Күн бұрын

We get to use our talents for a worthy cause in this episode! We're helping price the donated antique and vintage goods at the Garden Club of St. Petersburg, Florida's annual flea market. We help them find a few overlooked items, reveal hidden values for them and get a sneak preview...we even might get to buy a thing or two!
Donors have been generous with gifts of antique and vintage items for this fundraising flea market! We get to see everything from Harrison Begay Navajo prints and 1930s silhouettes to Blue Ridge china and gorgeously painted Italian ceramic exotic birds at this flea market, where furniture and jewelry also are shown in great abundance.
We're doing this on the fly, so we talk aloud about considerations when pricing for a flea market. Are customers resellers, or retail buyers? Should we leave sets together, or split them up? What prices can we push higher, and which are too much for a two-day liquidation sale? We make our pricing strategies evident so viewers at home who are considering having garage sales or selling at wholesale flea markets like this can understand the thought that goes in to making a hundred pricing choices that will hopefully send these things home with happy new owners, while also benefitting the club as much as possible.
In the end, we leave with a couple of things better suited to selling elsewhere, and the satisfaction that our efforts are helping a dedicated group further their aims to fill the outdoor world with beauty by selling indoor antique and vintage items.

Perfect understanding of how to price for an event like this fundraiser. "If someone is willing to pay $2, I think you can get $3". The advice on what sets to split up was spot on. Loved hearing the incredulous reaction to upping the price on the Blendo, gah I agree with the woman, that is ugly stuff, lol. Thank you, George.

Hi George! May I reach out for your opinion? Comparing a piece of early Bennington Pottery to a well-known print by a Canadian Inuit artist, the depiction is nearly identical and seemingly done around the same time period. I’m curious if these two mid-century makers had any connection. I’m an artist, not a reseller, so this is just for personal research. :)
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad Жыл бұрын
Interesting! I imagine there could be a connection, as many artists did designs for commercial manufacturers in that era. However, it could also just be that a design ethos that takes over at a given moment expresses throughout the art world. Or, maybe someone just plagerized the work!

I am looking at you as you are pricing everything and I understand that you are taking into consideration The stage As well as the Restricted time. Just my opinion and it probably doesn't matter much but what I would do... Just personally anyway Is I will take every price on the table for every object After you are done With the reasonable pricing. I would double it. Regardless of what it is I would double it. And it is because of the contrast of the stage And contrast To the time restrictions. Yes you probably would sell less. But you would sell less for more. Instead of selling sixteen items for around three hundred dollars, you would get closer to 500 for items of not necessarily the same. It is because of Many factors. There are the odds, and then there are also the personal experiences that attach people emotionally to an object, And then there is something that is called Shopping therapy. It's when people buy things because it makes them feel better to buy it. You can always go down in price Which a lot of people like to do It makes people feel good to negotiate things it gives them a sense that there and control. You could also do things that are fun like sell raffle tickets On particular objects. People will buy Raffle tickets Especially if it's for a good cause. You could also do what is called a silent auction And that will bring people back to your booth throughout the day. Making something fun And enjoyable Keeping a positive atmosphere.

I do agree about the idea of pricing up if you are having multiple shows in a row, or have a venue to support it or can hold items awhile. In this case, they have no storage, so anything they don't sell in three days gets re-donated to some other organization, so they're motivated sellers and we price accordingly.

I can only judge by the results, they had record sales and almost everything was gone at the end! I try very hard to remember that it has to be salable in short order at those prices...an example is that instead of $2 for three Blendo martini glasses, they got $12, and the buyer can still get $30 for them. It seems fair to me that the organization trying to raise funds to stay alive should get at least 1/3 of the profit potential.

I feel like the younger millennial generation is hung up on the lead in cookware thing, they seem to think its in all vintage and antique glass,ceramics ect,,

Funnily enough, I hear some millennials say they still want Lead Crystal, but they know to only use it for toasting and not long-term storage

Did not appreciate you comment re Land of Lakes. "Kept the land and got rid of the Indians" By the way they are Native Americans. Thanks.

Are you a member of that group? If so, what do you prefer to be called? This is from the website FAQ of National Museum of the American Indian (Smithsonian): "What is the correct terminology: American Indian, Indian, Native American, Indigenous, or Native? All of these terms are acceptable. The consensus, however, is that whenever possible, Native people prefer to be called by their specific tribal name. In the United States, Native American has been widely used but is falling out of favor with some groups, and the terms American Indian or Indigenous American are preferred by many Native people. Native peoples often have individual preferences on how they would like to be addressed. When talking about Native groups or people, use the terminology the members of the community use to describe themselves collectively."

I apologize for offending your sensibilities, I honestly meant it as a point of irony. It seemed in the big firm's rush to be politically correct that they removed the Native American woman without considering the optics of that. Not good form in my opinion, so I retold a rather tasteless joke that I felt illustrated the point.
