The state catches anywhere from 24 to 40 frogs on Oahu each year.

Coquies are not harmful for the plants, by the contrary, they help to control insects that will affect plants
@AlexisVega-xi5yq3 жыл бұрын
Yes but when they reach a place they don't belong to they can cause severe damage to the local insect populations which are very important to the ecosystem. So introducing an extra insect predator (which the coquí is) can and most likely will cause significant damage to the native insects.
@luisa.rodriguezrivera20003 жыл бұрын
@@AlexisVega-xi5yq False, they eat fire ants, your pest right now. You have a sound solution for that problem, but sadly you want to get rid off them. In Puerto Rico, they have never make any problem with the insect population, since most of the insects are not in the diet of the coqui, that will not change in Hawaii also.
@AlexisVega-xi5yq3 жыл бұрын
@@luisa.rodriguezrivera2000 sorry man but you are in the wrong. They don't eat fire ants only. They live in the trees and while fire ants ocasionally go up trees they are primarly terrestrial, so coquís also eat other arboreal insects and spiders. In Puerto Rico they have never damaged the insect population because THEY ARE NATIVE to P.R. and have predators who control coquí population. In Hawaii they don't have predators and so the numbers explode and the insect numbers decrease.

How are they detrimental to anything? This is the animal of Puerto Rico. The sounds they make is beautiful and soothing.

It’s not that they are bad it’s the issue where they are not from there and they are slowly eating the natural resources of the native animals which in turn can destroy their whole habitat. I’m Puerto Rican and I love them but I understand why they are being killed on sight.

@luisa.rodriguezrivera20003 жыл бұрын

Yes, they were until the late 1980s, they were sent to the big island Hawaii by accident when they were on imported nursery plants. That's why they're trying to get rid of them, the coqui sing at night and the Hawaiians don't like it. They're not used to them. When I go to Puerto Rico; I love hearing them sing. It's relaxing like a lullaby, it helps me sleep.

I saw my first coqui about 20 years ago. Didn't know it was a bad froggie at the time. I understand that they came in accidentally on the phony bamboo good luck plants imported from another country. They are not native to Hawaii and therefore can do some damage. They are all over the place near Hilo. Good luck.

Aponte... Is not a Mexican surname, yet you hate the sound of a tiny animal that was endemic to PR. I bet your grandparents, third or fourth generations of Puerto Rican would have given anything besides the sound of that tiny frog back in 1910 when you were taken to Hawaii to work at the pineapple plantations. If they have established is first because they have food, what food? Insects. Would you rather have mosquitoes all over you and getting sick with dengue, or being poisoned with whatever they use to kill the mosquitoes, a poison that will surely give you a slow agonizing death by cancer. Be a proud Puerto Rican and enjoy the sound. They are not noisier than crickets yet you people don't make a Crusade to kill them. I hope you have a lot of Folger's, you will need them. Read about how many species there were here and because habitat destruction many of the species have extinguished, and when an endemic animal dies it is because the place is dying as well. Trying to get rid of the coquíes is an ignorance. And you possibly sleep in A/C, so the noise is not perceivable inside a room. But they are small, they are Puerto Rican, so the abusive behavior florishes. Try, God gave us those little frogs as a way for us to notice His Creation every night before going to sleep. And you will not get rid of them...
