Their next fight: • HEMA instructors fight...
Impressive fighting skills at work. There is a reason why these guys teach historical swordsmanship.
This match took place at the Blood & Iron historical martial arts school in New Westminster, BC, Canada. Richard Marsden, co-founder and principal instructor of the Phoenix Society of Historical Swordsmanship, came for a visit to give two seminars, one on Fiore's longsword and another on Polish saber fencing. After the instruction he sparred with Lee Smith, co-founder and principal instructor of Blood & Iron.

No actually . Its would not end up in this fast . Because usually people put on armor to their arm, torso and head . So cuts like those in the video would not kill . Especially if its a steel plate armor . Average conquest usually last minimum of 3 hours . Depending on the equipment and skill mostly

@@muhammadamirun3777 well not really, and it depends upon the place and time period of the world. if you're talking the middle ages, only nobles and land owners would have been knights while the peasants that would have been mass recruited for the war (take for example the english in the hundreds year war) would be wearing none to little armor. most of the time people in armor would die because their horses died, and they couldn't get up. it was not fast.

Being a martial artist and always rolling my eyes when someone says "You can disarm a knife from an attacker", this footage proves you need to be Matrix level reflexes from defending yourself from a sword, mind you it's bigger than a knife, heavier to boot and expert practitioners narrowly avoid the barely predictable slashes. Now try doing that with something smaller, easier to hide, faster to deploy and attack with, yeah there's no way a person can disarm a knife attack. It great seeing each practitioner calling out a proper blow. Allows both parties to learn and grow.
@spicketspaghet7773
@spicketspaghet7773 2 жыл бұрын
The best defense against a knife is not being within knife distance. Fiore has a *FEW* grabs against dagger but even they're known as a sorry-chance of working, plus, Fiore is all about joint locks and breaks. If you grab their arm you might as well break it...if you've not died of blood loss from the 4 stabs your enemy has already landed.
@SirConto
@SirConto Жыл бұрын
Sword seems like a strange comparison though. I'd much prefer my chances against a knife than a sword. A sword moves way faster than any knife. A tiny flick of the wrist can make the sword tip move extremely quickly and unpredictably. And all the while, the swordman is at a distance out of your reach. A knife moves at the speed of the hand and has shorter range. Now to be sure, I understand perfectly that my chances against a knife are next to nill as well, but there's the ever so slim chance you might get a chance to grap the knife attacker's hand and get into some kind of grappling, especially if he's just some guy that just picked up a knife and doesn't know what he's doing. And there have been rare cases of people surviving knife attacks like that.
@dethhollow
@dethhollow Жыл бұрын
The thing is, you can stop a knife, right? It's basically the same as catching a punch. But if you knew someone was going to punch you would you REALLY risk getting hit on your ability to grab their fist out of the air or something? PROBABLY NOT. It's doable, but it's just so hard that you'd never actually want to do it unless it's an absolute last resort. The best defense against any knife attack will always be to just run the fuck away and hope you run into someone that can help you deal with the madman chasing you with a fucking knife!

Greatest artist who ever lived You can be a sheep and just automatically accept what a teacher says as Law, but I’m certainly not. Some Teachers are opinionated, remember people taught at a young age about thanksgiving, but never what occurred after? Remember that there’s some teachers saying global warming is a farce, and others not? So which one is right, I guess both then, since all teachers are right about everything, right?!?! Not to mention, college professors in states like California are mostly liberal, and preach socialism is the best economic systems and other ideas of that nature. When there’s no way of knowing that for sure... I agree, you should believe your teacher, but it doesn’t mean every teacher is right about everything they say. I'm a pretty experienced fencer. Not specifically with sabers but with various other European weapons (I've been instructed, instructed and also helped prep a lot of ancient battle reenactments for various organizations) and I've responded to a couple of comments. I just thought I'd put my responses to two of the most common critiques I see in one place: "They are aiming for each other's swords, like children do when they play fight": Aiming for the blades to maneuver and create openings is beyond standard practice in virtually every form of armed melee combat. In just about any style of swordplay, if you aim for your opponents body first, you're going to create a dozen openings and lose very quickly. Being hit because you chose to bypass your opponents weapon is a pretty common mistake to amateurs AND to veteran fencers that get tired, impatient, or desperate. "This proves that real sword fights are always shorter than in the movies." That isn't necessarily true. This series of fights was fairly realistic but it's missing one key component. Their lives are not on the line and they have no risk of mutilation. That leaves them free to take risks and try things that they might not otherwise attempt. A sword fight between two trained fencers with actual risk of bodily harm could be over instantly, but it could just as likely go until one or both of the fencers are exhausted, which was often the case in fights involving heavier European weapons.

