I'm 4 months late to the party, but I'll drop down my tip anyway! Don't feel like you need to stick to one size in the pattern for your whole sock! My years of marching band and living in the mountains have left me with MASSIVE calves and itty bitty feet. No one size sock ever fits me like it should, so I usually end up having to knit the smallest size for the foot and increase as the leg goes up to a larger size for the leg! Or start the largest size and decrease down, depending on if it's cuff down or toe up. I try to hide my increases and decreases in the back or on the sides so the front of the sock looks seamless and can show off whatever pretty pattern is going on!

The best tip I got before I started knitting socks was to knit my first pair in worsted weight with a pattern for that weight yarn. It made it easier to use a slightly larger needle and to see what I was doing on the heel and toe.

My sock knitting tip is to keep trying new techniques. My first pair of socks was top-down with a heel flap and gusset with a wedge toe on dpns, but I’ve since tried toe-up, short row heels, afterthought heels, round toes, star toes, magic loop, 9” circulars, etc, etc. All of those experiments resulted in wearable socks and they really helped me find my best fitting socks combined with the most satisfying knitting experience.

So what is your favorite method for sock knitting? I found that magic-loop is the most comfortable for me but it’s AWFUL for color work (at least, so far - I’m only just doing my first color work socks).

I, an inexperienced knitter. I knit one thing I didn’t know how to knit before. Then I become drunk with power and my second project is more complex and us always a disaster. Making a vanilla sock over and over until I’m comfortable with it. Great! That solves a big knitting problem, delusions of grandeur!

I‘m only on my third pair, so I‘m definitely still a beginner but my tips would be to choose a yarn that you really enjoy working with and to try out 9 inch circulars if you don‘t like dpns

Some great tips! I would add that as you start making alterations to patterns (more rows in the leg or a different decrease for the toes etc) or try a new technique, leave yourself really thorough notes. This helps with knowing what you're doing for the second sock, but also in the future when you've worn your socks a bit and maybe aren't 100% happy with fit and want to try something slightly different for your next pair. If you don't know what you did before, it's much harder to change it.

Loved your tip at the end, about doing the afterthought heel bf the toe. I do that! It really works!! Best tip I've ever tried on preventing ladders when working on dpn (I don't like circular) is to insert your working needle into the first stitch from BELOW the previous needle instead of from the top. Approaching that first stitch from below, really prevents the existing stitch from stretching too much, thus preventing a ladder. Also, on dpn, make sure to not stretch out the last stitch on each needle. It's very easily done but a little bit of extra attention there will really help prevent laddering.

hello and a big thank you for this precious video which brings together important points to manage. I'm still a fan of top down version socks because I offer my socks to people whose exact size I don't always know, this method allows me to make alterations if necessary. I suggest the Finchley graft to finish the end of the socks. it is made on the reverse side, it gives a prettier shape and the gesture is very easy. Thank you Google Translate.

So inspiring! My tip is if you have 30+ inch cable and you knit toe-up using magic loop, you can knit two socks at a time using two threads, just take the second one from the inside of your skein (I'm not sure if it really is a tip, but for me it was soo helpful). Advantages: 1. You don't have to count and check if your socks are equal, they will always be. 2. You can use up all the yarn in the skein. 3. You get all the work done at once and don't feel you don't want to knit the second sock. Thank you all for the tips, they really increase the quality of knitting. Good luck with your projects!

Denise says to put the new needle above the cable when knitting the first stitch. In your other sock video you recommend putting the needle below to knit and above to purl (which is what I do). I tried both ways on the socks I'm currently knitting but I can't see a difference, maybe because I'm using 2mm needles and it's just too small to make much difference. I'll have to try it with thicker yarn and larger needles and see what I like. Just wondering if ANYONE ELSE out there has words of wisdom on this topic.

Love watching your videos! You make me feel like I could knit anything ! I’m about to begin socks for the first time and I’m really excited about the project. However, I’m confused. The sock pattern I have lists the sizes as s,m & l. How do I figure out what real sizes are in those ranges? Is there a chart I’m missing? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hmmm. Your pattern should list the actual circumference for the finished fabric so you can make an informed choice… if it doesn’t, I might suggest a different pattern as your first one. Summer Lee had an amazing free sock pattern you could look at and Earthtones Girl has some great patterns and a free sock course on KZbin.

Toe up socks..can not get Them to fit. I knit a 64 st sock cuff down. Heelflap over 32 stitches 38 rows deep picking up 23 stitches on Both sides. Tried a bunch of toe up socks..gave them all away no matter what heel and alterations i knit. If you have a really large/deep heel toe up may not be the wat to go. My socktip.. make a lot of good notes. Needles, yarn, alterations, rows for the foot. (I know now that my toe go to sockyarn needs 45 needles of foot for me and 68 for my husband. Also 2 common brands neer 50 and 48 needles for me and 74 and 72 rows for my husband.. i knit out socks till the start of the foot and then only check for fit once.)

Actually, the advantage to Toe Up is to try them on as you go, several times if needed! This way, they'll fit every time. However, since I have a rather large hi-instep, I also knit 3 before I got a good fit. Unless your foot is 'special' like mine. I have tried several patterns myself. It's hard if your foot is wide also. But, trying them on allows you to adjust as you go - thus they fit better. The heels will all fit well once you find the one type that fits you bet. Most can be knit either way. HTH
