On the Tom Cruise question, he’s bigger than the Oscar’s. Love him or hate him, this ceremony isn’t important to him. He’ll keep jumping out of planes, and it’ll be up to the academy if they ever want to award that sort of thing a prize. But he doesn’t need the recognition.

The "narrative" aspect was really strong this year. You can make the case that all four acting wins were narrative-driven

Oscar is about momentum, not narrative nor performances. If it goes for "narrative" then Glen Close should have won. If it goes for "performances" then Cate/Austin/Kerry should have won. Oscar also didn't care about the age as it goes to Rami Malex and Eddie Redmayne who were still not old at the time they got it. Oscar voters are lazy to think, they just copy whatever award show that comes right before the voting opens!!!

This year's Oscar proves that narrative matters a lot. That a strange wacky movie with heart and originality can win big. That the Academy has no problem leaving half of its Best Picture nominees empty-handed. That the BAFTA love for All Quiet on the Western Front was not a BAFTA thing; heck it won 4 Oscars! Can't wait for the next season!!

It seems it is safe to say predictions has to be based on the best narrative not best acting. When I saw who was winning throughout the night I knew Austin will not win It was all about age, comebacks and narratives. Academy’s rating will be even lower next year

Been waiting for this all morning. So agree on all your analyses, and certainly The Kimmel.. One thing that struck me was that many spontaneous and/or eloquent and/or witty acceptances repeatedly came from the non-actors -- good night for speeches. As usual, "In Memoriam" had some shocking omissions. What was with the Warner Bros centenary section including MGM films? I know they own the library, but WB didn't MAKE "Singin' in the Rain." Very odd. At least we got an appearance from one of MY favorite performers of 2022: Jenny is undoubtedly fielding agent offers even as this is being typed. As ever, it's our mantra: Youse twose are the berries. More, please, thank you.

Blanchett did set several records this awards season; she became the first actor to win 2 trifectas, the actor with the most awards ever and in achieving the latter she became the first actor to pass the 200 awards mark. . Its been a rewarding year, not only for Blanchett but also for others. One of the biggest winners, not in awards but in terms of her career, is Nina Hoss. Finally Hollywood's eyes have been open to her potential, she has a US agent and several new projects in the pipeline. I also love Field's comment about how Blanchett always knows what's going on with everyone on set and would tell him if someone was feeling a little down and needed a break. It's a testament to how seriously she takes the responsibility of being the lead actor. Also a sign she cares for fellow workers of any film spectrum She's often spoke about how the lead role isn't about having the biggest part and the most lines but about setting the tone and setting an example. And her being a true movie lover is her choice to praise fellow women and rivals, having the obvious risk to splitt her votes. Final great thing is this actress who is involved in refugee solidarity movement convinced many to wore the blue ribbon. All in all they took the risk and created a movie for the ages and its been a great, and rewarding, ride for the rare genre of Art House Cinema, so needed especially this era. Thank You Team TAR and sincere congratulations to all winners and nominnees!

As a musician, I’m having a difficult time reconciling Justin Hurwitz’ loss for the brilliant Babylon score that essentially acted as a narrator. AQOWF was a very good film technically, but this outcome will be remembered for a long time - especially given the cult following that Babylon is accumulating.

Discovered you while deep diving Matthew Goode’s amazing performance in the Offer. What a great interview that was! He’s delightful. Anyway, I’ve really enjoyed your insights since. I ended up getting 16/23 correct, falling short with 4 Elvis picks and nods for Banshees for supporting actress and original screenplay. As much as I loved EEAAO, I wanted Banshees to take something! ANYWAY - I’m still thoroughly perplexed by All Quiet’s overall popularity, especially its production design win. It came in fourth for PD in a few other polls as well. Do you have any additional insight as to what may have happened there? What did you two appreciate about the film? Thanks so much!
@chrisjrosen
@chrisjrosen Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Julia! Just speaking for me here: All Quiet was obviously incredibly popular at BAFTA and war movies do tend to do very well with that group and with the academy in general. It is also the closest thing in this year's race to a craft achievement along the lines of Dune or Mad Max: Fury Road -- especially with Top Gun and Wakanda Forever missing some key nominations that felt pretty locked. So in production design, it seems like with Babylon as a soft frontrunner, Avatar as a sequel the academy liked but didn't love, and Elvis flailing, they went with the movie they loved the most in the category.
@Juliagoolia81
@Juliagoolia81 Жыл бұрын
Thanks! That helps a lot. All Quiet certainly was a technical achievement, but with so much originality in the field this year, I found it harder to get excited about another war (or “anti-war”) film. But have I made a war film? No. 😂

Oscars said this is the best film of all year. That's disgusting. I love EEAAO but it didn't deserve 3 acting, editing, screenplay, direction, and producing. EEAAO was the most awarded movie ever even before the Oscars, as calculated by IGN. Oscars was simply a continuation of an epic winning streak. Considering the previous most awarded movie (Return Of The King) got more Oscars, the amount that EEAAO got was on the low side in comparison.