Not an expert here so I could be wrong, but wouldnt the edge of the blade become dul,l like really fast ?
@Warrior_Culture
@Warrior_Culture 5 жыл бұрын
@@roonaldo86 Dull, no. Dullness comes more from environmental wear, using the blade to cut things like wood/rope/etc, and poor care of the blade over time. A dull blade has a more uniform wear along the edge. However, yes, it would develop a lot of flaws and "knicks" on the edge of the blade at specific points of impact. That's why, in reality, a combat ready blade needs regular care and would receive care after every use that involved more than few contacts. Idk about sabers specifically, but on blades less than a couple inches from one edge to the other (or something like a katana with less than a couple inches from blade to the backside of the blade) simple flaws can develop into "fatal flaws", which can be a deeper knick or a fine crack in the metal. That can lead to blades breaking and a very dead swordsman. You don't often see the amount of care that goes into a combat-ready sword in the movies, but there is a lot more to it than carrying it from fight to fight. And don't even get me started on sheathing a bloody blade. XD
@roonaldo86
@roonaldo86 5 жыл бұрын
@@Warrior_Culture You probably know better, I just figured that if you catch a swing with one of your own, the momentum would render the edge dull really fast. Especially since steel wasn't as good back than(compared to today's steel). I read somewhere that a longsword loses its sharpness oj the battlefield really fast due to the blood sticking to it. I imagine a saber has the same issue especially if you catch a swing with it and you're not able to use the point of it to pierce. But you seem to know your stuff, I would just use a spear and keep my distance xD
@Gillymonster18
@Gillymonster18 5 жыл бұрын
They’re reckless. That’s the problem with any form of recreation based on violence: paintball, airsoft, Karate, HEMA etc even UFC to a point. The paintballs/pellets won’t kill you, the referee will stop the fight from going to far, the swords are dull and the armor will stop them. For that same reason I don’t really like the Russian full armor/weapons sparring because it devolves into people just clubbing each other into submission. If they were actually trying to stab or decapitate or kill, no way would they let people get that close or be so reckless. At least with this they call it if they get hit and fight with technique. That’s about as close as you can get to the real thing.
@Warrior_Culture
@Warrior_Culture 5 жыл бұрын
@@Gillymonster18 You're right, but there's really no way around that without adding some sort of penalty to losing that would be detrimental to a person health. XD I suppose the closest you could legally get is to walk around challenging people to "mutual combat" in the states that still have that law.

@@ShadowQrow i mean even if he isnt in a fight to the death it would still cost him points against a better opponent, and i personally think its disrespectful to treat any duel any differently from a fight to the death even if it is a facilitated event and stuff. If youre engaging someone in combat, either physically or mentally, regardless of the consequences of losing, both competitors should give their absolute best and try their absolute hardest to win, out of respect and appreciation for the struggle it took for each competitor to reach the level of skill each has achieved, and for having the guts to "step in the ring" with eachother, so to speak, and have a contest of ability against eachother. It just seems a little annoying to have someone not take me seriously like that if i were to face them, especially if i was losing to them. It could almost come off as patronizing. There was a kid like that on my fencing team in high school who did that stuff and i remember having such a big ego and being a total asshole in general, win or lose. After a win he would turn away after shaking hands with his opponent and start bragging to me and the rest of the team and berating the other fencers skills, and if he lost hed bitch and moan and complain and make up excuses. It felt like his flamboyant style was a perfect manifestation of that flashy, egotistical additude he always carried around, and maybe its partly just because he reminds me of my old teammate, but the flamboyance and additude of richards style carries the same air and feels patronizing in the same way, even if its totally unintentional and hes not actually like my old teammate at all, which im almost sure he isnt.

I don’t think a lot of people realize how incredibly difficult this is, I did foil fencing for about 3 years and it’s much different from saber but the same general mechanics and that was the most technical and physically demanding sport I’ve ever done. Yet saber fencing is even more technical and physical so I feel like you need to experience fencing to truly appreciate these pros

It's not fencing, but yeah I can see where you are coming from. I'm doing fencing and HEMA and I can agree. Off targets for foil are so frustrating, but since its only the legs for saber, which is stupid to go for anyway, it's a while mile more realistic and difficult.

At the same time tho it still lacks a degree of authenticity, knowing that they won't/can't suffer any real debilitating or life threatening injuries completely changes how they fight here vs how a fight would actually look. I just don't think people should be acting like this is exactly how an authentic sword fighting would look.

This also makes you see why "first blood" was a thing. Not only do you probably not want to keep going after getting cut...
