You have the best videos about Ski instructions - no doubt; clear and simple to understand. I only have one request. The difference in technique between (medium/long) turns and short turns. Keeping the body always directed downhill for short turns. Isn't this a general rule for all kind of turns (long/medium/short)? Whats really is the difference in technique between (medium/long) vs short turns.

Darren, I noticed in your video "Skiing Stacked" (Advanced Ski Technique - Skiing Stacked) you instructed to have your torso facing in the same direction as the skis and direction of travel, however in this video you said to have your torso facing down the fall line independent of your skis. Please explain when these different techniques should be used. Thanks, Jacob

Ski design technology is so advanced today. Skiers today don't have as advanced skills that skiers had from say, mid seventies through the eighties. Ski design has changed skiing technics and how skiing skills (steering, edging, pressure) progress to advanced levels. Interesting to watch the simultaneous leg rotation, the extreme banking (weighting the inside ski) and pressuring the skies mostly in the fall line. These skis are a blast to ski on, but you won't catch me skiing like that, .. o.k. maybe in the moguls.
@joebenoliel62844 жыл бұрын
Hey just wondering what ski mountain are you at
@hudsonquay4 жыл бұрын
In the demonstration are you only using the edges to turn or are you also using rotation. If using both, approximately what proportion of each? The idea of retracting the legs at the end of the turn to change edges was a revelation to me. Also thinking about the ski as a spring, when the ski is loaded the sping is coiled and at the end of the turn you release to spring out and into the next turn.

so when I'm skiing double blacks should I turn using the edges like u showed or should I flatten my skies during the turn like you showed in the how to ski steeps video.
@panheadbob29266 жыл бұрын
If you're asking this question, I doubt your skiing Double black Diamonds, ... To answer your question, ... Probably best to not think so much about edging and work on vertical movement with steering, upper/lower body separation and a good pole plant on the down movement, .... do they even teach pole plants anymore?

@dmitryalexandrov90076 жыл бұрын
Thank you Darren and Ski School for the great video. However, does anybody know how to control speed using this technique? For example, in longer radius turns I can direct my skis slightly uphill at the end of each turn. In short turns if I apply more pressure on skis, then virtual bump starts to ruin everything. Are there some tips or I have to handle this annoying bump? How? I would like to avoid situations, when ski loses contact with the snow, until I'll go quad cork, lol. Btw it's clearly seen on the video that virtual bump occurs at almost every Darren's transition phase

@themplar11 жыл бұрын
Very nice. AND a helmet this time! Only problem i have with this technique is the weight on the inner leg. its to much to often. So an average skier will have more risk of falling because of to much weight on the inner leg. (could be it just looks like that but i can see some transitios who show this aswell) But it sure looks nice.
@rsvpilot7210 жыл бұрын
I think you are looking at it wrong mate. This video is aimed at Expert level skiing. The technique of keeping the inside ski light is a technique that belongs to the intermediate skill set. With advanced ski techniques the edges of both skis are to be engaged and gripping the snow, although there will usually be more pressure on the outside ski in most situations. Look at where his center of mass stays.
@themplar10 жыл бұрын
James Kelley Well you are right about that. But even with experts it does give problems. Is saw a video of an olympiade with several countries demonstrating the techniques even at this higest level you could see the countries that leaned in too much had issues. And ofcourse oblitterated by the machines of Austria. Sure at higher levels there will be more weight towards the inner ski, max of 50/50 though. But you are right at real expert level this is a fun method to do but even for experts its sketchy when leaning in the curve to much without counterbalancing. And what is expert level these days in a time that sadly people take 3 days of lessons and then take it on on them selves.
@keitht.272710 жыл бұрын
themplar "Expert" implies a broad range of turn radius, carve/slarve/skid/butter under ridiculously varied situations (off-piste/race/park). I coach and instruct all aspects. To address your initial qualification about weighting the inside ski, it's situational. As an example, would you want the inside ski bending less than the outside ski running gates? Nope. You want both skis to be in the same arc. This goes for most applications where your body is 'stacked'. There's a shift in the hips if you counter in short turns or bumps; you can still weight the inside ski. I don't know if you're referring to steeps, but I'd say the only time I A-frame a turn is in hard, icy chutes. Your race analogies are non-sequitur; WC racers are constantly on the edge of control.

do you not believe in up and down movements between turns?
@panheadbob29266 жыл бұрын
The lateral movement from side to side is the equivalent to a more "up & down" vertical movement. Lateral movement is used in larger radius turns, while an up / down is seen more in shorter radius turns.

Do you guys still look at comments?

The vast majority of skiers make Giant Slalom or long radius turns but the following information is the same thought process for Slalom turns. Every time you make a turn, the skis are taking you across the Fall Line. Think of a dollar $ign. The best way to think of your body position when you are ready to start a new turn is, put your upper body, from your hips up, back in the fall line and as you get off your downhill foot. While your skis continue across the hill, you are going down the hill. That is what makes your legs go from leaning up the hill to down the hill which is what rolls your feet over so you will end up on the arch of your uphill foot. As your skis come around towards the opposite direction, your body is already down the hill and over the tips of the skis and they catch your fall. Skiing is continually falling down the hill while allowing the skis to turn and catch you to control your speed. What is wrong with this demonstration and it is Critical information, he needs to be telling you when you are getting off your downhill ski to allow the uphill skis to start and make the next turn. This demonstration makes you think that all you do is stand on both feet and roll your ski over. Mentioning retracting and extending the legs is a confusing way to explain what is really happening with your legs. Going back to the falling down the hill and the skis catching you comment, as the skis turn under you while you are falling, your legs compress. As you fall over them and go down hill when they are still crossing the hill, your legs extend. It is not something you Do, Make Happen or Think About, it is a result of doing other things correctly. Which were left out here.

Body position has no place in ski instruction. That's what we are watching right now ..a stuck stick like upper body. Body dynamics, proactive body movements is ski instruction. Everything about a ski turn is making sure the upper body stays ahead of you. I advocate skiing from your toes you get more more angulation. It's not that you are leveraging by putting your nose over your tips but recognize that many ski boots never had enough lean and many are too stiff and many people ski with stiff feet and ankles.

your're talking about body position, and say to practice where your arms go and what they should feel like, and when you don't have poles you look great, but when you do have poles, you drag them, and it looks awful and very amateur like.
