No.3 has fantastic stuff for coaching. On the back line, the defender generates masses of distraction / confusion. This slows the attacker right down. The prime-riposte finish is made possible by really hard, tactically intelligent set up. Bravo!

Sabre is a very hard sword to do but I just happen to be one at 9 years old, got my first medal in my 3rd competition, first gold at the 5th never actually started at foil, just went up directly to Sabre

@@ethanebang7507 You wot mate? Call me old fashioned, but I think it is imperative to begin at foil. Then, one may choose to go onto sabre or epee, ideally both. It's just improper to jump into sabre without proper training. I took a bloody exam on directing bouts, guiding drills, and vocabulary. I wasn't allowed to hold a sword until after a month of pure footwork. And even then, it was just footwork with the foil! Kids these days, where's the discipline?

@@ShaneusSnake It was the sheer audacity of that little nick on the retreat. Gemesi was in essence 'showing off' with his preparatory bounce which instead of launching into a direct attack or a parry/riposte as would have been expected, turned into an opportunistic touch. It was very cheeky.

@@christianalbertjahns2577 On one match Szilagyi made a fuss when the referee forgot to give him a touch, he didnt add it on the scoreboard. That is ok and the referee added it. Few actions later Szilagyi scored, the referee added the touch and Szilagyi or the other fencer protested about something. They talked a bit and at the end the referee gave Szilagyi another touch, he forgot he had already given the point to him and just gave him another one after they stopped talking. No card or anything, he just didnt remember he had already changed the score so basically Szilagyi got a point for free. No one on the venue noticed at the time though or said anything. Szilagyi vs Xu T16.11 touch was awarded normally and 12th touch was given free to Szilgyi. Cannot remember the competition though :/ Something in 2019 or last competition of 2020

@@archardor3392 from what I've read from you, the cause is probably confusion from ref and some others. The first time Szilagyi protested, he absolutely had the right to do so. The second time though, I see it was caused by confusion. I can't see that it was because Szilagyi wanted some free touch by tricking the ref. Apparently Szilagyi is a good guy, or at least the guy presents himself as a good guy.

The best touches I saw were by Michele Maffei. He had a slow tempo riposte (often a belly cut) that was unique among saber fencers.

@@erichvondonitz5325 Sure thing, I myself am a fencer too. In Olympic or modern fencer you have 3 weapons Sabre, epee and foil. You can see what weapon it is by looking at the guard and weapon length. This weapon is an Sabre because if you look at the guard it’s connected from the blade to the beginning of the handle. What’s more is that you can score touches with the blade itself and not only with the point. With epee and foil you can only score touches with the point. The weapon in Olympic or modern fencing that is the rapier is epee. If you have any other questions I’ll be glad to explain :)

My comment: #10 : an unconventional second intention. probably happens more often in foil. it's quite conventional that Szilagyi made his own opening, in which Kim capitulated it. #9 : I can't see it other than good reaction from Hartung but somehow I can see that Hartung wanted to lure Montano to make mistake by using and he succeed. The execution, though, was quite sloppy but he got what he wanted. #8 : unconventional but the reason is not because it was creative (it was creative, obviously) but because it was illegal (or should be illegal). the green fencer (FotR) parried and delivered the riposte AFTER he turned his back. he should get a card. #7 : somehow I think Apithy didn't hear the referee quite clear, that's why he acted late. Nevertheless, he turned his tardiness to act into unintentional second intention. Impressive. #6 : a classical second intention that quite rare to see. classic second intention since the red fencer (FotL) feign a mistake (that is both distance and blade position "mistake") and then got absolutely ready to parry their opponent's attack #5 : ducking is quite unconventional. Kim K. managed to spring a distance trap but probably just like #9, the execution probably could be more smooth. If he didn't duck, the point would be Szatmari's (which was probably why Szatmari bited the bait) #4 : really look like foil touch. really clever move from red fencer but I can't see that he made that move intentionally. still a great touch. #3 : I can see that Berder(?) want to bait Kim into making mistake but somehow the touch was because her reaction. Great touch, nonetheless. #2 : in my opinion, this should be #1. really nice to see that Oh wanted to exploit the perceived threat of Korean bounce to get a point without making touch. probably unintentional but his over the top bounce convinces me otherwise. Oh made an over the top bounce without closing the distance is probably why his opponent got scared and reach the off-line. #1 : this is very great (though I think #2 is superior) but also not as weird as many would think since I see it as classic distance trap repertoire with weird execution (since the goal is the same: make a distance trap). the trap got sprung so brilliantly. very great touch.

Because I came to the comment section to either just leave a comment asking this or hopefully finding someone talking about it. But what happened in the first match? (Or I guess I should say match #10) No matter how slow I play it, I still can't see or figure out what happened? I'M SO CONFUSED!!! lol I just can't see the touch no matter how hard I try, so I hope you can explain it to me considering you have a good understanding of what's happening in this entire compilation. @@Shiznittlebizbampop1 well I don't know whether you are new to fencing or not but here we go. First thing first, sabre (which is the discipline shown in this video) is the most fast paced and reactive combat and because of that, most of the time, the fencers immediately lunge or make other premeditated actions. This is also the reason why fencers are prone to jump the gun (and it's penalized to do so). Let's go to the #10 touch. After the referee said "allez" (which means essentially "commence" or "start fencing/fighting"), Szilagyi (at the right of the referee) happens to start earlier than Kim (at the left). Kim probably thought Szilagyi jumped the gun or he didn't hear the ref himself but he decided not to ask the ref to halt the bout. Szilagyi probably thought that the ref would halt the bout and relaxed his stance and at that moment Kim threw an attack at Szilagyi and scored a point (and since it was his 15th point, he won the match). Looking back again, I think all of this was intentional. Regardless, it's a brilliant touch

But as of actually diving in (Apart from going to a class. So pretty much just watching videos of matches.) I haven't very much, but I have been watching and trying to learn as much as I could for the past couple of months. So considering the video/round I asked about, I could see why I was so confused because it's definitely a genius move. Because I thought the referee would have stopped the fight before he made the point, or would have not counted it because as you said he "jumped the gun" so thank you very much for explaining it.

This is the first time ever watching this sport. Damn these people are fast? I can see how their footwork would be very useful in boxing and MMA. But I have a some questions. 1. Is there a string or wire attached to their back? I couldn't see it on all of them, so I'm not sure if that's what I'm seeing, but if they are, why do they need that? 2. The swords are so fast it's almost like they're using it as a whip. How can the judges see it to score the points? I can barely see it the hit land in slow motion, how can the judges see it in real time? 3. Who in fencing would be considered the "Michael Jordan" or "Muhammed Ali" of Fencing? Who is the GOAT of this sport? I really want to see their highlights to see if I can see the difference in skill level. Mad respect to the sport of Fencing. That shit looks hard AF! 👊🏼👏🏼🤝🏼

The fencers are attached to an electric scoring machine that turns on a light if they land a hit. If you watch enough fencing you don't really need to see the actual blade to understand where it is, it's a bit like hockey where it can be difficult to see the puck but if you watch enough you can follow where it is. The GOAT of sabre fencing is a contentious issue but the strongest contender is probably Aron Szilagyi who has won gold at the last three Olympic games.

Yeah, that's why I had to stop for a long time, it just got to be too expensive. Depending on where you live though you can find a club that's either relatively cheap or free and shares equipment. Like many other sports though, the very best are often people who have been showered with resources like high caliber personal coaches from a young age
