERE IS ANOTHER ONE!!! USE DYNAMIC SIMMETRY when you are making a croquis, and you have to make SYMMETRY, mam, don't water time!!!! Just put your constructive axis and select dynamic symmetry and then just make just ONE SIDE and the other side makes automatically.

Another great tip! I tend to avoid dynamic symmetry because it adds but not deletes dynamically, so when I'm not sure how many entities I will need I like to keep it simple and work on half of the sketch and then mirror when satisfied.

I believe this webinar was recorded only through our webinar software, which uses low bitrate audio encoding. Intersect will both add and remove material, while split will only break bodies up. Intersect is newer and more powerful, it can even automatically create a body representing the interior volume of a container without first creating a body to subtract from.

A quick shortcut to hide or show a body or part is to hover over it and use the Tab key on your keyboard. Shift+Tab over the hidden component will make it re-appear.

11:20 I have to 'accept' my plane first? Okay, i accept it for what it is. Still no way to define its height in relation to the one below it. That blue line appeared magically and i cant tell whats going on cause 320p is max quality (Okay. Double click is what brought it up. Would still prefer these videos in just slightly better quality)
