Jamie Lee Curtis winning makes supporting actress pretty interesting. It’s very rare to have a genuine 3 horse race in an acting category.

I think Austin will take the Oscar. He still has a chance, just as strong as Brendans. The Academy does tend to favor Actors that go under the most transformations, and Austin had so much more to do in his role.

What I've noticed also is that all four acting winners are universally beloved by the industry AND the public. Not that Blanchett isn't beloved but Yeoh has a fanbase going back decades. Who doesn't love Short Round of course? Brendan Fraser is supposedly one of the nicest guys in Hollywood. And Jamie Lee Curtis (shocked she won) is just so damn cool and also a veteran in the industry.

I am enjoying the chaos. I like that a lot of different actors /actresses have taken home hardware this awards season. I hate when it's only one person from each acting category winning everything. I absolutely loved Austin's performance in Elvis. Brendan was excellent too. I love them both winning awards. The same with Cate and Michelle. Best Supporting Actress category is total chaos and I am here for it. It will be fun being surprised on Oscar night. Although it's not really surprise that is a 2-3 person race. So any of them are deserving. Let the fun begin!

I agree, the only thing is, if a performer is really outstanding - as Cate Blanchett is - they should win rhe Oscar! Even if they win everything prior to it. They shouldn't be denied the biggest prize of all at the end of the season just because people are "bored" with them winning. That's why Crash won Best Picture years ago instead of the much better film, Brokeback Mountain. I think this speaks to there are just too many precursor awards now. Seems like every entity has to validate themselves and their worth by giving out awards. It delutes the whole process.

I'm not at all surprised by these wins. I am surprised by the reactions from some. Some youtubers, critics and commentators pushed the narrative that Blanchett was sweeping everything after the CCA, and the same with Butler after BAFTA. Chris himself did this. There's factors in every award win and nominations, but the way people ride the wave is wild. No one was heir apparent, and this seems to happen every year for the past couple and still people act shocked when someone doesn't sweep. The Yeoh commentary in particular is very telling, but sadly not surprising at this point. Ke Huy Quan has the best chance still, but I never counted Yeoh out, and I'm proud to say that.

@BISH9484 Жыл бұрын
@@johnking5433 Jamie Lee winning is a narrative driven win. If Stephanie had won, then it would probably mean something because I think she's more stronger than the 2. This also proves that Angela isn't really a strong frontrunner, if she even was at all? And I keep saying that Oscar voters don't really go for Marvel roles. Besides she's the first ever Marvel role to be nominated, I seriously don't think that they'll also let her be the first to win as well. But after all this, she could still come out winning. As for Condon, BAFTA voters overlaps more with the Oscars than the SAG. Critics Choice don't even come into play. So yeah, with Bassett missing out, I think for me, the frontrunner right now would be Condon.

So happy to see Joyce's wish coming true. This year's Oscar's just became more competitive than most people expected. It is great to have 3 acting categories that are not locked down and we have a great chance for surprises not just a carbon copy. It has been a good while since we have had a year with this many categories that could go several different ways.

I just don't see any world in which Brendan Fraser doesn't win the Best Actor Oscar. I still believe his performance was the weakest between "the top three" (Fraser, Butler, Farrell), but his narrative is too strong. Critics and fellow actors have been applauding his "comeback" since The Whale came out. Why take his story this far and give him the SAG just to give the Oscar to someone else? I suppose it's good drama to say "anyone can win" but if you have an operating brain and see the pattern and the narrative and the goodwill radiating for Fraser out of every corner of Hollywood, I don't see how you could bet on anyone else. The lack of a BP nom means nothing here.

Sean Penn like Fraser had CC + Sag before he take an Oscar. But Penn had 8 Oscar nomination + Lock - win in "Best Original Screenplay". Fraser didn't won "Makeup&Hair" in Critic's Choice, Bafta and AACTA, they all go to "Elvis". And even Jeff Bridges had absolutely lock in "Best original song". Here i see a problem cause I can't immagine that "Elvis" go home empty handed, if Academy gave it to Fraser.

