One thing good for Indonesia is that it still has a relatively low debt level
@ilhamrj25995 ай бұрын
Thats because Indonesia had totally bad experience from austerity due to high debt to GDP ratio back in late 90s to early 2000s. Even by that time, it peaked "only" at 72.5%... it is not extraordinary figure to today's standard. But thanks to massive austerity, severe budget management discipline, and booming commodity prices, it was succesfully managed to go down to 20% to 30% in decades of 2000. Indonesia has law that limit government spending deficit. Since 1997, only one attempt of loosening the limit was approved by the legislative... and that was due to covid. And even during covid it was only hovering around 40-ish percent. I spent my highschool years during this austerity period, the news of crumbling infrastructure, weak police department and military, and incapability of public service were everyday news.. because the budget was massively cut, yet the govenrnment was so stubborn to keep fuel subsidy.😅

Except, that every nation need its own cow-milking tax generator to fund its unfortunate population. Yeah true commodity export and large industries are massively benefit miniscule of people... BUT, the working government supposed to ensure that taxation would distribute the wealth to its unfortunate population. The country will have money to finance its education, helthcare, civil service, and public infrastructure. Thats why working democracy is important here, because if government failed to do so, they would have been voted out😂. And in Indonesia case, there is no government since reform era in 1998 with low approval rating (despite corruption and stuffs)😂. All of leaving government has approval rating in 70-80-ish percent.😅. Thus it is safe to say, the people perceived that the government manage wealth distribution rather well. And also, in Indonesia... incumbent mostly always win during the election be it in local level or national level.😂

Oh yes, disputes other than religion in the Middle East often also occur at certain ethnic levels in Indonesia which you mentioned in the video which I noticed most often occurs in areas with a high level of diversity such as on the island of Java, especially in East Java, Banten and other islands in There have also been a lot of Indonesians in Sulawesi recently, as well as the surrounding areas. Get ready. Indonesia in 2045 will be like the Middle East which is dry and there will be wars, killings and so on, as well as suicide bombings using cars and the like in Indonesia. but the thesis is that many examples of young Indonesians who are around 60% of the Z generation (aged 14-21 years) and the millennial generation (aged 22-29 years) have emerged who are identified as puritan & ultraconservative, linking this to the influence of the Wahhabi Hijrah movement.

Yup ... it's not easy indeed to be a neutral (non-alignment) country, especially when rivalries betwen US + the Westerns vs China + Russia gets intensed But, there's always two sides of coin to play with, and Indonesia has to be really smart in playing its geo-politic policy. One strategic policy that Indonesia 'plays' is "push and pull" strategy - one side, the country 'pulls in' China to invest infratructures and industries in Indonesia, which automatically 'push away' the Western or USA investors, especially related to Indonesia's new policy of raw resources ... but on the other side, Indonesia also shares wider relationship with the Western and USA in security and defense industries, which also pushes China away related to sea territorial's disputes between China and Indonesia Second strategy of Indonesia is unifying the ASEAN countries (11 SeAsian countries, including Indonesia). Basically, as the largest country in ASEAN, Indonesia has 'played' its dominance by unifying ASEAN with collective agreement to keep the region stable and peace in ASEAN Summits 2022, all member countries have agreed to not let the region as a field of war, instead will focus more on economic development and politic stability. Indonesia has made very clear statement to ASEAN that Indonesia refuses any country in ASEAN to be a proxy of one of the rivals. Thus has also been understood by non-ASEAN neighbourhood countries such Australia, PNG, China, India, Japan and (both) Korea that ASEAN in general avoid any idea of war (military forces) in their region Vietnam as well has also played its "bamboo" strategy in geo-politic, which literally means "flexible" strategy ... and I think all ASEAN countries do the same way Singapore or the Philippines for example, eventhough their relations are closer to the Western and USA ... they know that they still have to keep the region safe, stable and peace - and this goes the same to Malaysia and Thailand for example who likely being closer to China by joining BRICS so far ... Indonesia always keeps its non-alignment position between the two rivals, but also has made pretty 'strong' statement for both to not creating unstability in the region ... Well, hopefully this works and will continue
@Revante.5 ай бұрын
In fact, choosing non-alignment is not only liked by Indonesia, but most other Southeast Asian brothers also like it. We like competition, not hostility. We like rivalry, not war. We may like to tease, but we don't hate each other. We just don't want to be drawn into the hostility between Washington and Beijing. Making Southeast Asia into a battleground between 2 giants, is the worst thing that we really want to avoid.

To say I'm proud of my country will be an understatement. You see, when my mom was in elementary years her family was the only one who got access to television. Back then people from the entire neighborhood will gather at somebody house just to watch tv because not all people got access to tv. Back then, owning a car was just for the elite even if it was just an economical corolla still part of the elite and many people still uses andong (horse carriage), and becak (bicycle taxi). Back then we were one of the poorest country in the entire globe. But now, 50+ years from that time we are a thriving country with excellent economy, universal healthcare, subsidized and even free education with 90+% literacy rate, a wide internet coverage and the hub for digital economy. Now things that were luxury back in the past are a normal and already essential component of the average indonesian households such as cars, tv, smartphones, etc. We even just a step behind to become a member of oecd. So yeah, regardless of anything i can say I'm damn proud of my nation and my people because we can achieve something that are unimaginable and we are poised to be even greater than we are today.

