Explained: The $800m of weapons the US is sending Ukraine

The US Government is sending a further $800 million in military assistance to Ukraine to help in the fight against Russia.
For the first time, the shipments will include heavy artillery and Soviet-era helicopters.

@@akgamingzz Actually the US is losing money in Ukraine for a good cause. They are sending these weapons packages and humanitarian aid for free. The US does send free humanitarian aid to many countries more so than any other nation. Selling Weapons makes up a very small percentage of the nearly $3 Trillion worth of yearly US exports to the world. The biggest benefit of the US military complex is to provide millions of high skill jobs in the USA

Political view that will many will support the war equals more cash for development of such weapons. The US defense budget is nearly $800 Billion per year and America isn’t even in a war and has not been since the defeat of ISIS. A few Billion dollars worth of Equipment going to Ukraine is a drop in the bucket for America. US defense companies would get Trillion dollar contracts with or without the Iraq and Afghanistan wars because Congress can always be convinced to give the US a massive budget. This is because American doctrine is that the US military especially the Navy should be more powerful than the next two most powerful countries combined. Im not saying the war in Afghanistan and Iraq didn’t help get more funding to defense companies but they would have gotten it either way. No matter what the US is going to spend nearly 20% of their national budget on Defense which is about 3% of GDP. So no matter what the defense companies are always getting a ton of taxpayer money.

The NLAWS, Javelins, Stingers, Star Streak, Switchblades, Bayraktar drones etc. That's quite an array of modern weapons and you see the effects they've had on a numerically superior force. Ukraine has actually DEFEATED the Russians in certain battles. I just hope we keep the flow of weapons pouring in. If I were the US president I'd tell Zelensky "Here's what I want you to do. Fax or email me a list of whatever you want, and it'll be on a plane NLT noon tomorrow. If we can't get it all on 1 plane, we'll use 2 planes, or 10 planes. Whatever it takes. And, once you've thoroughly kicked Russia's ass out of Ukraine, welcome to NATO."

Germany sent 1,000 anti-tank missiles, and 500 stinger missiles. They also sent helmets and humanitarian supplies which any army needs. They could do more, sure, but they've done more than some others. The UK has also sent a lot of military aid, 2nd to USA. France is being quiet on what it has sent so as not to provoke Russia.

Looking at how poorly Russia's military is faring so far (and we have Russia's corrupt oligarchs to thank in large part), it also brings into question the so-called superiority of their nuclear forces. Considering that the US spends about $60 BILLION$ annually just on keeping their nukes serviced and maintained, compared to Russia's TOTAL military budget of just $64 billion, even when accounting for the cost differential between the two nations military industrial complexes, it is hard to imagine that the Russians are actually capable of keeping most of them functioning. Yes, of course even if only half of them worked it would still be enough to destroy the world, BUT I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the number is even less than that, possibly less than 1/3. If that were true, the West would have quite a large advantage when you combine the total number of anti-ballistic missile defense systems of the combined NATO forces, and I wonder if Putin actually knows this as well. I think that the fact he was so quick to threaten the use of nuclear weapons shows not only that he actually does understand the reality, but also how secretly afraid he is, thus proving that, "The dogs with the loudest bark are the ones that are most afraid."

It would be great if your correct, but unfortunately your not. 1. The US spends 5 billion yearly on maintenance, not 60. 2. Russia military budget is 64 billion, correct. But Russian equipment is also far cheaper than their western conterparts. You can buy and field 6 T-72's for the price of Leopard 2A7. This is what allows them to field so many tanks, ect. 3. The best ABM's are from Russia, then Israel, and US on third.

Better send weapons, particularly those in storage or no longer suitable for America's way of conducting modern data-centric war. It surely is better than waiting for the war to extend to Europe and we have to send American flesh and blood. These weapons will be obsolete in time anyway so let's help out the Ukrainians and learn something from their use (like we did from Israel's use of F15).