Why do people forget that A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE won three Acting Oscars: Vivien Leigh (Best Actress), Karl Malden (Best Supporting Actor) and Kim Stanley (Best Supporting Actress)? The only one who didn't win from A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE was Marlon Brando (the Best Actor went to Humphrey Bogart for THE AFRICAN QUEEN); it was Brando's first nomination (at age 26), after his debut the year before in THE MEN.

@@Bryan4Hillary In the history of the Oscar, no actor has won Best Actor before the age of 30! There are three: Brando, Richard Dreyfuss, and Adrien Brody. All were 29 when they were nominated, and before the Oscar ceremony, all turned 30. This year, Paul Mescal was the youngest nominee in the category: he turned 27 in February. But you can see how p.r. works: there were lots of comments on how Austin Butler was 31 (borderline in terms of how young he was) but no one mentioning how young Paul Mescal was. Brando's getting four nominations before the age of 30 is an Academy record.

The thing is, I've seen Elvis in movies from the 1960s. Why do I have to watch someone pretending. And Elvis is a character that has appeared in other movies, usually by impersonators. I would never give the movie much weight, just like when they do movies about the Beatles or any musician.

@@putinscat1208 This was a story to put his life in context within the times of when he lived and how influential he was and the social and cultural dynamics of that time in the United States. I was actually skeptical when I heard Austin was cast. I thought no way. Then I saw the movie I was blown away. Then I learned how much work he put in (including switching between decades on a daily basis during filming as they don’t shoot in chronological order) and actually sang which no one else has done. Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury did not sing, neither did Rene Zellweger as Judy Garland (a performance that was actually cringe and I still saw Rene not Judy) Austin was fantastic. I wish him a happy wonderful long life and career.

Jamie Lee Curtis one because she has a ton of friends in Hollywood and because of her SAG speech which was 3 days before Oscar voting started. I believe Cate Blanchett loss because of her crass cavalier attitude about award shows being trash to paraphrase. She acted too cool for school and then you had that whole business of her getting her friend nominated which was a little dodgy. The only race I wasn't sure of was actor but again Brandon has been around for 30 years and this is his restitution for more or less being blackballed having his marriage fall apart and going into a depression which probably gave him the emotion to have this role so everything happened the way it should!

I don't think Cate was trying to br crass. And she didn't get her friend nominated. She actually doesn't personally know Andrea Riseborough. And Riseborough deserved to be nominated. It was Michelle Williams, who changed to campaigning for Best Actress from a supporting role that took a slot from someone else, and in a not very good movie. Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh eon on narratives and rode the wave of Everything Everywhere All At Onxe.

I agree with the general takes people have re: the factors that contributed to Jamie Lee Curtis's "upset" win (e.g., it was a career award, she had momentum, the movie was popular, she campaigned masterfully, etc.) But there's another factor that I haven't heard mentioned that I think helped nudge her over the finish line. I think some of the voters rewarded her for being "bold." Much like Lady Gaga was lauded for stripping off her makeup and ball gown for her performance, I think some voters gave JLC "extra credit"for going frumpy. And during the course of her Oscar campaign, she made a point of mentioning that she didn't use prosthetics to enhance her midsection. She let it all hang out for the sake of the craft. I think this helped earn her some points in the estimation of some of the voters. And when juxtaposed against someone else who got to be a glammed up bad ass (in a Marvel movie, *ahem*), I think that was helpful to JLC's cause.

I'm baffled why so many people put weight on the Baftas? It's a completely different voting body than the Sags which is the same voting body only the actors. The Sags are a better indicator of what will happen and it was a 100% precursor. Sometimes there are snafuis like when Sandra Bullock won for the Blind side and Meryl Streep won the sag for Doubt just to give an example.

It's disappointing to hear your lackadaisical and dismissive assessment of the most enjoyable and perhaps consequential Oscar season in recent memory. Topped by a surprisingly watchable and heartfelt show on awards night, the Oscars left the audience feeling engaged, entertained and optimistic - for a change. Is it fatigue? A creeping cynicism on both your parts? As much as I've enjoyed your deep statistical knowledge and insider industry insight it's probably a good thing that awards season is now over and we can all push the reset button.
