I'm so glad to see this video about training a dog to not pull, stop, or go off to whatever gets his/ her attention. I've been doing this with my dogs since I was 13. Almost 50 years ago. Consequently, my dogs heel properly. Some people have told me this is mean, that "jerking" the dog about is cruel. I think having a dog continually pulls, stops to sniff or go off to whatever grabs their attention is not only frustrating but can potentially lead to dangerous situations. Over the years I've offered to trained others this method when they tell me "my dog is impossible to train to a heel". Most of them are grateful to learn this. A few do reject it as " mean".That's not only their loss but the dog's loss too. I'll be forwarding this video some particular people and I hope they will pay heed. Thank you for your efforts to "train" us how to train our dogs. I'll be subscribing to your channel now that I've found it. It appears that your training philosophy is much like mine.

@leaannsavage2231
@leaannsavage2231 11 күн бұрын
Keep going in the opposite direction. For example, they are "running in place" going North, you about turn and head "South" - they run past you and pull hard South, you about turn and head North again. In short order they will be looking to you to see where you are going so they can avoid the correction and voila - they follow you instead of you following them!

Thank you very much for getting back. He is perfect waiting at the door. He won’t even go out until I gear him up but the minute I do that is when he starts to pull so I will start in the garage as I walk toward the car I’ve been trading myself for a lot of years and I’ve never had one quite like him, I think I’m going to write a book about this Border Collie of mine someday thank you very much and I will do all these items because I have done it already but now I’m using the stimulation collar with a beeper and a vibrator which is number 100 and it doesn’t really work that well but it’s better than nothing

With puppies, I am never worried about loose leash walking, I put them on a long line leash, 15-20 feet and I let them explore. They’re too young. I want to build their confidence, allow them to explore, and sniff and all that. Puppies usually will follow you wherever you go anyways. I don’t start stressing walking nicely on a leash until about 5-6 months

This is perfect. I love it. There’s another trainer that does the exact same thing that I watch. I will say one thing if I take my dog to a place other than my yard, I get them out of the car and I go to a specific area where he can pee and poop if he needs to, but then we get into training mode And I will also say not all dogs get tired of the little correction yank. Some of them are really pigheaded and it takes a long long time for them to see that that is the wrong behavior and I think the guy that does the same thing is called Hamilton. He’s excellent also thanks for your video. I’m gonna subscribe to you.

You are so right. With some dogs it takes more time and effort for them to get it. Some hounds can be a float to train but I love them. That extra time and effort will be worth it however, to have a dog that can be walked enjoyable and safely.

It's really tricky figuring out how to talk to people who are in that situation. When I tried it with a woman (whose dog had just pulled her down so hard I worried she got hurt), she was FULL of excuses, the clearest of which was "Now isn't the time." Made no sense. Of course her dog was in a harness. She walked off still being pulled along by her dog. I wonder if it would have made a difference if I'd been walking a nicely trained dog myself. Joel Beckman says, "Dogs need adversity in their lives" (just like we do). The way I look at is, you're walking the dog for what, half an hour out of the whole day? They can learn to behave for that long without being traumatized. Unlike some people.

Any tips on working with multiple puppies close in age (different breeds)
@AustinLarameeDogTrainer
@AustinLarameeDogTrainer 19 күн бұрын
I’d never have 2 puppies at once. I always wait until my first pup grows up and is fully trained before I look into getting a new pup! It just makes it much harder. You don’t want them to bond more with each other than with you. So I would make sure that you train them individually and build and individual bond with each puppy. Don’t let their bond of each other be stronger than each’s bond with you. Littermate syndrome is a common thing

Is a slip leash ok for a poodle? I’d rather have my mini pull me to the end of the earth than put a slip leash on him. So this with a harness, that’s training. Poodles are smart, they don’t need hurting to get it.

No sniffing, pulling, or pottying. Why would the dog ever want to go on a walk?
@AustinLarameeDogTrainer
@AustinLarameeDogTrainer 24 күн бұрын
Because you want to teach a dog to be able to walk good on a leash. This is why you teach them a release command so that when we say “break” they’re free to to be a dog. The way I train is I get dogs fully off leash in all environments, so good obedience is necessary for off leash freedom. When I walk my dog on trails, 99% of the time he’s in a “break” where he’s freely roaming and sniffing wherever he wants, but as soon I say heel, he’s walking by my side if a dog or person is coming to pass us.

@@watchmoivies123 I would teach him a release command, that releases your dog to go be free. When I do potty, I make them sit or lay down first, then I say “BREAK” and that tells them they are free to go sniff, potty, etc

@@AustinLarameeDogTrainer Thank you. I'm training my dog to be a mobility service dog. I have to let my husband take him out so he can sniff, pee and get his zoomies out... before he goes to work with me. I have to keep him by my side (he's basically my cane and helps me get up if I fall). When I can take him for a relaxed walk (on good days) I wanted to know how to properly keep him from pulling. Thank you for the easy to understand video. I had a lot of issues when we first got my pup because he would get car sick. I couldn't use treats as a reward. My dog does really well by my side and not pulling when he's working. I want to have consistent training to show my husband for more relaxed walks.

Use a check chain. Short jerk if pulls, then let lead go loose. Simple. I've used this method for 50+ years on all my nine Basset Hounds and they've all walked beautifully on a lead. Barbara Woodhouse promoted that method 50 years ago and it ha always worked for me. These stupid K9 harnesses are a waste of money.

What if your dog never, ever, EVER allows the leash to be loose? He pulls because he's on the leash, not towards nor away from anything. I'd just be spinning 360 endlessly with this technique, and my dog doesn't even acknowledge 'snaps' on the leash.
@AustinLarameeDogTrainer
@AustinLarameeDogTrainer 18 күн бұрын
I see, in that case, you have to make the leash loose my pushing to release the pressure and then snap it. One, if he’s not reacting to the leash corrections, then you need to step up to a prong collar to avoid physically harming your dog by having to snap the leash harder and harder to get him to react.

Start inside the house. You may need to take smaller steps in training him. Also teach him to wait for you at the door (open door a tiny bit, if he tries to lunge through close it, keep doing it until he waits). He doesn't go through the door even if you do, until you tell him it's okay - and even "Okay" means he walks through calmly. Get that done and he's already halfway to loose leash walking.