Different then other😢 country which givened independence by their colonial power, Indonesia had to fight hard to get it's independence. I am an 82 years old Indonesian woman. I know that we as a nation had to start from zero. The Dutch never prepare us to be independence. They left nothing at all for us. We had to begin by learning and made a lot of mistakes how to run as a nation. We become strong by trial and error. So it is to be understood that it takes time for us to be able to stand on our own feet. I am optimistic that in no time we will overcome our shortcomings to become a great nation.

The problem with this analysis is that it ignores the fact that the industries that the Indonesian government has focused in is mostly capital-heavy & leaves not much room for labor absorption. This can be seen by the unemployment rate being 3.5% compared to only 1.5% with Vietnam. It also doesn't help that currently the Government isn't making foreign investment with its heavy lenience right now with home-grown products, imposing tariffs on foreign goods such as from China. This doesn't make the lives of the average Indonesian any better but does fill the fat pockets of the conglomerate families here, which is what the elites really want, especially with the programs like nickel smelting. We also have a major education problem here, where even middle-school children fail to do basic math's in many parts of the archipelago.
@KVUAA5 ай бұрын
Yes it does make living standard suffer but we use tarrifs mainly to protect our industries... If we fail then lots of job would be lost and we'll have heavy reliance with China. This is what the EU and the US has done. Also developing countries out there such as Turkey, Brazil, and India.
@antosaputrakurniawan5 ай бұрын
You're also ignore the fact that most high income economy are focused on capital-heavy and tech heavy industries, which tend to have more value added compared to economy with high labor absorption. So despite it will indeed fill fat pockets of the conglomerate, it way better to invest capital this sector as well, compared to invest only to industry with high labor absorption.
@pogogod60365 ай бұрын
So you prefer us to import cheap goods from China and left small local industries to die, also keep exporting raw nickel instead of building the smelters here? Sorry but I find your argument there need much more further explanation than the video itself.
@binsarpanjaitan97775 ай бұрын
"This doesn't make the lives of the average Indonesian any better but does fill the fat pockets of the conglomerate families her" clearly you didn't know why indonesia impose up to 200% to low value chinese products. it's precisely because many indonesian workers lost their jobs due to surplus of these products (which is extremely low price, even lower than its own material if it's taken in indonesia). this led to several factories that absorbed many workers to close (such as century old Bata factory in purwakarta). those low value products didn't help the live of average indonesians, it's just of tertiary needs (cheap clothes, cheap shoes, cheap ceramics, etc), so removing it from the market to help local producers won't cause live of average indonesians to worse.
@pogogod60365 ай бұрын
@@binsarpanjaitan9777 exactly. Paying extra 10-20k for a shirt / shoes won't make much difference for the citizens, while having a job or not having a job do, for thousands of people. To talk about one of the urgent problem for our country currently is I think online gambling. It reached US$ 20 billion in 2023 & 80% of the people who did that are in low income category. Those money goes away to other countries without contributing to the local economy. I hope the government take a really serious action about this. I'd even say better legalize gambling if any other measure fails, although many people would disagree.

Honestly speaking, I don't get impressed when some poor country hits the headlines as being the fastest growing economy and such. This is because, most of this so called growth is just paper growth with little to no real improvement in an average person's average income and standard of living. Thanks to rapidly growing population, per capita income shows negligible growth. Despite reporting high gdp growth, several of these poor countries don't have any improvement in basic amenities and infrastructure, don't have any major reforms Implemented, can't stop brain drain, sees worsening social order, sees increasing corruption, sees increasing income inequality, poor social security and don't have any plans for sustaining the high growth. Average incomes of the people may increase, but the costs increase faster resulting in negligible improvement in purchasing power or savings. Increase in unexpected costs and weakening currency add further fuel to the fire. There is no improvement in the quality and variety of products and services, education, healthcare and human capital development either. A lot of these countries are destined to get stuck in the middle income trap and face resource shortages and climate change effects as well. Some of them are doomed to face some economic crisis as well. Hence, before getting overhyped about a poor country being the world's fastest growing economy, dig deeper and find out whether these underlying issues are getting solved or not. Mere GDP growth does not make a country developed. It involves solving the underlying problems mentioned above as well. These overly long term economic forcasts by corporates and economic think tanks are ridiculous as well. For an example, people who lived in the US in the 50s or the UAE in the 80s and 90s know what real growth and development is. This real development is not experienced by people who live in these so called fast growing economies.

Mehh, not true at all. The changes of living standard in Asian countries are real though. I lived through 80s, 90s, 00s to todays Indonesia. The changes are real and impact everyone. There is bunch of statistics to prove just that, access to electricity, access to education, access to healthcare... all of which are significantly better than the 90s. Per capita income of course it is rapidly rising as well. Bear in mind, the starting point of these Asian countries were so low only in hundreds of USD, now it is in thousands. There is no way, the growths and rapid changes went undetected by local peasants. Of course we dont hope it to grow so rapid thus it would be in the order of ten of thousands, because if it happends... mostly it can be due to massive inflation and severe inequalities. Manageable growth is preferred across Asia. But to say the changes were unnoticed to most population ... it is simply false statement.😅