As someone with Chinese heritage and grew up in the 90s watching Michelle Yeoh HK films, I went to see EEAAO at the cinemas last May to support the Asian cast, particularly Michelle. I walked out of it thinking WTF did I just watch (not in a good way)? Yeah, seems like I was one of the few who didn't like it. The hot dog fingers and butt plug/dildo fight scene were more suited to films like Bad Santa or Jackass, so it felt out of place and the writers tried too hard. Cate Blanchett had an objectively superior performance in TAR (TAR was not my cup of tea either) and she is most deserving of the Best Actress accolades. I only wish awards were based on best performance rather than best narrative. Michelle's was good, even very good, but Cate's was heads and shoulders above. The many subtle nuances in the character of Lydia Tar required acting skills of the highest calibre. Michelle's role substantially deviated from her usual fare but her character/performance lacked any subtlety. Perhaps that was the nature of the film - loud and in your face. Not really Oscar-worthy in my book, not that my opinion counts for anything...
@nirachien2274

I agree with you. I think it works against Cate that she already has 2 Oscars, and perhaps her peers are not ready to award her a 3rd. I wonder how many of these actors are jealous of certain stars and don’t want to see them win. There were a lot of populist winners tonight. I think a lot of them were rewarded for “paying their dues”. I don’t know how much this will spread to the Oscars, but I think BAFTA was rewarding more based on performance, rather than a positive narrative.

Don't forget the Regina King did not get a SAG nomination and non- Oscar nominee Emily Blunt won, so Oscar is always on it's on path. I still think that Angela has a shot, but I wouldn't be surprised if Kerry is this year's Mark Rylance (who didn't win the SAG either). But I'm glad no one is completely sweeping this year and that other awards are recognizing all the other work. I love that this year that there more unpredicatable categories.

i can see EEAAO winning up to 8 oscars: picture, director, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, original screenplay, editing, and either costumes or score (but not both). i know sweeps don't happen anymore, but sag has also never awarded a film four awards, let alone a film that's also sweeping every other guild. this feels like a rarity in the making.

SAGs was trying to show their love and support for the film they loved and do the big push going to Oscars final night. Michelle is the center of the beloved film, with those narratives and all, it's the most cheerful win of the night. But I still predict Cate will have the 3rd win, her performance is so monumental and arguably her best to date. TAR is like Banshee, the film is well loved, that's the reason behind the 2 tech noms, it has to get something and I think this is it. IMO, JLC will win supporting actress.

@Derek Dirk (#FirstLady) Their job is to get people to click, like, and subscribe, same as everyone else on social media. But they don't have any more information than the rest of us. We can all prognosticate endlessly. But the truth is that academy voters don't put nearly this much thought or energy into their individual choices. No matter how much we want to believe they do. Most years it's dreadfully obvious who's going to win on Oscar night, because it's usually the same winners that swept all the precursor awards. But this year it's more divisive and competitive, and so it's time to separate the experts from the enthusiasts. I'm sure they're up for the challenge, and I'll certainly be tuning in to their final predictions vlog. Hoping it provides more enlightened predictions than Ke Huy Quan's, though.

It's not about race. It's about sentiment. Yeoh is well-respected and well-liked actress in Hollywood for a successful long career and they wanna reward her for it. There have been many many instances over the years when the best most memorable performance didn't win the Oscar, but the Academy instead awarded it to the sentimental favorite ala Paul Newman, The Color of Money or Jessica Tandy, Driving Miss Daisy.

@@mrjinkorea It really annoys me when you have a performance like Blanchett that is truly transformational , next level, DDD from There Will be Blood- esque and they talk about rewarding someone who has barely made a dent in Hollywood. I mean Yeoh was acting in Asia for 3 decades plus and even back in Asia she had barely picked up any prestigious acting awards. Her acting skills are just not that great. So to pass up someone whose acting is to be discussed in acting schools for years to come for a sentimental crowd favorite starring in a geek hyped sci fi genre that frankly as an Asian I don't get is definitely vexing to me.
